The Ajivikas sect was an important sect of Ancient India. In this video, I talk about the history of the Ajivikas, their philosophy, and how they declined. I also discuss the philosophy of the Ajivika sect and how they were viewed by other sects. The Ajivka religious tradition was one of the most important religious traditions that came into existence around the 6th century BC. Its founder was Makkhali Goshala. After the decline of the Mauryan Empire, the Ajivikas also disappeared from North India but in the South, particularly in the Cholamandalam area, they survived up until the 14th century.

Clean, concise video highlighting Ajivikas, loved it! I wonder how Ajivikas functioned and related to the common people? As in other traditions had a set of step/methodologies/traditions that a common man could follow to initiate into it and attain moksha. Was there something of this kind with ajivikas? Did they had temples or other places of worship? How did a comman man initiate into ajivika tradition?
@JayVardhanSingh
@JayVardhanSingh 2 жыл бұрын
Although the evidence about their initiation ceremony is scant but it does appear that their initiation ceremony was quite tough. Most sources say that those seeking admission into the Ajivika fold were subjected to physical pain and hardships. If qualified then they were admitted to the Ajivika Sangh. They are no reference to temples or places of worship of the Ajivikas.

I don't think either Buddhists or Jains presented the view of Ajivikas properly. The Buddhists' texts were complied hundreds of years of the Buddha's pirinirvana. They hardly represent the original Buddha's view about other religious schools. Ajivikism and Jainism were the two religious communities that had much more followers than that of the Buddha. Just thinking about this fact, you will not believe Ajivikas' doctrine was so simple as their rivals presented.
@JayVardhanSingh
@JayVardhanSingh 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right that Buddhism and Jainism didn't present the subtleties of the Ajivika doctrine but we can only base our understanding on what sources we presently have. The Ajivika doctrine was definitely more nuanced but the fact that they were strict determinist is not disputed. Your statement about the Buddhist texts is not correct because the Tripitaka texts were compiled just after the death of Buddha.

Ajivikism and Jainism had more followers compared with boudha that just outrageous, The impact of Buddhism and buddha is profound in the hearts and minds of the South and southeast Asian populace. Ajivikism school is pretty close to Charwaka darshan, may not be the same but historically their takers were mighty limited. certainly cannot be said the same for Jainism but it certainly had equal or less impact compared to Buddhism. Try bringing in some attestation when such frivolous claims are made.

Maybe Ajivaka is Ajisaka/Aji Saka. A unifying figure on the island of Java... As we know, many refugees from the Kalingga kingdom moved to Java after losing the war against the Muria/Maurya dynasty and together with Sundanese people formed the Medang Keling kingdom (predecessor to the Mataram kingdom). Maybe Aji Saka's teachings entered the island of Java at this time... Many similar concepts, such as sukma/jiwa/atma, raga/body, etc... Ajisaka brought aksara (Hanacaraka script), agama (religion), and Saka calendar (still used today in hybrid form with the Hijriyah system, Pananggalan Jawa)...

Buddhism which originated in India, spread rapidly throughout South and Southeast Asia, becoming a dominant religious and cultural influence in countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. The teachings of the Buddha, such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, have had a profound impact on the philosophical and spiritual beliefs of the people in these regions. On the other hand, Ajivikism, which also originated in India, was a religion that believed in fate and predestination. It had a relatively small following and did not have the same level of influence and impact as Buddhism. Similarly, Jainism, which emphasizes non-violence and self-control, had a significant following in India but did not spread as widely as Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia. While these religions have played a role in the history of the region, it is important to recognize that Buddhism has had a much greater impact on the culture, society and spiritual beliefs of the people in South and Southeast Asia. It is crucial to be accurate and well-informed when making claims about historical religions and their followers.

What I find is that from what we know of Ajivika philosophy seems more aligned with true non-dual Advaita thinking than the idea of a good and bad karma. We can only be aware of vasanas and our awareness alone guides us to go beyond them. I had found some ascetic Advaitics who seemed contradictory in that even though they say they are beyond both desires and aversions, in action just beng ascetic shows them to be tethered to desire and aversions.

@@Vergil-sparda08 I am looking at it from a deeper philosophical speculation rather than a ‘follow the rule book’ approach. If you think about it (rather than follow what is told) there seems to be some parallel between determinism (Ajivika) and monism/pantheism (Advaita). A monist world would be deterministic and vice versa. They kind of prove each other’s world view.

