I am a person born into Hinduism. I left religion and became agnostic, no one in my family was killed for my idea. I love that Hindus have freedom of thought and expression and we do not bully people to convert to Hinduism. This itself makes me happy about hinduism even though I myself don't follow many Hindu customs.

Shruthi Reddy - "you left religion" but hindu/dharmic tradition is NOT the same as religion. The word religion comes from the latin word (religaire) meaning to be bound (by a book). It aptly fits the blind faith Abrahamic religions. Point is none of the Abrahamic religions were built around any well validated metaphysics. It led to blind belief in a book, needless middlemen/prophets, angels, non existent heaven/hell, fantasy stories (propagated as history) and half baked responsibilities towards people and nature due to lack of understanding of karma or cause and effect created due to violation of balance of natural law or dharma, reincarnation (birth/death duality cycle) and moksha (microcosm to macrocosm. What is dharma? Dharma has the Sanskrit root dhri, which means “that which upholds” or “that without which nothing can stand” or “that which maintains the stability and harmony of the universe.” Dharma encompasses the natural, innate behavior of things, duty, law, ethics, virtue, etc. Every entity in the cosmos has its particular dharma - from the electron, which has the dharma to move in a certain manner, to the clouds, galaxies, plants, insects, and of course, man. Man’s understanding of the dharma of inanimate things is what we now call physics. Violation of dharma creates karma or cause and effect and reincarnation. What is hindu/dharmic tradition? Hindu tradition was built around the well validated Dharmic/Vedic metaphysics Sankhya and represented in the form of temples, deities, rituals, symbols, festivals, mantras, YOGA/TANTRA, pilgrimage centers, mutts, puranas/ithihasas (Ramayana and Mahabharatha) with allegorical stories which represent laws of nature, shastras (dance, music, science, Upanishads) to follow dharma, reduce KARMA and put an end reincarnation (birth/death duality cycle) so that everyone gets Moksha (microcosm to macrocosm). Duality cycles of nature are mediated by the conscious, immanent (athma), transcendent and omnipresent Shiva. Duality cycles of nature are sustained by Dharma (so the hindu/dharmic tradition)

@@Coderama I have answers to all your questions, yes you heard it right... I know you are an Indian and so am I, can I know your age? Unless you make an effort to understand (which you are clearly not!) you won't understand the extremely complex reality we live in, which has been explained thoroughly only in the vedic literature and scriptures.. If you just want to scoff at it, it's your mistake, at times you may have found certain maths or other subjects illogical at the first glance, but obviously they aren't, otherwise they won't stand with time.... The vedic literature talks about unchanging absolute reality which is eternal in nature, so obviously the vedic literature and the truths in it are eternal as well (try to imagine eternity, infiniteness? ), so it does not depend on our puny mind's logic to stand but as the sun stands independently , showering anyone who is eligible with the knowledge of the absolute reality, absolute truth in its fullness... I will repeat again, the absolute does not depend on the temporary (our puny mind's and weak material bodies that we now inhabit) , it stands on its own unlike us ...

@the one who judges the book by its cover I do not think we should propagate this kind of thinking. I learnt sanskrit and also learnt the vedas and upanishads. But generally, vedas and upanishads are only taught as memorisation and for chanting. Me and my brother, we looked into the upanishads, read old bhashyas and translations as well. It is super interesting and I recommend that anyone start their journey into them with a sense of reverence and respect that we are taught to give to any form of knowledge and wisdom. @Nope, no translation can be perfect. Start with RK mutt/ missions books go through translations Shankaracharya's Bhashyas (commentaries) and Max Muller's works. Just remember that personal biases and upbringing will obviously impact the translation. Read as many as possible. Happy journey is this amazing process. Oh! you could also listen to some audible series available, but just remember that everyone understands it differently and that is fine.

@the one who judges the book by its cover I feel what we call Hinduism is the analogous to philosophy today. There are many thoughts, some apparently contradictory. The is a verse which says 'ekam sat viprah bahuda vadanti' truth is singular, the wise call it by different names. There are many more such sentences. There have been debates between shankara and mandana Mishra etc. It is a process or a journey rather than a destination probably. Check out nasadiya suktam, it was mentioned in the Allahabad ayodhya verdict as well, it leaves a question mark asking 'who knows'. I don't think there is anything like the correct branch, or maybe I don't know it yet. There is a lot of simile and metaphor etc, so just allow for that as well. Also in Sanskrit word are generally derived from attributes, there could be a word which means 'that which holds water' it maybe present in translations as a pot or a cloud or lake etc. It could be that confusing to translate. Just a heads up

Arya is Sanskrit for 'Noble' which was conferred only to the tribes in the South Asian subcontinent that followed Hinduism and the dharmic path. Nothing to do with race, as many different tribes of different ethnicities were described as Arya in The Rigveda) descent. I'm Indian and have no affinity for Christianity (no disrespect at all. I just don't feel any sort of deep feeling for it either way) so I doubt common ancestry has anything to do with Dave's affinity.

