Previously it was believed that Kil'Jaeden had used Ner'Zhul and created the Lich king with the help of his minions the dreadlords. Now it's not that this is no longer true but it seems like that the rabbit hole goes much deeper than we thought in the Shadowlands.
Looks like the Jailer has been behind the scenes for thousands of years and he also played a role in the creation of the Lich King. Attempting to free himself from the Maw the Jailer has been hard at work.
While we know that the armour and Frostmourne are related to the Jailer we still don't know how directly he affected the creation of the Lich King, but let's discuss some of the information that we do have.

I dont think that arthas was an agent of the maw maybe dovos said that because she saw frostmourne which in new lore it belongs to maw. I guess that nerzhul was a servant of jailor. Clearly arthas was the one in control who killed nerzhul not arthas we knew but that one who got corrupted by both nerzhul and jailer despite that they became one their personality infeluenced him so much that he ripped his heart out and build a castle just like torghast in maw around icc just like jailer and when we fighting him at the top of frozen throne he has a dialogue which says once i was shaman just like nerzhul.

@@gravewalker354 Yeah, I don't think Ner'zhul was truly killed by Arthas. His soul was a part of not only the helm but the entire set of armor as well as Frostmourne. He was actually bound to these items, so vanquishing him from the helm would have been like killing a part of him, but not his entire soul.

If The Lich King is a creation of the Jailer, then why did he have Sylvanas destroy the helm of domination ? If the Helm of Domination was the key to breaking through the worlds, to the shadowlands, why did he create it and not have it destroyed to begin with? This is very confusing, as someone who doesn't play and barely follows lore lol.

You bring up a good point and the only reason I can think of as to why the Jailer would destroy his own creation was because the Lich King broke free from the Jailers power like he did from being under Kil'jaedens control. What I do not get is if the Jailer made the Lich King, why would he make someone who would purposely negate souls from going to the Jailer since Arthas was stealing the souls and putting them in Frostmourne as well as raising undead. We see that being raised undead does not guarantee that you are brainless and that slowly you can regain your human/mortal traits. Having the Jailer create the Lich King would be a stupid move on the jailers part.

My guess is the Jailer wasn't strong enough back then. Frostmourne was a tool to steal a portion of souls to the Maw (see Shadowlands Afterlives: Bastion). Then the sword was broken. He made a deal with Sylvanas to wage wars for more deaths. At some point in time, the Arbiter went AFK. Souls from the wars (Legion war, Burning of Teldrassil, The Forth War a.k.a. Battle for Azeroth) are funneling directly to the Maw, powering the Jailer. Now he is strong enough (even beat the Primus, leader of Maldraxxus, God of War kind of being). Additionally, in Enemy Infiltration - Preface (an item in game), many factions were already beaten, so this is a good opportunity for the Jailer to rise.

@@silverspear21 i really have no idea, but if im about to speculate, frostmourne or the soul that frostmorune summon will send the soul to the maw after being used.. u see, not every soul was going to the maw, but being summoned by the lich king will automatically make the soul go to the maw. So yea, son of saurfang(forget the name), kelthuzad, sylvanas, etc are going to the maw.

He likely first wanted to make Arthas his host but that plan failed in WotLK due to us. And the new Host was a half being of life. So he went with plan B as destroying the helmet ripped open a gateway between the maw and azeroth.

The jailer seems to be a lot stronger than anything we've ever faced in the game. The two titans we faced didn't count. Both of them weren't even close to full power. If we end up facing him and defeating him in the final raid of the expansion, it better be a damn good explanation behind it.

If you got back to warcraft 3 with the context of the new lore, the nathrezim clearly make themselves out to be some greater threat. It was implied to be the legion,but maybe blizz had always intended there to be SOME twist, but only now are they fleshing it out. Theyre relationship with Sylvanas also foreshadows her allegiance to The Jailor a bot as well in my opinion. The quotes are subtle, but still kinda fit with the new warcraft narrative.

there's so many things wrong with this theory of yours. kil'jaeden carries the title "the deceiver" he will hardly be manipulated by some lesser demons like dread lords. kil'jaeden created the lich king using ner'zul's soul, the armor and sword might have been created by the nathrezim, but the set of armor and that sword was more of a hilt on a sword while ner'zul (later Arthas) was the blade attached to that hilt. the nathrezim, while being mysterious beings, are not greater demons, they are more like lieutenants and captains under the command of actual greater demons, like Mannoroth for example, and the fact Tichondrius was made a fool by Illidan shows as much.. this conniving sniveling trickster was shown to be one of the most incompetent idiots the second the legion gave him real power of command, as was those other three dread lords that were put in charge of the plaguelands; Detheroc, Balnazzar and Varimathras whom were beaten intellectually by a dead elf, not to mention Mal'ganis who were outwitted by, at that time, a simpleton named Arthas who literally walked into every trap laid out before him despite being warned that he was walking into a trap at least once. even Medivh told Arthas not to be an idiot, and like the idiot Arthas is, he ignored him. also i was never a fan of retcons, and there is no god damn way in hell that blizzard planned this 20 years ago when warcraft 3 was released, which makes your theory (if true) a complete retcon. aka a diverging of the original story... that's like saying "Thrall was never actually just a remarkably gifted shaman, no no no, he was actually just uhm... blessed by uhhh Ragnaros, yes, lets go with Ragnaros". they are pulling this crap out of their asses, which would explain why the new 'azerite' resource is called "Enema"

