If there is an afterlife where everything can be known with absolute certainty, I'm sure there are a lot of folks wandering around saying (ironically), "Well I'll be damned!" 🙂 In this life, I believe the best we can do is to try to adhere to the tenets - present in pretty much all faiths - equivalent to the Bible's "Golden Rule" and "Ten Commandments".

Regarding the name Peter. “I say you are Petros, and upon this Petra I will found my church. Notice the play on words. Jesus makes a masculine name in Greek from the word for rock in Greek. Greek masculine names all end in “s” and that forms a pun with Petr-a which is a feminine noun. And “church” in Greek is ecclesia. It means an assembly of a community come together for some explicit purpose.

A quick “Hello” to readers if these comments and a quick note on the sale of Indulgences, a very sad passage in our Church history. They were sold in Mainz Germany for the local bishop to acquire enough money to pay off a loan to a bank. The loan was to pay Rome what amounted to a franchise fee. (For those wondering now I am a Catholic teacher). The underlying problem in Rome was that this provided a main source of revenue for the institution. Today the Vatican has many sources of income, but routinely goes broke every few decades, and donations bail them out. No kidding. Their most recent bad investment was in London real estate. Anyone who thinks the Church is rich should be compelled to help fund the next bailout! Frank

Regarding the title “pope”. People make to much of this. The source is somewhat obscure, but note the two consonants: p and a second p. “Papa” Has a similar ring. Pope means something like Holy Father. It is not a really FORMAL title. The man we call Pope is really Bishop of Rome, Patriarch of the West. He is also ruler of Vatican City. Diplomatically he has the rank of Prince on dignity. The Bishop of Rome was not always recognized as head of the Church. Prior to about 400 AD various leaders of regional Churches in major cities showed considerable independence in doctrine, but by 400 AD doctrines of faith, in order to have universal acceptance generally had to be accepted by Rome. Rome is also the traditional “seat” of Peter leading the Roman Church. Paul is also associated with Rome. Claiming the presences of TWO pillars of the Church added greatly to Rome’s claim to presidence over all other Churches. Peter died in Rome following the great fire of Rome in summer 64 AD under Nero. Nero publicly blamed the followers of “a certain Christus” Roman’s called them “atheists” because they didn’t believe in the gods of Rome. The real source of the fire is unknown, but National Geographic points out Nero was not in the city when the fire began, but quickly returned and tried to coordinate firefighting. Peter was crucified outside the Circus of Nero sometime after 64AD. The archeological remains of the circus, or racetrack are buried the balustrade or pillared walkway just to the left of the entrance to modern St Peter’s Basilica. His followers took his body across a road outside the circus into a necropolis, or cemetery in our Christian terms. His very humble tomb was found under the High Altar of St Peters just as tradition reports. You can view a beautiful “tour” to the tomb at Vatican.va. Note it’s not Vatican.COM, but va. Paul was also executed outside the city near “ 30:24 St Paul’s Outside the Walls” basilica.

Regarding the temporal powe assumed by the Church: The Church acquired this power when it alone remained after the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West in the fifth century. The people of Rome created it as a form of government after secular government disappeared in the invasion of the Franks. The “Donation” to which the the video refers was originally the Donation of Pepin”. Pepin was the father of Charles, who eventually came to be called “the Great”. Or Charlemagne. Charles did confirm his father’s Donation when he took the throne in late 825 AD. Charles wanted to be crowned by the pope as “King of the Franks,” who by this time were Roman Catholic. The Pope, Leo III, had other ideas. When he placed the crown on Charles head he named Charles as Emperor of a Holy Roman Empire. Charlemagne was the highest secular ruler in the West, but the Pope, as having conferred the title would be Charles overlord.

Constantine was baptized on his deathbed was not unusual. All sin is forgiven by Baptism and Constantine murdered relatives and other threats to his throne. Constantine was introduced to Christianity by his mother before he ever became emperor. Constantine’s army was Christian, so, of course Christianity would be legal. Curiously, the worst ancient persecution occurred in 305AD just a few years before Constantine’s arrival at the head of his army.

Regarding the Holy Inquisition. The Inquisition has a name of a weight similar to the Holocaust. But this is not the real story. The Inquisition did come to be used as an instrument of great oppression, BUT that was in the late 1400’s in Spain alone. The REAL Inquisition was a system of COURTS established by the Vatican on the pattern of the ancient courts of Rome. These courts observed such standards as the presumption of innocence, the use of testimony, the availability of legal representation for the accused. It was the PREFERRED court of royalty and of clergy who were immune from local prosecution. It was, in fact, the FAIREST court in Europe. Never the master of public relations, the Vatican continued to use the Inquisition for CHURCH matters through the mid 20th century before changing the body’s name to the Holy Office. It has no temporal jurisdiction. Sadly, the terrible reputation persists despite be quite incorrect.

Typical RC gibberish......Constantine was an extremely practical leader and a good Military strategist, but he was NOT particularly religious. He saw the status quo as something that HAD to be transformed into something far more workable. There were Taxable religious operations , Temples and congregations on one side of the Appian way which were labeled with the original Greek God Name, and on the other side of the road were the same-same temples saddled with Roman Names.....the Empire had to tax each one individually and a number of these entities were MAJOR Tax cheats. THEREFORE, Constantine wanted to destroy this multi-headed catastrophe and create a unified system, ONE single Church. He skillfully replaced the dozens of gods with a handful of deities poached from the Jesus Movement ....namely THE God, and son Jesus Christ. To maintain some essence of multi-god tradition, Constatine added a few Saints. Popes were basically the CEO of the Catholic, [ Universal ] ONE Church, and the Cardinals were like VPs, principally charged with developing and carrying out the mumbo-jumbo of the services. BUT more Importantly, Aided and Abetted by their platoons of servile Accountants , they could very accurately and effectively be Properly Assessed and TAXED.