Hinduism even allows to have oral ex . In one of the Hindu scriptures called koka shaatra chapter 9 allow us to have oral pleasure in 69 position . @@taitreyarr2715 Lol. Aryan "invasion" has been "debunked" by mainstream scholars, but it seems there may be some political reasons for it. Aryan migration undoubtedly happened. The Aryans were descendants of the Indo-Europeans, who were war like, so its not too far of an assumption to say the migration wasn't so peaceful. I can talk about the Aryan invasion further if you wish. Saying there's "no real basis" is just proof that you have confirmation bias. Genetic evidence of the modern northern indians show large portions of steppe migration (R1a haplogroup); there is undeniable evidence of the connection between all Indo-european languages like Sanskrit, Greek, and other western languages; and the Indo-european religions all are extremely similar. Even Tilaak, the founder of modern India, didn't believe the Aryans originated in India. I will happily continue on this conversation with topics such as Sinauli excavations and Rakighara, which allegedly "debunk" the Aryan invasion (they don't). The only other theory that is possible is the Out of India theory, which is so flimsy that only ardent Hindu Nationalists or even Hindu Fascists believe it. Even moderate Hindu news sources can not defend Out of India.

@@ganapathysubramanian2029 Current Conesus on the Aryan migration is that they came into India in migrations ranging from 2000BC to 1500BC. They did bring the vedic traditions like the Rig veda which they finally put on paper around 1500 BC. The connection is that when the Aryans came into India, many of the teachings of the Vedas and Harappa intermixed and became modern Hinduism. Many of the big gods in Hinudism, like Shiva, are amalgamations of Vedic gods and non-vedic gods from Harappan.

आज से ढाई हजार साल पहले भगवान बुद्ध और महावीर हो गए थे और उनसे पहले उनकी तीर्थंकर हुए थे 24 जब 1915 में खुदाई हुई तो पूरे भारत में जमीन के नीचे बुद्ध मिले चारों तरफ अशोक के शिलालेख मिले जिसमें कहीं भी हिंदू धर्म वैदिक धर्म सनातन धर्म का उल्लेख नहीं था बौद्ध धर्म की 80 से ज्यादा यूनिवर्सिटी मिली है पूरे भारत में , और यह धर्म जापान तक फैल गया था , जबकि हिंदू धर्म का एक गुरुकुल भी नहीं मिला है और ना ही उसकी कोई ईट मिली है 😂 वैदिक धर्म के सारे के सारे ग्रंथ संस्कृत में देवनागरी लिपि में लिखे गए हैं परंतु वर्तमान खोज में यह सिद्ध हो गया है कि संस्कृत पाली और प्राकृत से बनी है और देवनागरी लिपि धम्म लिपि जिसे ब्राह्मी लिपि का नाम दिया गया है से बनी हुई है,,,, धम्म लिपि में कोई भी संस्कृत में लिखा हुआ लेख नहीं मिल रहा है 😂 क्योंकि भारत का ब्राह्मणी करण आठवीं सदी से शुरू हुआ था , इन्होंने बौद्ध धर्म की जातक कथाओं से रामायण महाभारत को कॉपी किया और उसको बढ़ा चढ़ाकर ब्राह्मनी करण , ब्राह्मणों के सारे ग्रंथ अश्लीलता से भरे हुए हैं वेदों में तो 35% लोगों का इंद्र पर लिखे हुए हैं जो कि बलात्कारी है और साथ ही साथ उसको सांड की बलि दिए जाने का प्रावधान है यह लोग पारसियों की तरह अग्नि की पूजा करते थे तैमूर लंग के समय खुद ब्राह्मणों ने माना कि हम विदेशी है और अग्नि पूजा करते हैं उपनिषद से लगाकर सारे ग्रंथ इनके भेद भाव से भरे हुए और ब्राह्मण को श्रेष्ठ बताते हुए बाकी सब को तुच्छ सिद्ध करते हुए नारी का शोषण करते हुए अश्लीलता से भरे हुए हैं वेदों की मिलावट की बात करते हैं परंतु वेदों के ओरिजिनल भाष्य से भी देख ले तो उसमें भी अश्लीलता नारी शोषण और भेदभाव भरा हुआ है , खुद ब्रह्मा अपनी बेटी सरस्वती का बलात्कार करता है और उसी से शादी भी करता है 😂,,, यही सेम कहानी अब्राहम और सारा की है 😂,,, भारत का गोल्डन समय तो बौद्ध धर्म का था यह कचरा धर्म कभी भी भारत का महान समय नहीं हो सकता चंद्रगुप्त से पहले महावीर के समय 8 से ज्यादा नास्तिक धर्म मौजूद थे पर किसी में भी ब्राह्मण का इतिहास नहीं है और आज ब्राह्मण अपना इतिहास भी बोद्ध धर्म में ही देख रहे है और ढूंढ रहे हैं मतलब उनका कोई स्वतंत्र अस्तित्व ही नहीं था अब मेसोपोटामिया की सभ्यता मिल गई सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता मिल गई सब कुछ मिल गया पर इन लोगों का कुछ नहीं मिला😂 जब अकबर ने अशोक के शिलालेख को पढ़ाने के लिए ब्रह्मणों को बुलाया तो वे उसे पढ़ ही नहीं पाए 😂 , ना सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता की लिपि पढ़ पाए और अपने आप को सनातन कहते हैं 😂 यह सनातन शब्द भी बुद्ध के एसौ धम्मो सनंतानो से लिया गया है 😂 मूर्तिकला भी जैन और बौद्ध धर्म में मिली है जबकि वेदों में तो मूर्ति पूजा थी ही नहीं और बाद में ही बौद्ध धर्म की तारादेवी को काली देवी बनाया गया जैन और बौद्ध मंदिरों को कब्जा करके उसे हिंदू मंदिर में बदला गया , आठवीं सदी में शंकराचार्य की द्वारा जो खुद प्रच्छन्न बुद्ध था उसके द्वारा इस काल्पनिक धर्म की नींव रखी गई😂 यहां तक कि गणेश जी भी बोद्ध धर्म से थे जिसे एलीफेंट बुद्धा कहा जाता है जिसकी जापान में भी मूर्तियां है , उसको भी कॉपी किया जिसको भी प्रॉब्लम हो , जो सनातन धर्म के प्राचीन होने के सबूत देना चाहता है वह Science journy चैनल देखे और Rational world पर डिबेट के लिए आ सकता है

