Steve Dangle and Chris Johnston play a game of Staying or Going where they discuss every Toronto Maple Leafs player and whether or not CJ thinks that player will still be on the roster next season. Is this the last we've seen of both Marner and Tavares? Will Domi and/or Bertuzzi be back?

CJ saying nobody is going to have a problem with JT's contract or where he's at from a game play perspective? That's a wild statement. He's a 65 point, 11 million player who's in decline. Literally every team in the league will have a problem with that including the Leafs which is why we're discussing this in the first place.

Both Mitch and tavares only count against the cap for that much. They will only be owed under a million. It's a sweet deal if you want the player, have the extra cap space because you've got a younger roster and are expecting the extra room for the following season. But cap won't be the reason they don't get traded. The leafs will have paid them 90% out by the time a trade happens. It comes down to whether Berube thinks he can put get him playing with heart. Remember this is a guy that had none of these assets and a dead last at christmas team. Yet has a cup with them. He's gonna come in and give the benefit of the doubt that it's a coaching failure. Then he's going to evaluate based on whether he can make bubble boy Mitch our every game Mitch. That one drove the net and forced goals because he decided he wanted them. Tavares is older but Marner has shown he has that killer instinct. But it's only been in rare circumstances. Berube will try to get us that Mitch. If not he's gone before the trade deadline.

I wish it would be that defensive pylon Rielly. 11yrs in the league and he hasn't developed a slapshot or one-timer. He can't clear the front of the net, doesn't hit, doesn't standup at the blueline, can't PK, low d-zone IQ and is below average at winning puck battles. Since his 20 goal fluke season he has averaged under 8 goals a year. What he does well is pass the puck to star forwards and pickup lots of assists. You could get a d-man at 4.5M to do the same thing.

Honestly, trading Tavares because of the 11M is short sighted. I'm not saying you don't trade Tavares, but it shouldn't be because of 11M. It's one year. Ask yourself whether you want Tavares on his next contract. If you don't think he fits into Toronto's long term plans, that's fair. But if it's just the 11M, it's short sighted. I don't get the Marner hate - they would have beaten Boston if the powerplay had been even average. They were missing Matthews and Nylander for several games each, and goaltending was inconsistent/injured versus the guy who was arguably the best in the league at the other end. Tavares is the main issue as he has become overpriced for what he brings - perhaps they could renegotiate his final year , and stretch it into a 3-4 year extension at a lesser amount.

I think it's that he hasn't provided the full value of his contract in the eyes of fans. At the outset of his current deal, he was one of the highest paid players in the league by far. He's 7th in scoring over the term of his deal and it's fair to think that's not quite enough. He's less than a point a game in the playoffs. If you think of yourself as one of the best of the best, you need to do better in the eyes of many fans. I don't think JT or Marner are necessarily gone, even for 2025-26, but Treliving is going to definitely play hardball with both. To whit: Marner, you get 9M. You've made 60M+ over the last 6 years, you'll never want for anything financially for the rest of your life, but we'll still give you around market value (there's no doubt 9M-10M is market value for someone who skirts around 30 goals and 100 points a year as a winger). You want to play it here, you constantly tell us there's nowhere else you care to play. Then take the hit for the team. Marner's only leverage against that, IMO, is the problem if the Leafs lose him for nothing, like they have for so many players over the last half-decade plus. Tavares, if you want to stay, you need to take half. 5.5M for 3 years or less. All the same clauses, but that's it, take it or leave it. You wanted to be here, you still want to be here, that's what you'll take. Otherwise, go play somewhere else, we can do better with two players at 5.5M than him at more. Between age, slowing production and lack of playoff production, he's got no leverage against that. If neither takes, you invest that money in better depth players, especially on the blueline, and try and find a better cohesion around Matthews. IMO, the biggest mistake was signing Nylander when they did. Not only did they sign him at his absolute peak value, but everything at this point for the Leafs is about the playoffs, and there's no doubt he doesn't have the leverage today to demand 11.5M anymore after that playoff performance. If he's still unsigned today, he's probably the guy that's going, and they might be throwing the 11.5 at Marner. And as good as Nylander's season was, Marner has the better body of work and therefore should be able to demand more.

