Varela was, in my opinion, one of the forgotten heros in Philippine history who was one of the first who promoted Liberal ideals. But another young Filipino Criollo by the name of Andres Novales was also a forgotten man in history who led a revolt in Manila in 1823 due to his fellow Criollos and other groups were being mistreated by the Spanish. His followers declared him emperor. He died that year at the age of 23. He was among the many who inspired Jose Rizal. Maybe Kirby knows this already. Edit: Andres Novales supported the views of Luis Rodriguez Varela and personally aligned himself to him.

I'm grateful to this channel for giving me a wider and deeper knowledge about our country's pre-colonial past. Although not true for everyone, I would just like to appeal to my fellow Filipinos to embrace this identity now without overrating, for those who are living in the north and up to the central part, while for those who are living in the south to stop dwelling on the past to insist on separating from our country. We can never go back in the past and live like separate kingdoms. We can be proud of our ethnic group without thinking other group as tainted or inferior. We are now part of a country called the Philippines and we must do what it takes to live alongside each other with respect and in harmony like our ancestors did before there ever was Philippines, so that we can move forward and thrive. People always have so many ways to say what filipinos actually are, and so many filipinos have a whitewash mentality because of the spaniards back in the days & also because of the Americans too. If you ask a Pinoy on the streets in the Philippines: what is more beautiful light skin or brown skin? Not all but most of them would say light skin.. It makes me a bit sad because real Filipino are naturally very brown skinned We have to be proud of who and what we are, some of them don't really go out of the house anymore on a sunny day in the Philippines or they use whitening cream. I wanna say that b4 the spaniards came we Filipinos were tribal indigenous people We decorated ourselves with feathers' example: igorot tribe, Lumad Tribe, Aetas/Negritos, the Badjaos, Kalinga Tribe, and they all still exist deep in the rainforests or hills. I would say we are indigenous Asians who lives in civiliced and modern society now, we have brown skin, full Lips, wider noses, and our eyes aren't that typical small compared to Vietnamese or Chinese n Korean & Japanese people. We should be proud of what we really are and we should know n do some more research about our ancestors :)) and alot of foreigners from other Asian country's came to the Philippines hundreds of years ago. In Reality we are indigenous People in the continent Asia, in South East Asia ^^ Peace & Love.

There are no exact historical records how this country was settled in the past. What we have on the records are theories, studies and scientific probabilities made by western scholars and accepted by our local scholars. Let us go back in time and examine how the world was repopulated after the Great Flood if that is acceptable. From the lineage of Noah thru his three sons to the present day. There is a book which tell and describe how men began to multiply again on the face of the earth and describing their pattern of migration. It was recorded in the Bible but explained in more details which give us further understanding. Read the Book of Jubilee others call it the Book of Divisions.

Get rid of the "colonial influences" and Filipino culture wont be distinct from the rest of south east Asian countries. Natives don't identify themselves together with other native ethnic groups in the Philippines as one nation rather they only identify themselves according their local ethnolinguistic group which they came from. Example, a native who born in Pampanga called themselves Kapampangan or born from Katagalugan they called themselves as Tagalogs. But there's this term that made by spaniards to refer the natives and this is the term "Indios". But this term didn't accept by many because of the negative sentiment over the term.

Now I understand why The Philippines is so poor. "Free from Foreign Business Influence" Foreign Businesses or Foreign Business Influence play a vital role in a country's macroeconomic growth. As a matter of fact, The Philippines does not allow foreigners to own land. This limits The Philippines economically. LET ME EXPLAIN HOW... The Philippines government tries it's hardest to influence foreign manufacturers to move to The Philippines based on low labor cost. However, not very many foreign Businesses will because foreigners are not allowed to own land without a Treaty with the Government. Foreign Business Decision makers believe it would be a bad business decision to build a business on land they do not own. Owning land on which a Business is built, gives owners absolute influence over their business. As a Business Broker, I absolutely agree. This limits The Philippines Macroconomical growth to mostly Filipino ingenuity. Which is clearly limited because of the lack of resources. The Philippines Government is impeding it's own "overall economic welfare" by holding on to the idea of "No Foreign Business Influence". Although Luis's idea of "no foreign business influence" sounds noble; in reality, the idea is very foolish in terms of economics.