Eh, I really don't believe Sargeras was actually duped into creating the Scourge by the Jailer and his forces. I mean, this is Sargeras we're talking about; the most powerful of the Titans and a tactical genius. I'm pretty sure Sargeras KNEW the Dreadlords were bullshitting him and could see through their agenda, but he played along anyway and worked with them (and the Jailer) because Sargeras was just that damn desperate to stop the Void. I think both the Jailer and Sargeras knew and distrusted each other, but forged a temporary alliance for the purpose of "saving" the universe from the Void. It's like if roaches infested your house, and you become so desperate to stop them that you hire the seediest, slimiest, most dishonest exterminator you know of out of desperation. You KNOW this guy is full of it, and you KNOW he'll screw you over with a massive bill after it's all said and done, but you hire him anyway, because the roaches are worse.

By these logics, Arthas had no fault; since being manipulated by the most powerful entity to become is champion, I also think that there was no such thing as Nerzhul in the Frozen Throne , and might have been Jailer all along (disgused as Nerzhul) calling to Arthas in Warcraft 3 and then merging.

The Dreadlords may still be the ones that created the Lich King's armor and Frostmourne, ( or at least had a hand in it) just not for the purpose that Kil'jaeden believed. Or them telling KJ that they did but in fact they just took it from the Maw would not be out of character, they are master manipulators that deal in deception and subterfuge.

We only knew the story as IT was told to us, Dreadlords have been manipulating and scheming for far bigger scale then we knew, now it seems they even manipulated Sargeras and the Legion, giving them the Ultimate Bad (Void Lords) and directing their war campaign. We know the leader of revendreth struck a deal with the jailer. We know the leader of revendreth was once a dreadlord himself, and likely oversees the initiation and orders given to dreadlords. It stands to reason then that the part of the bargain between revendreth and the jailer would be to have the dreadlords facilitate the removal of the helm of domination and frostmourne to be used on Azeroth to eventually break the veil between the two places.

KilJaden made Ner zhul the lich king. "Created" is being like Kil jaden controlled ner zhul, false. Ner zhul was free, so free he could trick arthas as his own agent to break free and betray Kil jaden by doing so. Who created the armor, power etc is legends and it was said the nathrezim did or know the ones who forged it, they used it and its powers for their spiel to cause destruction and death. The jailer receives his powers through mortals dying and taking their souls? Why would he create something that would negate him receiving more power? The Dreadlords are masters of spreading Chaos. By creating the Lich King he was the embodiment of Chaos. He defied his master (Kil"jaeden), he defies what the Jailer stands for (stealing souls from him and trapping them in Frostmourne). I believe the Jailer is going to end up being the world soul that Sargeras killed when he thought it was IBAR (Infected Beyond Any Repair). The Jailer was so angry with the Titans for this and became death itself being born from death. The Titans being all about order the Jailer set out to spread disorder behind the shadows. He found the perfect allies in the Dread lords since they also love to spread chaos and disorder.

I always saw Sargeras as the big baddie like Thanos or Galactus is to Marvel. But the Jailor and the Maw storyline is throwing me off a bit. I love it how WoW is evolving and just recycling old character stories.

@@ashoush85 It's more complicated than that..... Arthas as a Lich King never worked for the Maw.. And not KJ either.. So no, they are not pawns... Nor their actions helped the Maw in any way.. Might have helped the Shadowlands since more dead=more powerful Shalowlands but the Jailor did not receive any boost from that..

He didn't have any will at all, and Nerzul was KJ pawn untill he decided to break free , that's what KJ himself stated Clearly both guys (Nerzul and Arthas) started to retain their freedom when they united with the LK. Now we know the LK is a completely separate entity that makes you some sort of a jailer agent / enforcer

So, basically the Legion, one of the greatest enemies in Warcraft III are a bunch of pussies, which kinda makes Warcraft III useless. Well done Activision for pissing again on the old games of Blizzard(!) I mean, the Maw using the dreadlords as agents is a direct retcon since they were really oblivious of Kel'Thuzad machinations in Warcraft III.

There wasn't even a mention of anyone else, yet now these things, like frostmourne, which was explicitly mentioned as made by the Legion, was instead created by the Jailer? Retcon. 藍海 The old writers who made the story of the lich king never intended it to wrok this way. Retcons are everywhere. The runecarver forging the domination gear instead of Kil’Jaeden and the dreadlords, the lich king beign used by the jailer to grow his influence... None of these things were known before they have just altered our perpectivecon how we view these events. From now on you will always view the story of the lich king differently.

@@shadowgamer4306 Eh, I'm kinda getting out of wow, was a bigger fan of Warcraft anyway. I'll probably keep up with the story overall, but I'm pretty finished otherwise. Don't have much of an interest if they are just going to keep retconning just to keep their cash cow alive. I liked the original story of the lich king, heck I wouldn't have done wotlk when they did, so you could still fight Arthas now, after the other two original biggest threats, the Legion and the Old Gods, were dealt with.

I have a really random thought. You know how the warcraft live action movie i believe wasn't loved. I wonder if making a world of Warcraft anime would work. The Lore died after "wrath of the lich king" it would have been best if they stoped the wow in the 2008 and start working on a single-player RPGs like Skyrim in different timelines and different lands. With canonized lore until 2008.
