Gangaram Aggarwal was from Muzaffarnagar UP. Muzaffarnagar and sorrounding areas have lot of Banias . Gangaram later migrated to Punjab which was major centre for British after bengal due to Military HQ and most solider recruitment from this Belt after 1857 revolt by awadh and Delhi. So lot of project were goin on in Punjab. Gangaram made career there and contributed a alot after that

I am from a single village that still gets electricity from renala khurd hydroelectric power plant designed and layed the foundation by sir Ganga Ram. In past when whole Pakistan face electric crises, we were only a single village to not face a single second electricity shortfall, courtesy sir ganga ram's hydroelectric power plant. Sir Gangaram was an alum of my college, IIT Roorkee (then Roorkee College of Engineering). I graduated from there in 2015. There still is a sprawling hostel named after him, called Ganga Bhawan. Everyone who has graduated from Roorkee knows about Gangaram, and takes high pride in that.

Who are the contemporaries of Sir Gangaram? We have Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, a civil engineer in India on whose name "Engineer's Day" is celebrated. He too constructed many dams and cities. We've Sir C V Raman who got Nobel prize for conceptualizing "Raman effect" pertaining to behaviour of Light in water. Sir Gangaram belongs to that category. Having grown up in India and having lived in Delhi for several years, even quite close to Gangaram Hospital, I had not heard of this great man. And I’m ashamed to say that I was not curious about the person after whom it was named. The nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture of Pakistani, erstwhile Indian, cities were not part of our curriculum or even discussed outside, possibly, the best architecture colleges. I was aware of the rich history of education and culture of Lahore, from Mughal times through the Sikh and British rule. I knew about Lahore Fort and the Jama Masjid, but little else.