So accurate info on the Vedas 👍 I think what most of us Hindus in India follow today is the Advaita Vedanta (non dualism) at a philosophical level and Bhakti (Devotion to your favourite deity) as the theism. Rituals followed by priests come from the Vedas (Fire or food sacrifice or Yajna ). Mythology & festivals from the two epics - Ramayan, Mahabharat & Puranas. It will be interesting to know when we switched from Vedas to Puranas.

The easiest way to explain is that God, the creator is experiencing its "self" through us. From my point of view in a more detailed version is that God, the creator, is in a constant state of existing and non existing at the same time, it "is" and "is" not, it will forever be and never was. We live on the the existing side of its "self". All that exists in this world is a part of God, the creator's "self". The purpose of creation is so God, the creator can experience a state of existence of not knowing its "self" exists. Those who find their true "self" are known as a bhodi or an awakened one and are able to see how the nature of man and the world function in a way they understand only to themselves, the more knowledge a bhodi gained they were able to express themselves (their "self") in a more ways so people could try and understand. this is what gives it oral tradition and was never written down because the true word of God, the creator needs no words and needs no translation, it is life and can be easily explained by this fact of life alone by finding your "self". All that has happened has never happened and will continue to happen. The vedas were written by the ones who found their "self", the awakened ones, a bhodi, and were all given different types of knowledge to pass down through time for those who struggle to find their "self" in order to guide them to a better way of life. What keeps God, the creator so well hidden from its "self" is the duality inside creation that is all life. This is the duality of good and evil, dead or alive. They both have to be there in order for each to exist in its own right or else one without the other would have no "purpose". Humans are closest to being like God, the creator, in a sense that we have the ability to become aware of the "self" but the trouble with that is the creation of the human body and that the body has needs, and also has wants known as the human condition. Those wants and needs of the human condition are what keep the creator hidden from its "self". The bodies needs are what keep the body alive. The bodies wants are everything thing that we feel and desire of the material world which the body becomes attached to such as love for family, friends, pets, etc. we also have desires for sexual pleasure and over indulge ourselves on food and guilty pleasures and are at a constant battle with our "self" conscious between the good and evil thoughts of our human condition. We have to learn to live with the human condition and all that it is because it is God, the creator in all its forms of its existing state. @भीष्म प्रतिज्ञा I know and agree! You are right to point those things out. Although some have seen (and still see) Buddhism as separate from of Hinduism (or Sanatana Dharma). From what I understand, Buddhism has been considered as being nastika, or an unorthodox form of Hinduism; some authors have even stated that Buddhism is a “heretical” form of Hinduism. But Buddhism directly comes from Hinduism and both have many similarities. Several Hindu schools are extremely close to Buddhism in several ways, especially some yogic and tantric ones; even Advaita Vedanta could potentially be seen as almost Buddhist in some ways (especially to Westerners). The links are so obvious that they’re undeniable and one cannot totally separate Buddhism form Hinduism. Buddhism didn’t appear from a void, it started to gain importance at a time when its central ideas (detachment from samsara in order to attain nirvana, etc.) were becoming very important and were shared by many religious groups in South Asia; and therefore those concepts are of course important in Hinduism too. Even Sufism (or at least some Sufi schools), present in India at least since the time of the Mughals, supports the idea of destroying ones ego (or individual worldly self) and becoming one with God. We do have to take into consideration the diversities of both religions though; some schools in both religions can be quite different. I’m over-simplifying of course, things are far more subtle. This is why a video could be useful, especially for people who know very little about the subject.

