so happy to see this. i had been looking for demos of effects pedals hooked up to keyboards, figuring this was a thing people had realized long ago was possible and fun to do. i expected to see perhaps some demos of this rather obvious + widespread practice. but i guess--it is a big secret. but so fun/spacey thank you for the very fine presentation of what i guess is in fact a groundbreaking discovery?

Classic bands with organists like Caravan with David Sinclair utilized their lead outs, or just hotwired themselves a lead out of whatever organ they had, and plugged it in to stuff like Echo Plexes, Fuzz boxes and wahs with wide apertures like Colorsound's wah pedal.

That wah wah pedal sounded amazing. This has given me a bit of a revelation

The first wah was a Vox organ volume pedal with a tone pot instead of a volume pot

Yup, if it sounds good to you, it is good. Liked partly due to musical wisdom but mostly due to featuring Crocs. I can’t afford the musical kit but I can, at least, sport a serviceable pair of Crocs.

These are the cheapest crocs! The ones that stink of hydro-carbons. Two pairs for £3. Bargain...

Wohooo ... dear Dan, this is absolutely inspiring. I can't wait to run my good old Yamaha p45 through some blues fuzzes or even electro-harmonix sound simulating pedals. It's also to very helpful you pointed at the impedance issue (terminology). This will be helpful when searching for a solution. Thanks for chatting and cheers Tom #BerlinBayBand 🏝️🎸😎👋

I love playing my casio $ 50 toys R us keyboard with all my collected delays wah chorus and overdrives specially for the drums built in. And loopers and a korg chaos pad

Nice. When I worked for EMI in the 90s, someone came into the studio with a load of small keyboards. Got great sounds!

I have a Casio CTK-2080 that I have hooked up to an array of different Effects. Part of the fun is the experimentation.

I want to hook up some pedals to an old Baldwin organ that I have. I have a feeling I will need to put a pair of jacks in between the pre amp and power amp. But once I figure it out, I will love to make 70s Canterbury prog sounds like national health with fuzzes, wahs and such.

Awesome. I found my dad's old yc-10 in the shed sometime back and that was my first port of call pulling out the boss dd3 for a bit of fun. That wah pedal sounds great though. I should collect some pedals and build board for it. To flip the script around to I remember reading something once about guitarist using swell pedals off keyboards to good effect.

4:02 the famous mighty yamaha CS-80 has that strip! My keyboard hero Eddie Jobson (and many other stars like Stevie Wonder, Don Airey too) made amazing Albums as a member of my favorite band, UK. BTW, amazing playing, Dan! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. Merry X-mas 2021!

Keyboards output signal at line level which is good bit hotter than a guitar signal. I seem to run into problems sending my 70s era transistor organ to my fuzz pedal or my memory man delay. I’m thinking the solution may involve impedance? Anyone have insight?

Dan, nice job! I did similar experiments in the early 1980s, using a Space Echo, a chorus pedal and passing an organ through Multimoog audio input and working the filter with a VC pedal. I had (have, actually) both a Hammond tonewheel organ and a Phillips combo organ that I had bought in my high school years. I think that, even though they can be cheesy, the transistor combo organs paired much better with the effects pedals than the Hammond did. It was almost as if the Hammond personality was so strong that effects were less welcome. The combo organ was sort of bland (?) enough that it left enough space on the canvas for the complimentary effects. You certainly nailed enough groove in your performance to make the combo organ-effects pedal combo a valid musical thing. I think that Sly Stone used the Yamaha at some point, so I think that he would have approved of your performance. I would love to hear you pull out this combination on a live gig.

I might get some pedals and chain them inline with my FM synth (Yamaha PSS-580) when sampling. Why not, eh?

i have got it and of course I still use any kind of effect. I'm the 1973 I used a redox a77 tape echo and a Web tape echo. Till 6years ago I had a vcs3 to add filter to organ. YC45 is a great instrument.

Very cool! Although, I must say that the wah effect sounds almost like a guitar! Still, it' all very cool to hear. I will definitely put my pedalboard under my keyboard very soon!

So, HOW do you connect the pedal to the keyboard?
@DanBakerMusic Жыл бұрын
The output of the keyboard is on a single Jack so effectively replaces the guitar. The output level is higher though but I just bring the master volume on the keyboard down. Then it’s into the pedals and out to my amp or recorder
