Points covered. 1. Rupal's Drag race is mainstream drag, and doesn't represent all drag. 2. Transphobic slurs are prevalent in and unapologetically used by Rupaul. 3. Even though both forms of fashion are hyper feminine, Lolitas don't want to be represented on a platform that is discriminatory and devoid of inclusiveness.

Tyler, you're gonna make me cry. Thank you for calling out the disgusting transphobia of RuPaul. As a nonbinary person I've struggled with my presentation and questioned whether wearing something as hyperfeminine as lolita discredits my identity; It doesn't, policing sometimes identity based on presentation is bullshit, and discluding them from spaces such as drag or lolita is inherently wrong.

Honestly, how sick would it be if Rulpaul had both drag kings and queens on his show? No? Just cis men? Okay, yeah, because women playing caricatures of men totally isn't challenging male-dominated society at all 🙄 🙄 🙄

Challenging sure, but since masculinity in western society is associated with plain, serious, conservative stuff w no flair, it won't be as spectacular. So people would probably go "see, women aren't interesting/funny"

Leave me alone, Drag Queens represent what men view femininity as at most. Things like toxic masculinity and the need to constantly prove yourself are some of many typically male characteristics that could make for some good shows. Making fun of men, even if it’s just caricatures of them, just doesn’t fly in a male dominated society that praises masculinity to the heavens and tears femininity down and constantly ridicules the fuck out of it for laughs. Which is exactly why there should be more female drag queens. Drag completely perverted the idea of what femininity is. It’s sometimes really disgusting tbh.

Quite brave for RuPaul to exclude trans people from drag when drag was literally invented by trans women (as seen in documentaries like Paris Is Burning). While I agree that RPDR doesn’t represent all drag (#NotAllDrag), I would like to thank you for talking about Ru’s transphobic statements. I’ve met too many people who claimed they supported trans people and yet they still watched the show despite the founder’s transphobic claims

As a trans man I totally agree. Drag should be for everyone. Thankfully my local scene is more in line with that but I agree that in communities like drag race it lolita fashion doesn't belong. I also love how open the lolita community is, I haven't made an op yet (is that the right one? Bad with acronyms) but I have been following the fashion and things like KZbin/instagram for years and have been planning out outfits forever. I when I started to transition I was worried I wouldn't be accepted as a man because I have a serious love for wearing beautiful dresses and frilly lace, but everyone I have talked to has been so welcoming and encouraging. Even recommending brands that have a look I am comfortable with and stuff. Honestly I am so excited to finally go to events and stuff because outside of the metal and punk scene locally people don't really take me seriously when I dress up, but it's so cool to have a whole fashion community that see fashion for everyone, not just women or men.
@GalaxiiBunnii
@GalaxiiBunnii 5 жыл бұрын
You might mean co-od :) op just stands for one piece, which is essentially a full dress, not a skirt and top separate if that makes sense? Or a jsk which stands for jumperskirt, and is is usually more open like a pinafore and allows you to wear different toos/blouses under it. An op usually doesn't allow for this as it usually already has sleeves :) I'm no expert but that's my take on it as someone who is interested in lolita but doesn't wear it (yet)
@mimmikibilly
@mimmikibilly 5 жыл бұрын
As Neon Vixen said, an OP is a dress that can be worn as it is and features sleeves. JSKs are to be worn with a blouse beneath, and what you want to put together is a "coord" or "co-ord", which is short for "coordinate".

I make a living partially as a drag queen, and I agree. I love lolita and wear it but never to perform. I feel the cartoonish nature of drag turns this beautiful style of clothing into yet another costume. I alsomagree that RuPaul, while at one time a personal hero of mine, does not get to say what constitutes drag. It was around before him, itll be around long after he's dead and gone, and his opinions would be better kept locked away in his shiny bald head.

Tyler, I love you to death, but I think there’s a lot of things missing here. One, a lot of queens do not like RuPaul. I want to get that one on the table now because of the transphobic comments. RuPaul is not a representation of drag whatsoever. So I feel like it’s a bit unfair that you use only him as a basis for this argument. Two, some queens have brought their entire career around mixing something they love, in this case would be lolita, and drag. Some queens do not identify as a woman, and some do not identify as a man. Drag is to blur the lines of gender. Queens love lolita because it helps them express their femininity, and it helps them bring out this character or a better version of themselves, and lolita is a tool to help them with that. And finally, and I say this again for a reason, RuPaul is not the face that people should be looking at, and it is unfortunate that he does have such a popular series. You forget about queens who were able to make this even a thing, not just Scaredy Kat. No one here says that Lolita is not punk rock, because a lot of queens who are the most punk rock? End up wearing Lollita in someway shape or form. A good example would be Perfidia Or Alaska, or other queens such as Angel Fazce. I don’t feel like it was fair for you to use just the RuPaul as your source. And this comes from someone who loves the drama community, and loves the j-fashion community, and have queens come in my DM hurt because of this. TLDR: There’s more of a basis as to why drag and lolita mix then some transphobic fuck. It lands on gender expression. And that’s why the two mix well. Usually I’m OK with your opinion and everyone is entitled to their opinion, including this one, but I felt like this was well undersourced and uneducated in this topic. edit: note that i did speak with tyler and the biggest miscommunication is that it wasn't fully specified it was specifically DRAG RACE and not drag queens in general, hence why she used RuPaul as an example. even so, my points still stand, since it is still something that is a huge issue, and there should of been an extremely clear indication of the show and queens in general
@Zullala

I can kind of understand why he might only want men in the show. Because then the transformation is more on the same level for everyone in the competition. A woman will already have a feminine face (most of the time) and won't have to do as much with the makeup to create that feminine face. Also if she has big boobs then she won't have to fake it with a chest piece. She has a bit of an edge on the men in the aesthetic aspect. Though it's pretty small edge in my opinion cuz there is still the costume making and performance aspect, I can still understand if they would want all the contestants to be at a similar starting place. However RP's explanation just dug himself a huge hole, Jesus!!