What people don't understand is that the vedas~the only books representing the true philosophy of Hinduism at its entirety is encrypted and requires learning Nirukta or sanskrit etymology for proper understanding. A person after learning Nirukta+Nighantu(sanskrit etymology) will know that the myriad names aka pantheon is not different entities but different names of the same supreme and thus the whole veda then becomes monotheistic.

Hinduism is like a river with various tributaries, people like Wendy Doniger have focused on the tributaries more than the river & have come to a conclusion that there is no ONE river but many instead of the conclusion that there are many tributaries that join ONE big majestic river. Hindu philosophy has six different school of thoughts, all differ from each other yet the end goal is the same, not the search of divinity but of the ultimate truth. This inspiration for the ultimate truth comes from the Upanishads, but there is no one Upanishads. To understand that higher truth there are several ways, Jnana, Karma & Devotion. Hinduism is like a Banyan tree. The Banyan tree is unique among trees because the branches sprout first in it & eventually bow down to the ground & become the roots of a new tree, each providing nourishment & stability to the entire tree. The tree is a single structure but functions like a complex decentralized organisation. It's multiple roots & branches represent multiple origin & sources, all parts of the same living organism, even if the whole cannot be comprehended at one glance. Hinduism is a network, an open architecture intertwined internally & externally. It is naturally assimilative and this makes it a highly efficient system for adaptation & for the fostering of diversity.

I was in a Hindu cult from '87 tot '90, practicing yoga, meditation, fasting, etc. Because al "rituals" were done collectively, they were extremely powerful and quite unbearable for the ego structure (i.e. first giving lots of bliss but then making me sick). But there were also quite some experiences of universal love and even kundalini. I never speak of those experiences because no-one in the West will understand them. I left the cult because the fasting and the stress on my huge (Western) ego was litterary killing me. What I learned is that the magical powers of ancient religions should not be underestimated!

True, it’s actually all the same religion with slightly difference in gods. Greek pantheon, Elohim Semitic pantheon, Egyptian pantheon are so alike. Hinduism is the only one that kinda survived. Although it altered massively after the Maurian Empire.

@@Md-vo2vb Hinduism(Sanatana Dharma) created the concept of Dharma,Karma,samsara and other fundamental concepts. So, all other Indian religions like Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism derive and accept the core concept like Dharma, Karma and samsara etc, hence, they are called dharmic faith/religions.

When we Hindus offer things via fire to God, it's called HAWAN, and have seen rarely offering food or fruits but most of the time we put cow Ghee (clarified butter from cow's milk) and different type of vanaspati and Jadiboti that is really good for human inhalation for enormous health benefits. It would be great to mention the sage Dvaipayana who systematized the Vedas, introduced Itihasas (Mahabharata), and gave the commentary on Vedanta known as Bhagavata Purana. The Vedas include more than it was mentioned here. Also, there is a big dispute over the age when the Vedas were written because the prominent scientific argument place them around 1500bce because there is a word "nirvana" there, and this means it can't be before Buddha. Which is not a strong argument for one who understands Sanskrt. The video you did on Ramanuja was much more accurate. Dont get me wrong, I like your work and channel.