The 1st ppl were proly the ancestors of the negritos (Aeta, Ati) who are decended from the 1st waves of ppl migrating out of Africa. They inhabited the islands for 22,000+ years and were also the 1st inhabitants of Malaysia, Indonesia and also part of the Pacific Islands. They may also be related to the Australian aborigines. Filipinos you see today (brown with asian features) are descended from the indigenous ppl of Taiwan (though Taiwan is the name the Han chinese gave that island when they started colonizing it) who came to the Philippines thousands of years after the 1st negritos inhabited the islands, maybe around 4000 - 5000 BC. Once our ancestors came and met the negritos they made an agreement that negritos can have the mountains (high lands) while our ancestors had the low lands by the seas and rivers. The low landers of the Philippines are often called "Austronesian" by social scientist because the theory is that our ancestors left Taiwan, migrating to the northern tip of the Philippines and kept moving southward to Malaysia and Indonesia then some went west migrating all the way to Madagascar in east Africa and some went east migrating all the way to the pacific islands like Samoa, Hawaii, Tonga and the Ester Islands. The evidence comes from the commonality of the languages between the different ethnic groups of these various places and also certain genetic markers. Together were called "Austronesian speaking people".

@Histerov YT Of course my comment is an abridged version of a more deeper history that involves Austronesians, Papuans, Melansians, and Dark skin aborigines and the genetic, linguistic and cultural mixing with these various groups over thousands of years. Interestingly, theres a lot of Melanesian ethnic groups who speak austronesian languages.

Wrong. The first Filipino (who conceptualized the word for us as a people) was a Philippine Count of Mexican roots Luis Manuel Valentín Rodríguez-Varela y Sancena (13 February 1768-1826). This concept passed down to people like the Gomburzas who personally knew Luis Varela, who then taught this concept to their pupils, one of which was Jose Rizal's older brother, who was one of the greatest influence in Jose Rizal's life.
@rots.8662 жыл бұрын
Rizal was not the first who conceptualized the word to include everyone who is culturally Filipino, as Filipino. But Rizal was the first person to bring up the concept of Asian Nationalism, preceding Sun Yat Sen, or Mahatma Ghandi.

Indio nga tawag satin ng mga kastila nuon so hindi tayo Filipino as the old spanish standard. Kung tutuusin mga slaves tayo nuon under the rule of Spain and they name our land Philippines for King Phillip that time. So sana nabago ang pangalan ng Pilipinas nuon. .

How Varela reclaim being a Filipino if he is just claiming it or wanting to be with the Filipino count?
@joema48444 жыл бұрын
We should not call ourselves Filipino because we are no longer under the oppression/control of Spain. As a people we must begin to revive what we are and our true identity before the colonial killers landed upon the sacred shores of our beloved motherland. We are not Filipino (slave name) nor are we PNoy, we are Maharlikan. Long Live the Federal Republic of Maharlika (FRM) and to Maharlikans.
@SDKidX6193 жыл бұрын
Filipinos are not Maharlikans either. Maharlikan is a tagalog term that should only apply to Tagalogs. If we stop referring to ourselves as Filipinos and revive who we truly are then I'm not a Maharlikan but Bicolano. Pushing for Tagalogism will only cause more friction amongst our already divided country.
@johnramirez32472 жыл бұрын
Who cares?? We wouldn't become a one nation without the spanish and americans anyway. And by the way "maharlika" is a title for a warrior individuals in the tagalog precolonial society. It's not even a name of a place.

Knowing that originally 'filipinos' are only those spaniards born in our islands, I don't want to be called a Filipino nor our country be called Philippines. What do we call our islands before the spaniards came here? What do our ancestors call themselves? I want the name of our country to be changed. Philippines is so foreign and it doesn't represent us with honor.

Don’t want to sound like a hater because I’m not, I know you probably didn’t mean to but this video is a little disrespectful & demeaning towards the First Nation People of Philippines. The Negritos. Here in Australia the Indigenous Australians (formerly know as the Aboriginals) & also the Torrest Strait Islanders are considered the original & the first Australians. In New Zealand, the Maoris were the First Nation People so they are considered the first New Zealanders. It doesn’t work in a way, that when the country was established is only when they should be considered the first Filipinos. If you were leaving in your house first & no one was there before you, and then someone moved in, you were still there before them so you are the first owner of the house. No matter if a new set of rules or government was placed after the time. Please don’t confuse your viewers, our own people, and foreigners. This isn’t correct. No disrespect. One love! ✌🏽 Yes I am a modern day Filipino.
