Who’s to blame for the 'broken' US immigration system? | The Bottom Line

President Joe Biden promised a “humane” immigration process on his first day in office, but not much has changed since the anti-immigrant policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Millions of people from Latin America make the journey north to cross into the United States every year, and the ones who make it get stuck for years in legal limbo, waiting for a hearing.
Steve Clemons speaks with immigration lawyer Allen Orr and reporter Uriel Garcia about how the debate among Americans on whether immigrants are welcome has stymied chances for any new laws to modernise the system.

Qatar can help. Qatar has a large fleet of commercial aircraft, just fly these "refuges" there. It is time for Qatar to accept their first refuges ever.

Middle-class Latinos can arrive here and choose to stay after their visa expires. Many experts say that the bulk of illegal immigration is this type. But middle-class people have the means to stay without repercussions. There are many Europeans and Canadians that are here illegally and stay. What is needed is to go beyond the need for slave labor. Immigration needs to be fair and not discriminatory. Another consideration is that Mexicans go to San Diego like white citizens visit Maine. The Southwest is still predominantly Mexican in every way. There should be a way for Mexicans to travel to the land they lost to The US and from their motherland.

Your cousin having to wait 15 years to get a visa is a great example of how our immigration system is broken. What is the difference between "legal" and "illegal" when the laws themselves don't make sense?

I think both legal and illegal immigration should be strictly monitored and controlled/restricted. We don’t really need 500000000 people working in the kitchens while there are bums on the couch on welfare checks. We need to get them some work to do.

Corporations and Agribusiness that depend on low wage labor must lobby Congress to act on immigration; if nothing else, increase the number of worker visas. This chaos at the border creates a perverse incentive to do nothing because undocumented workers can be paid at a much lower rate. 😣 The US, at the behest of corporate interests, has a long history of installing autocratic governments favorable to foreign investment (aka stealing of natural resources); therefore, much of the immigration could be stopped if the US took personal responsibility by dismantling the brutal behavior of governments that make living in these countries intolerable, to say nothing of global warming increasing the number of climate refugees!

Immigration has been fixed for decades, the US has a migrant worker visa program as well as a skilled worker program. The former is rarely used, costs money and time, so employers don't bother. Others must wait and apply for refugee status from outside the US. End of issue.

I agree that everyone should be given a chance to apply, the problem is 2 million people annually get caught trying to sneak into the U.S. How would you even give to million people a chance to apply? To be medically checked for diseases like measles that we no longer have immunity too? It would be a military scale operation.
@trinidadraj152
@trinidadraj152 Жыл бұрын
They wouldn't have to "sneak" if there was a reasonable system of allowing legal temporary labor without fear of deportation, and a coherent system of working toward citizenship for those who have been here a long time. The "crisis" doesn't exist if a coherent system is in place. It's mostly a matter of political will power to make substantial changes to this system, including the funding to increase staffing for government workers to address immigration or asylum claims.
@MrRyan-fd9rd
@MrRyan-fd9rd Жыл бұрын
@@trinidadraj152 thousands upon thousands of people would still “sneak” illegally into the U.S. even if the immigration system was fixed. Unless they let every single person from any nation who wants to come here, into the country and in a short time frame, but that wouldn’t be possible. The only way to keep people from illegally crossing the boarder would be to install a proper barrier (wall/fence), use surveillance technology, and adequate border personnel. But still, if the current system is broken, politicians need to do their job and fix it.
