Great chat gentlemen. I never test drive a car till I’ve decided to buy it so totally agree. 😊

I love these chats - I think the business is a tough one and it helps to share the experiences. It’s cathartic. I’m in a real niche where I convert vans to campers and so far so good but it takes me 3 months to buy, convert and sell a vehicle so I always need to find the b@lls to invest in the next one!

Respect and enjoy the great content, and i do appreciate where you are coming from after 42 years of car trading on and off. (Retired now thank god). But can we have a vote on the Victor Meldrew 2.0 award of 2024 between your self Joe and Chops?😀

the number of owners can be a sticking point and people seem to think a car that is traded on regularly has to be a problem car. but the sportier more expensive cars can be traded out more as people scratch the itch and then want move on.

How is he doing bodywork it there's only him and his partner.The first thing i want to do is drive a car to convince me this is the car for me,i wouldnt do the deal first when you go into a main dealer every customer wants to have a Demo road test in it first.and that's me working in the motor industry since 1978.

When you try and do part exchange in California every dealer runs a basic diagnostics check that the five required engine monitors are ready. If they are not that’s a 100% indicator they used a basic scan tool to turn off the engine light and a there’s a permanent fault in the ecu.

I agree with the deposit ethos, no point, I get my cars ready to go, I'll not really save it, when it's first advertised it's red hot, a week later it's dead. As this guy says deposits just cause trouble.
@hughesy6062 ай бұрын
I do the same. First person to put money in my hand takes the car. It's surprisingly effective on getting real buyers focus.
@roystonvehicles91292 ай бұрын
@hughesy606 yes bud, way Internet sales are people loose interest very quickly, especially after a few days, if you refund the deposit it's all a waste of time anyway. I make sure my cars are totally ready to go then it's first with the money, I've saved stuff, people have seemed great, then it's like a different persons actually arrived.

Should be a low oil message on the audi, low oil pressure, stop engine is another thing, warning comes on at around 7 psi, so engines goosed. Audi convertable, cat N, no oil pressure, coming to a Facebook advert near you, 600 quid, ono, buyer to remove.

I always assume iam an average buyer, I like to do the following. Go and have a look around and sit in a car that's clean and tidy at a weekend. Be shown any service history, 2 sets of keys and front floor mats. Be offered a test drive , Be offered any additional services (but be asked not lectured). Pay for the car, or deposit (dealers choice) there and then with the proviso that it has a fresh mot, a service (oil, air filter, cabin filter, anti freeze level. Be able to collect the car the following weekend (to give me a week to sort out insurance and odds and sods) My buying budget is between £12'000 to £18'000. Is what I want reasonable guys?

See until I watched more of these videos I thought it was standard to turn up and buy it and expect to drive it home that day. I’ve seen brought and drove home all my cars from different places. CLA from rs car sales, Golf GTI from local dealer who had a mobility shop for old people scooters etc who also sold cars, Seat Leon from local main dealership similar price range, my girlfriends cheap Antara when her car broke and was pregnant so needed something asap. I’d find it odd if I turned up to buy and couldn’t drive it away but does seem to be not that unusual. I’d also as a dealer want my customers to drive home in the car I wonder how many get buyers remorse over the week and cancel the purchase. I tend to do the insurance on my phone in the car park before I leave takes all of 15 minutes if they don’t offer drive away insurance.
@kanytonaan55942 ай бұрын
@@zowahh that sounds pretty standard to me, these modern methods where you buy and they fix it for you afterwards is what we'd consider "cowboy sales tactics" not so long ago.

He means figures agreed etc. not actually sold, so not wasting his time taking it for a test drive then haggling over money after.
@davidclarke97672 ай бұрын
You have to laugh in the past when people advertised a car in the paper you sometimes notice someone has about 3 cars for sale, same phone number so when you rang them they would say it's not my car it's my dad's he's had to stop motoring, so I would say has your dad stopped driving the other cars. They sometimes pretended not to know what you were on about. The other thing with private sales is when the vender starts telling you what faults the car have but don't worry they won't cost much to be repaired. If that's the case why didn't they do it, it would mean they didn't need to list them to a prospective buyer.
@roystonvehicles91292 ай бұрын
Old boy, stopped driving, a trader I know says that about all his cars, it's very popular in the motor trade.

Could he sell the bodywork business and start again? 🤔 Would give a defined end to the body work jobs & he’s only recently started selling cars so no trouble to move the business, he also said the site is an odd layout for a showroom anyway so sell up and find a new purpose made site? 🤷🏼♂️

If oil pressure warnings come on that cars toast now. I sold a nb Mx5 the other week, no oil pressure light,they have a gauge, that customer obviously not looked at, those engines are unburstable (?) it's run out of oil, basically had it now, I've had to send him money for another engine.

App on your phone, run a basic check, mot history, log book change date, takes 2 mins, before you hand over money pay 7.99 for a full check, finance and a all important salvage check, I did salvage in the 90s full time, so know all about it, no excuse tbh.

Oh no. This would be a total turn off. No test drive until sale agreed? This guest dealer wants his cake and to eat it too, and seems to know it all already. If I turned up and got this attitude, it would be a hard pass from me.
@thegreat_cornholio2 ай бұрын
Totally agree. Not everybody knows exactly what car they want when on the market to buy one. I went to a dealer several months ago and they had three cars I was potentially interested in. Had they not let me test drove them, then they wouldn't have got the sale. Such a narrow minded attitude not to let the prospective customer test drive before parting with thousands.

Run it thru autotrader as an advert, it'll come up s, n, c or d, then pay 7.99 for a check with pictures, it usually opens your eyes (!)

@RealTorquePodcast can't even trust auctions bud, until Aston barclay started doing a (we pay) salvage check you ended up with unrecorded cat c, s, happend to me a couple of mths ago, hpi clear, but not salvage clear, 4 grand and a cat s mii, auctions all "oh we don't do that check" customer who I sold to did tho (!) trouble is you can't walk around the auction hpi, ing every car that catches your eye.
@1maico12 ай бұрын
You can on the Autotrader sell your car page and other similar sites. A basic free 5-point HPI check with cat listing, mileage adjusted value, but without damage photos.You need to pay for a premium check for that, which is advisable for more expensive cars.
@roystonvehicles91292 ай бұрын
To answer the thumb nail, end buying trader is at fault, run every check you can prior to handing 2k over, it's just business, nothing personal, especially if you can see a poor previous repair. Unfortunately James blinded himself after seeing autotrader retail valuation and the excitement of smoking (quite literally) in a soft top audi, as the cars basically run out of oil, it's now scrap, harsh on the painter, who I expect is no longer your painter mate. That audi is a classic example of not checking, ignoring red flags and not been aware of that models faults. Rev a car up, run to the back and smell the burning oil,easy check, oil mist hangs in the air.

Who knew that replacing a v8 or v6 with a tiny 1.4 means at 50k the engine needs replacing. They aren't hugely more economical because you have to rag them and the engines need work or to be replaced so the old engine is now a waste product out in the world instead of in the car. Incidentally there is a model S is the UK with 430k on with same batteries and motors. Look at diesel gate another eco fiasco.