A point on the controversial AIT/AMT: I've spent a lot of time digging in to this, and the most updated scholarship on the matter accepts that there is no evidence of an invasion (textually, historically, archeologically), but definitely evidence of gene flow. The very recent excavations and genome mapping gives us a story that lies somewhere in between: As the IVC was settled as an agricultural/pastoral society by people from the subcontinent, it attracted peoples and tribes from surrounding areas as one of the world's first urban conglomerations (Iran, Central Asia, Subcontinental Heartland, Tibet). An archaic form of PIE came to the IVC initially and (over a much longer timeline than first though) this uniquely syncretic society developed Archaic/RigVedic Sanskrit and the heart of Vedic culture, which in it's most native form evolved into modern "Hinduism" as the Saraswati dried up and moved the IVC heartland to the Ganga. At the same time, as the Vedic culture went West, it manifested in the Avesta, and as the dispersed populations traveled West to Europe, they carried the kernels of what would manifest in the Yazidi people as well.

Namaste The Rig Veda has 10,552 mantras grouped into 1028 suktas or hymns each having roughly ten mantras. The suktas are further grouped into 10 mandalas. Rig veda has only Rik mantras which have a metrical structure. Of these 2456 mantras are in the well known Gayatri meter ( The popular Gayatri mantra is also in this meter). As per Shri Aurobindo Ghosh , Rik is the mantra of divine consciousness.Its brings its light of revelation. There are around 400 rishis in the rig veda of whom atleast 25 are women. The Yajur Veda primarily consists of Yajus mantras which are rhythmic phrases not set to any particular meter ( Unlike Rig Veda) The popular Taittiriya Samhita of Krishna Yajur Veda has around 4773 mantras , of which around 2/3 rd are yajus mantras ( rest are Riks) The Yajur Veda deals with Yajna or rituals to appease devatas The Sama Veda consists of Riks with the added dimension of music. The Atharva veda has 5987 mantras grouped into 730 suktas and 20 Kandas ( Chapters) Most of the mantras were revealed to the lineage of Rishis Atharva and Angirasa. It contains knowledge of healing, construction (Vastu) and societal conduct amongst others There are three types of Vedic Mantras Rik - Mantras set to a particular meter like Gayatri Yajus - Mantras in Prose form not in any particular meter Saaman - Mantras used for singing Rig Veda Samhita has only Rik mantras, Yajur Veda Samhita has both Yajus and Rik mantras , Sama Veda Samhita has Saman mantras while Atharva Veda Samhita consists mainly of Riks and some Yajus. I would also be interested to learn about the earliest roots we can trace for the Sramana Movement of NE India, that led to the formalization of core concepts of Jainism, Buddhism, and Vedanta Hinduism (Upanishads). Are their early common roots to all three? If so, how early and arising in what context? Or, is the Sramana Movement an original innovative intellectual movement with its origin arising from or in reaction to the social economic political conditions of NE India of the middle of the first millennium BCE?

If you define theism as the belief in a dualistic "god" that exists as an entity separate from the Self, then to be atheist means the opposite - to reject that concept. In a sense all schools of Advaita Vedanta are atheist in that they reject the existence of this dualism - where it get's complicated is that the rejection of dualism is not the same as as rejection of the concept of infinite manifestations of the one ultimate reality, and thus the belief in deities insofar as they represent abstract concepts that are consciously deified and worshipped as a way to make sense of the material world. Alternatively, if you define theism as the belief in a fundamental "soul" of the universe or as a belief in "existence" itself, then atheism as a rejection of that concept is personified in a religion like Buddhism, which not only rejects deity worship (in it's most philosophical pure form), but also in a universal soul from whence it all came.

Silence, Sanathana Dharma accepts atheists and calls them Nasthika. The Dharma gives freedom to its followers in all aspects. Believing or not believing in the existence of God is never an issue with the Dharma. One is free to choose one's own way of attaining Moxa, or liberation as long as it doesn't hurt others.

Yeah because in Hinduism Believe in God is not central but Moksha or salvation is hence, its not necessary to believe in God to attain Moksha. Atheist Schools are called Nastika in Hinduism.

These two seem similar at the first site but their goal is infact the opposite. Advaita focuses of the Self and says that the Self is God and there is no transcendent God , it recognises the Self as God in some way . But Ibn Arabis Philosophy emphasises more on God , and there is no recognition of the self or its goal is to recognise that the individual Self does not exist or is non existent and all there exists is God .

@Azal Abadi On the surface there may seem to be a difference, but actually as a person who appreciates both tradition, I think they are different ways of expressing the same Reality. Both tradition provides us a way to transcend the suffering of the world around us. Many new scholars also hold this veiw, like swami vivekananda, Sri aurobindo, David Fawley.
