Patenting the game as a tool for Georgist propaganda is a bit ironic, as Henry George considered patents to be invalid. He supported trademarks and copyrights on specific ways of expressing ideas, but considered the basic principles behind intentions to be always part of the public domain on which the state had no right to infringe.

@nicksterwixter7 жыл бұрын
Exactly--if you play strictly by the official rules, it turns into a 1 to 2 hour game instead of a game that last literally forever. And it usually stays exciting the whole way through.

You almost had a really good pun there.
@ThePredator327 жыл бұрын
Another tip to drastically speedup your game of monopoly, don't wait until most of the properties are bought to start making trades. if you and someone else each have 1 of 3 for a monopoly and the third property is unbought immediately trade so you each have 2 of 3. A set where 3 players all of 1 property each is essentially dead. Early trades make favorable deals more likely later on and gives people monopolies sooner thus speeding the game up.

When someone on the Left rails against "Capitalism", they are complaining about "Corporatism". (Or "Crony-Capitalism") When someone on the right praises "Capitalism", they are talking about "Free Market Capitalism". One of the biggest blunders in all of human history is that both (opposite) ideologies are referred to by the same name by most people. Corporatism is horrible. Free Markets led to the greatest prosperity the human race has ever known.
@tohopes7 жыл бұрын
They're referred to incorrectly because many people are hysterical and love having a scapegoat.
@mncdssctn91107 жыл бұрын
theQiwiMan True.
@Quagthistle7 жыл бұрын
Free Market Capitalism lends itself toward Corporatism because "rational economic actors" (who supposedly set the prices in a free market) are easily manipuated by Corporations, engines designed to exploit those "free" actors. The same will happen in any "free market", just as it does in Monopoly, reguardless of what term you use for the "Corporations".Once a player rises to the top, they will turn their money to manipulating the efforts of others to further enrich themselves, gobbling up other "free market" businesses and wrestling control of the system from the ordinary people. Governments can buy time for the failing system by putting in place a complex system of regulations, but those governments then become a target of the same corruption that turned the "free" market into a farse. Once corrupted, the government officials secretly bend the regulations, and those at the top are "free" to exploit the markets for their own desires. The only way to prevent this process is an external actor (like a government) controlling/regulating it, but this in turn makes the markets no longer "free" and the government soon becomes corrupted. Taking away the regulations only accelerates the breakdown of an already broken system the regulations were supposedly designed to fix. I've never seen ANY example of Capitalism that didn't end up twisted into the horrible beast that is Corporatism without government regulations acting as a failsafe. In short, "Free Market Capitalism" is a short-term state, not unlike the start of a Monolpoly game. Once a player builds enough "success", usually at the expense of the other players, the roll toward Corporatism is cemented, nigh inexorably. A "Free Market" can never exist for long...
@SkipTerrio7 жыл бұрын
theQiwiMan Well said.
@schumanhuman7 жыл бұрын
There is always a danger of vested interests and monopoly corrupting the process, but there is always varying degrees of freedom, there is no 'absolute' free market and never was. It's not about regulation. If something is especially egregious it should be banned, if it cannot be banned then it's bad effects should be taxed - as with the land monopoly, and then and only then does regulation play a subsidiary role. People forget that capitalism was a revolt against the feudal landlords, but land is even more than in Magie and Henry George's day a massive factor, and the banks and financial institutions are very much capturing the same 'rent' as under fuedalism, however outwardly different the economy may appear. When more people understand the difference between an earned income and a passively acquired one, aka 'economic rent' we can perhaps move to a better system of actual laissez faire markets. Evidence already shows, when the right policies are enacted in capturing rents rather than taxing productivity, it works just as the theory says it should and does so as far and for as long as it is enacted. There is no utopia, but we can only improve the situation substantially by addressing the monopolies of land and money creation.
