The loan scene doesn't make sense. If he was quintupling his money daily he would have had $100k in a week and wouldn't need loan shark.
@JustSomeGuyLV7 ай бұрын
kinda yes kinda no - if multiplying money by factor X is 100% guaranteed, than having increased funds right at the start makes sense if you want to achieve x amount of millions $ asap, rather than waiting 3 extra days to achieve that goal (if waiting 3 extra days seems unnecessary and even wasteful to a bright and even over-competent mind).
@repsaknivek7 ай бұрын
@@JustSomeGuyLV That's not why this scene doesn't make sense. It's the math. He said to the loan shark, "I quintupled my money four days in a row," and presented his data to prove it. But if that was true then borrowing $100,000 would have been ridiculous because he would already have made millions of dollars. Remember? He came back from the trip, and took his $800, started trading and made $2,000 the first day (so now he had a total of $2,800). He said on the second day he made $7,500 (so he then had a total of $10,300). He did not quintuple his money on either the first or second day, so the earliest he could have done it would have been on days three through six of trading. That would mean on day three, he turned the $10,300 into $51,500. Then on trading days four, five, and six, quintupling them each day would have increased his money to: $257,500, then $1,287,500, then $6,437,500. So it would be silly to ask the loan shark for $100,000. (And if he quintupled his money just three more times he would have more than $800 million.)
@scottfree64797 ай бұрын
@@JustSomeGuyLV Not really. If you can double your money every day then it would take you less than 45 days to become the richest man in world history. That's assuming you start with 1 cent. Sure, you can knock some time off with higher starting capital but there's no reason to risk shady black market money lenders to save a couple weeks.
@rcb39217 ай бұрын
That's not how market trading works. There mere act of making a trade softens the benefit of subsequent trades because you are tipping the supply and demand all on your own. So there is a limited 'capacity' in any signal to buy or sell, even if you are the only participant in that movement (and you won't be). When your initial capital is small, you really don't shift the market with your presence, and you can do crazy things like doubling your money in short order. But it doesn't take long for diminishing returns to catch up to you, and soon you just can't earn those kinds of percentages.
@longtyler487 ай бұрын
I agree behind the theory of the mathematical implications of doubling your money every day, but this is when I think NZT more as a drug whereas he was saying he had to move forward. While he could’ve easily accomplished it without excepting the loan the desire to move forward as quickly as possible pushed him to do something that was more irrational

Popping those pills allows him to live every power-fantasy felt while experiencing a manic episode, but withdrawal sends him spiraling into a state worse than his regular state. I always thought the loan shark was dumb. But he had grown so confident to the point or arrogance that he was simply certain. The only silliness was that he did not pay him off immediately. Until they came for him and he learned to never under estimate anyone again. No matter how smart you are, you are still human.

From the 1st two days quintuppling his money he would've had 800+2000+7500 or around 10k. He would've had over 100k in 2 days without needing to involve a loan shark

There are a people pushing a capitalistic morally absent world but it’s because they need money they only get it if we want it too. if you decide to again like he said once you get a lump sump or a good salary not invade Russia in the winter pop a beer and what he should’ve said at the end Start a Family

I think that was a strong possibility in the movie considering that he found his ex-girlfriend to start dating, and then talked to her about them moving in together.
