Ashina = 葦名; containing the kanji 葦 = "reeds", as in 葦の地 ["land of reeds"]. The Okina's mask also reads in English: "Before long, Okina became a demon of a swordsman." This in Japanese is: そして「翁」は、修羅となった; "And then, Okina became a Shura" 修羅 ["shura"] is the JPN for Asura, war seeking deities in Hinduism and Buddhism mythologies. Not the same person then, but totally a reference with the same core concept behind.

Okina is heavily inspired by Miyamoto Musashi, a famous ronin and writer from Japan. Okina wields a uchigatana and wakizashi in the niten ichi ryu(two heavens as one) fighting style created by Musashi himself. To finalize the combination okina is talked about being and undefeated swordsman who ascended his swordsmanship just like Musashi. If you want to even make it a stretch you can see that the final attack in the rivers of blood corpse piler combo is a downward slash that cuts through the head, the famous killing blow against sasaki kojiro, Musashi's greatest rival. The last one is a bit of a stretch and more speculation than clear evidence but it's still an interesting coincidence

@@gremmy7440 Not likely, Unohana’s Bankai was really ambiguous prior to the Bleach TYBW anime coming out, the manga never made it clear what she actually could do (a lot of people thought it was acid and not blood, for starters). If anything, it’s more likely the Bleach animators took inspiration from Elden Ring and Malenia when coming up with Unohana’s fighting style in the anime, not the other way around.

The 'Rivers of Blood' name could be inspired by Virgil's poem 'Aeneid' where a Trojan soldier travelled to Italy and became the forefather of the Romans. Like how Okina was the forefather to a group of strong, devoted warriors similar to the Romans, and also travelled to a foreign land. The poem reads, "I see wars, horrible wards, and the Tiber foaming with much blood." Tiber as in the river, which also inspired the Tiber Mariner's. There's also the whole Greek aesthetic with Mohg and you could argue the name refers to him rather than Okina, with his "new dynasty" possibly being likened to the birth of Rome, but that's probably stretching it.

I thought it didn't become rivers of blood until he actually met mogh and gave him blood powers and then it became the blood sword that it is. Mogh marveled more at the fact a swordsman could hit him at all, so he gave him blood magic and the sword morphed into that wavy red blade, and rivers of blood as the blood blade never hailed from the land of reeds directly.