I'd take his stance on "only cis men" more seriously if he didn't allow for any plastic surgery at all (more seriously, but DEFINITELY not agreeing with, because the stance is still transphobic and ableist as hell.) However, the cosmetic surgery done by some of the queens he's had on the show has gone WAY beyond "a few injections." Like, we're talking massive butt implants, cheekbone implants, repeated face lifts, etc. These are all things that trans women often have in order to medically transition. If we're talking about needing to have something to tuck, then that's a whole other issue. TLDR, I see where he's coming from, but I really don't agree with his stance, especially his doubling- and tripling-down on it.

Drag is art and performance. It shouldn't matter what parts you have or how you look. All types of people perform drag, but it's Ru's show so he can designate who gets to be seen which is unfortunate because for many that's their only exposure to the community.

Thank you, Tyler! It's odd to think that drag race of all things is a boy's only club but it makes sense in the current culture. Hperfeminity outweighs hypermasculinity in popularity and intent. By intent I mean, if someone is hypermasculine, people are quick to criticize and call it toxic. However, if someone is hyperfeminie, then they are prasied for reclaiming their sexuality and then sexulized even more. This leads me to some questions: It's more socailly accptable to sexulalize the female form than the male body, does this explain why mtf drag is more popular than ftm drag? Most mtf drag that I've seen is presented sexually and lolita is essentailly the opposite, does this mean that there is an inherent incompatiblity between drag and lolita? Mtf drag presents itself as an art form but caters to the fantasy of "what women could be if they weren't scared of using their sex as power." Lolita does the opposite by removing the sexualiness of the clothing and says "f you" to the idea of using sex or their bodies in that way. Do these ways of hyperfeminity clash in how they present their "f you" to society?

Just to add, that although i agree that a majority of the drag(in Drag Race particulary) caters to the whole "glam sex-as-power fierce vixen" fantasy, there have been queens in the show that have showed that you can use other sources for the power of a look. two very good examples are ben de la créme sweeter and softer looks or sashas velours "art for drags sake" presentations. Shit even Bebe's "black as royalty" whole thing is very different that the norm for the show (that's a whole new can of worms tho) . Also i think drag race is not a very good representation of real world drag, as i think it is a very narrow sample of it, so it should really not be viewed as such. Real life drag is much more varied and inclusive of many more identities of performers, for example in my home town, the most popular drag performer is non-binary and most of their looks look like beautiful ballon-esque gowns, leaving only their face and hands visible most of the time, which much more in line with a lolita aesthetic than with drag race sex-as-power representation of womanhood edit: sorry for the wall of text as well. tl;dr drag doesn't necessarelly needs to all (sex appeal). drag race not so bueno.

@@sourgreendolly7685 that is absolutely true, maybe in some spaces it would work but not a drag race like setting. Maybe in a more directly art related community I could see it working idk

Even if it meshed aesthetically, combining it with drag would make the items part of a costume. Frag is part of the performers life but not necessarily who they are. Lolita is everyday wear and not part of a performance. It's sort of like using a lolita item in a non-lolita outfit.

Dragula works as a competition show with afab drag performers, drag kings, drag queens and contestants with different gender identitys. So I don't get how this would make Drag Race bad. But I mean, they have a hard time with accepting different aesthetics, so I can't imagine them accepting anyome that is not a cis man with a specific drag aesthetic. Quite sad

I love Wa Lolita, that design is so freakin cute. I wish that I could wear it, but I’m a bit worried that it could be seen as insensitive.

From what I have seen, people have different ideas on it, but I’ve seen it described similarly to the wearing of traditional Japanese clothes in general, if you take the time to educate yourself on them, people may be less likely to think it is insensitive.

11:01 that is very much true. But I think a part of that has to do with Lolita being about self expression first and foremost and drag being an art first and foremost. So I would bet my money on most Lolita comms always being accepting.

I think I'm failing to understand why gatekeeping is acceptable in some cases but not in all. Because if we're gonna sit around and complain why certain things are allowed in drag, but others aren't, but also be the same people that will gatekeep about why some things are allowed in lolita, or goth, or whatever subculture/fashion/whatever whatever and push everything else out... idk. I just think it's weird. Not that I have any opinion for or against the actual act of gatekeeping Everyone wants to feel included when it comes to the cool stuff. But everyone also wants to have something exclusive and just for themselves. It's nothing new ^^;

Tyler this literally made me cry because it was so right on! That show is so popular right now and all I can think about every time I see it celebrated it is exactly what you’ve been saying. My friend is a lolita and a bio queen and RuPaul is a massive jerky head of the boys club. It is only very recently that he has kind of been forced to allow trans women to participate, because he did not know they were there. Which come on, seems almost intentionally shortsighted.
@GothKatt

You forgot drag kings, which Drag Race also bars. I'm assuming what you were referring to are bio-queens or hyper-queens. Nonetheless, drag has its opposite counterparts, queens and kings. Unfortunately, kings seem to be on the short end of the stick in drag culture in general. Some gay clubs won't even allow them to perform.

I loved Scardey Kat, I love see queens inspired by Japanese fashion but this is so on point xD RuPaul is shite but Scardey was the first non gay (she's bi) contestant and I loved that so much. Dragula also has its problems but it is way more inclusive to drag performers of varying identities - I think if respectfully done drag and Lolita can work. But yeah, RuPaul is awful.
