The biggest crime of the anime to me is that Ash’s Charizard never went against Alan’s or Leon’s. I know Pikachu this and that. But I felt owed that showdown, finals or elsewhere. Also my favorite moment of Pokémon anime/movies is the Charizard saving Ash from falling and taking on Entei.

I will note that later on, in the Battle Frontier, Ash's 3rd attempt at battling Brandon was with the original Kanto Trio + Pikachu in a 4v4, which Ash ended up winning. Squirtle did end up defeating Brandon's Ninjask in that battle. There's also Squirtle tying against Cissy's Seadra in their gym battle in the Orange Islands and Squirtle beating Rudy's Starmie in his gym battle. So yeah, Squirtle did get better.