The Ajivikas rejected the supremacy of the Vedas, so there were Non-Vedic. Yes, you're right, the Ajivikas were known for practicing Astrology and divination. I don't know about the this particular story. But in the Buddhist sources there is a story that an Ajivika astrologer who was in the court of Bindusara prophesied about the greatness of Ashoka. well if you want to know about the history of Ajivikas, there are a lot of Videos on "Aaseevegam" it is said that the Ajivikas were in existence even during the time of Sanatana Dharma, they opposed the superiority of the Vedas, why you cannot find Ajivikas temples in the North Because most Temples were destroyed during the Mauryan Empire mainly during the time of Ashoka he destroyed those temples because Buddhists and Jains mainly opposed the Ajivikas idealogy, and yes Ajivikas too have temples, but you would find them a lot in southern parts of India, even today they are being practised and Brahmins do not do rituals in these temples because even according to Ajivikas rules Brahmins aren't allowed and they actually praise their Gods and Goddesses with meat. for example, if you did not Kali, Ayannar, Jaggamma are actually Ajivika Gods and Goddesses. Kali in Ajivikas are called "Kotravai" they say that she was the mother of all South Indians you see today. even the Cholas prayed to this Goddess during the time of war, then later when "Veidiga Mandham" or "Sanatana Dharma" was spread in South India, they even included Ajivikas Gods and Goddesses into their religion that is one of the reasons why Hinduism has way too many Gods and Goddesses. when these Sanatana Kings went and conquered many places where ever they went they just included the Natives Gods and Goddess into their Religion Sanatana Dharma. even today you can find Ajivikas temples in the Deep South. if you want more info I can provide you with some videos. Because I can see many South Indians trying to revive Ajivikas again, for example, if you see Ganesh were the symbol of Ajivikas he was not actually a God that is why you see there is no logic how a kid with an Elephant head can live, in Ajivikas Temples you can see Ganesh everywhere. even Ajivikas say that Shaivism and Vaishnavism were a Part of Ajivikas.

Maybe centuries of destruction of their literatures by rival philosophical and religious groups have wiped off their dominant presence in the ancient world . So has happened with many other sects like Zoroastarians Kafiristanis of Afghanistan and Manichists of west asia . Only the Jews have survived and are a potential presence in the modern world . The Ajivikas were not so lucky . Maybe it was ordained in their destiny which they believed so much and they vanished 😟

He's not the founder of Ajiveeka. He's Markali Kosalar of Tamil Nadu from ancient southern India. He was a monk who spread Tamil Aasivagam. The Three Ayyanars worshiped by people in Tamil Nadu are the real founders. That's why their statues are oy in Tamil Nadu and bhramins never could loot them in the name of Sanadhan.

buddhist and jain dates as per buddhist calendars and jain traditions, not conspiracy theorists in youtube comment section. Buddha's dates are based on Indian and Sinhalese buddhist canons. Indian texts like Vinaya Pitaka date him to 448 BCE (this is called Short Chronology). The Sinhalese Buddhist texts like Mahavamsa and Dipavamsa date him to 624 BCE. The former is called Short Chronology and the latter is called Long Chronology. Modern Chronology accepted by historians is between these two chronologies. What you are calling "indic texts" are actually Chinese texts(also in Vietnam, Korea and Japan) . They have various dates from 949 BCE to 2420 BCE. These are not historically accepted. Its pretty funny. You guys are rejecting the traditional canons maintained in India and Sri Lanka, calling them "western dates". And embracing East Asian canons instead. "We laugh at u, not with u." You really love these low effort overused WhatsApp jokes to validate yourself. For others who don't follow narratives by Abhijit Chavda fans who only get their info from WhatsApp/Facebook groups, read "Date of the Buddha" by Karam Tej Sarao, former head of Buddhist Studies in Delhi University (from his book Buddhism and Jainism (Encyclopedia of Indian Religions)). Indian historical events are dated based on linguistic, philological, archaeological, paleographic and numismatic studies of our history. But the consipiracy theorists made a canon based on the Chinese texts that say Buddha was born in 949 BCE (ignoring our own canon in Indian texts) where Mauryan Empire was contemporary to Cyrus and Gupta Empire was around 4th century BCE (ignoring Ashoka's Greek inscriptions which mentions his contemporary rulers in Greece, Egypt and Selucid Empire). Clearly the conspiracy theorists don't read the Indian texts that they think they believe in.
