My favourite part of Elizabeth's speech to the troops at Tilbury (apparently... It may well have been some patriotic PR): "I know I have the body but of a weak, feeble woman; but I have the heart and stomach of a king, and of a king of England too, and think foul scorn that Parma or Spain, or any prince of Europe, should dare to invade the borders of my realm…"

I live and grew up in Richmond, with the remains of Richmond Palace (where Elizabeth died i actually managed to blag my way in to look like the room) so really interested in Tudor history. I also worked at Kew Gardens where in what is now the car park at Brentford Gate there used to be a huge oak tree where Elizabeth is meant to have met Dudley for secret meetings, the tree was brought down by lightning in the 1800’s and apparently was made into a huge dining table for Windsor Castle

Wow, wish my dining table was that interesting! I went to Lincoln's Inn (this is aaaages ago) and they had a chair that was there exclusively for the use of Elizabeth I, if she ever came to visit!
