In terms of a complete character arc, you're right that Tywin is closest to Walter White, because of one key similarity: Ego. For all of Walter's "did it for my family" it's pretty clear he's pursuing his goals to try and reclaim some pride in his life. The key demonstration of this being when he refuses Eliott's offer to cover his medical treatment, mainly because he would find it humiliating to accept such charity. Tywin is very similarly driven, and also similarly all about the family on the surface, except when you drill down into it it's about his personal feelings, in particular the humiliation he absorbed by proxy thanks to his father's weakness. Was ordering the death of Elia and her children a ruthless political act to cement his position in the new order, or was it an act of spite because the Targaryens spurned his marriage offer? Tywin will insist on the former, but as we see in his bedchamber his personal desires play a lot more in his actions than he'd ever admit. That said I like the idea of JonCon having the most overtly Walt-like arc incited by a terminal diagnosis. The one thing that's missing to make him truly Walt-like is how personal is this for him? It's definitely personal in part, his failure at Stoney Sept cost him a lot, but is that the failure that drives him, or is it his love for Rhaegar? How much is Jon deluded when he says he does these terrible things for his family? The Winds may give a clearer answer, but for the time being I'd hazard those motivations are more sincerely held than Walt's were.
@nont18411Ай бұрын
Tywin is an extremely spiteful person. I find it really hypocritical from the fans for praising Tywin’s actions as “necessary evil” while condemning Cersei for doing the same thing just because she’s a woman.
@3nnikАй бұрын
Tywin's relationship with his father kind of reminds me of Walt's relationship with his son, both are in someway an embarassment to the characters, with Tywin's father being weak, and Walt's son being disabled and not being able to live up to Walt's idea of a perfect son. Although I'm sure that Walter definitely loved his son, there is a sense of embarassment that Walt Jr inflicts on Walter, similar to Tytos being an embarassment to Tywin.
@RmsOceanicАй бұрын
@@3nnik Walter also had a traumatic experience with his own father, who suffered from Huntingdon's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative condition. The person who Walt believes should have been a role model for being a "real" man was instead an invalid stuck in bed. Weak, one could say. Very different to Tytos and yet a very similar complex inadvertently bestowed on the next generation.

@@thing_under_the_stairs To be honest, I didn't even think about the deaths caused by meth. Is pure meth healthier than the meth that was being sold before Walter? If you think about it from that perspective, Walter might've saved lives lol. But the plane crash killed like 200 people. Robert's rebellion had to have a death count of atleast over 100k and TWOFK, which is technically still ongoing has an even bigger death count. There's also the custom of northern lords executing prisoners themselves, so it might be that Ned killed more people with his own hands than Walt ever killed as collateral, excluding the meth deaths. P.S I don't actually hold Ned responsible for the wars, but he was a key player in both of them and his (and other people's) actions led to them igniting.

Euron, Victarion, even Balon with his treatment of his son, Walder Frey, Tywin, the Mountain, Cersei, Roose and Ramsay are all order of magnitude worse than WW in my opinion. Also I dont consider WW to be the worse character in Breaking Bad, even without including Jacks gang. Tuco and Hector Salamanca, as well as the cousins, Don Eladio and the cartel in general ... Even Gus Fring is worse in my opinion (uses children in his meth empire, causes as many if not more deaths than WW, and is about to murder WWs entire family, including his infant daughter, because he killed some child-murdering dealers ...)

I would say there are a lot of very obviously more evil than Walter White characters in Westeros. Just several people who just do evil for evils sake. Walter, while undeniably evil, can 'justify' his actions. That doesn't make them NOT evil but he there is some restraint and practicality to it. Walter is closest I think to Tywin, both evil but what really mean is ruthless. They will stop at nothing to get their goal. But if you give them what they want, they'll just stop. Again that still makes them evil, but there are people who are worse. First to mind (but not the only one) is Ramsey Snow, if you gave him everything he wanted, made him king of the world, he would still beat and torture innocent people just for the lolz. And again he is not the only one. What I think GRRM means is character, who falls into the 'power corrupts' brand of evil. Character who learns that if they give up their moral code and embraces the dark side of the force, they will be more powerful than they ever imagined.

To me, Tywin Lannister is much more like Gus Fring, pragmatic but led by honor and legacy, and in turn, revenge. Maybe surprisingly, Walter White resembles Stannis the most. Both are driven by righteousness, the knowledge of having better skills than their more succesful rivals and the justification of morally wrong deeds through pragmatism. If Stannis has a dying speech in the books like in the show, I wouldn't be surprised if he admitted his honor and duty was in part a coping mechanism for feeling unjustly passed over by Robert and disrespected by Renly. EDIT: just got to the John Connington part, and yes, it fits like a sleeve.