@@owenritzie1779 Perhaps it's what you mean at the end, but Panarin's contract was in a completely different atmosphere where 75% of the league didn't have under 2M in cap space. That said, maybe the offer is fine if it's 10M. He's probably a good bit better than Barzal (9.15M) but he's not as good as Pettersson (11.6M). Probably somewhere smack in the middle there works. He needs to give a hometown discount, though. We can't be spending more than $35M on 3 players anymore. I think Tavarez stays. Yeah, 11 million and all that, but think beyond the money for a second. He's in the last year of his contract, and it's already established that he already took a cut so that he could play with Toronto. He's also in the latter half of his career now, his value is going down, that's just a fact. But he DOES still provide good value on the 2nd or even 3rd line. Tavarez can be extended at a team-friendly deal that reflects his current value, and open up more room for the Leafs while keeping a talent in place. That's why Marner makes the most sense to move. His contract is in the same spot, but unlike Tavarez, Marner isn't gonna be looking for a team-friendly pay cut. No, youll never get an equal value out of trading Marner, but that extra 10+ million in cap space alongside any players or draft picks (which the Leafs desperately need)? That's not nothing.

I really wish people would stop acting like Marner is the problem. We DO this in Toronto... pick a whipping boy and download all our frustrations on him. Sundin. Kristich. Reimer. Larry Murphy. I mean... Marner's the problem? Really? Regular season: PPG at a 100 point/season pace. Routinely adds 30 goals/season. Defensively responsible (Selke finalist), offensively elite (record setter). Plays power play (it died when he got injured) AND the penalty kill (like that isn't a waste of his talent), and performs whatever role is asked of him. When someone's in a slump, 'play them with Marne', and that'll get them going' (makes players around him better, and that includes Austin and JT). He even hits! No, he doesn't annihilate people (he's simply not big enough), but it you watch how many times he hits intelligently to recover the puck, you wouldn't be calling him soft. Oh yeah... and he's an elite puck retriever. 'But he doesn't achieve in the playoffs!' Are you kidding me? He's the 12th highest Leaf producer ALL TIME in the playoffs! Ahead of both Austin and Willie! And he's usually tapped to shut down the other team's offensive best AND play the penalty kill. People THEN wonder why he's not scoring as often. Imagine it it was HIM coming in on the line that followed up a successful penalty kill, instead of Austin, Willie or JT. Think his production might have been higher? We'll never know. Part of his problem is that he wears his heart on his sleeve, and that's how he gets vilified. He clearly wasn't happy this year, and he committed the cardinal sin of letting his unhappiness show across his face. In other words, he CARED! Because of it, all he's remembered for is the defeated looks of despair when things went bad. He never gave up, but he still got the rap for it, blamed because he didn't catch a streaking Pasternak - in full flight - the second he stepped on the ice. He's earning too much! That must be HIS fault. Why didn't he do MORE? Do BETTER? Solve all our problems? Forget that he was coming back from an injury, where he lost his spot to Max Domi. Yeah, because Max Domi is a better player, right? Nothing against Max, but he can't do HALF the things Marner can. And even then, Marner accepted the demotion because (as Steve described it) it spread out the offensive wealth. Hmm. What was the definition of team player again? And now? We can't get him out of town fast enough. We're posting stupid trades that are geared to just clearing his cap, as if that money could be better spent on a superior player. Because, you know, once we have cap space, we'll just GET a better player than Marner. Like...? Yeah, because superstars (let alone superstar defencemen) just grow on trees. If Marner were playing for any other team, people would be salivating to get him. He's a special player, the perfect offensive player that doesn't sacrifice defence, and a rare talent that rivals Mathews in sheer value. But hey... let's trade him away. Then we can know the joy of watching him play for a team that utilizes him properly, and watch him score an insane number of points against us (so Steve can tear what's left of his hair out.) Seriously... we'll deserve what he get when he's gone... AND what we get instead.

The core needs to remain. The Leafs have traditionally blown up their team and its gotten them nowhere since 1967. Other teams lose and keep their team intact and a number eventually win. Some don't. So many ex-Leafs who were railroaded outta town by Leafs fans and arm chair GM's have gone on to win cups elsewhere. Marner will be added to that list if he is traded. Marner has value. After his contract ends he needs to be resigned at 9.0. If he refuses then trade him. Tavares has value. But right now he is a 5 million player, not 11 million. I want both men on the Leafs. Win or lose I want them to remain Leafs.

Shoot pry dvorak away from where ever he is, and have two solid lines. Yes Marner and Matthews are good, but too easy to defend when paired. the third player hardly touches the puck.
