Roth...I'm 48. TV and entertainment consumption has changed so much in my lifetime. When I was little there were 5 channels and they went off air overnight. There was literally nothing on for hours every night. We got our first vcr when I was 7 but it was years before there was content available to rent or own. Cable started being prevalent in my early teens. That was amazing! So many channels and 24/7. The next big change was the internet. It's taken years but now streaming seems to be how most people watch stuff. I don't have tv in the traditional sense anymore. No cable. I have hulu, netflix and cbs all access (cbs will be dropped soon, just had it for Trek and I didn't even like it). I watch a lot of KZbin as well. One of the most interesting changes to me is that I can watch content that is all focused on my interests. I watch a couple hours per day of what I call news and all of it is about comic book/genre movies and tv. In the old days I would've had to watch a show that also talked about things I'm not interested in, like Kardashians. A coworker asked if I'd watched a Netflix show we'd talked about and I said "no, I've been binging a GOT reactor on KZbin. " It's a brave new world, lol.

much the same, but from an Irish context. Grew up as a 70s kid with a wooden TV - remember those? - and a dizzying five channels. Three British, two Irish. Oooooooh. Flash forward, and tv viewing has fractured completely - TV is something your parents watch, but the rest of us flit around digital content, like browsing bats. I can’t remember the last Year I sat down for, say, an hour in front of TV - instead, I’m consuming content mostly on my iPad, binge watching a series here, following KZbin clicks there. Content diversity has exploded - but that goes beyond the big players’ offerings, as although I’m on Netflix, for me, it’s hugely underwhelming as the randomness but global accessibility of KZbin, carefully filtered, is impossible to beat. And, as a massive gamer, I’m probably the same as the vast majority of gamers on any platform who remain stubbornly, completely disinterested in our consoles being ‘a multimedia platform’, which Microsoft so spectacularly fudged in the past. Ultimately, yes, some of these current giants will die, as the model for media consumption has already changed, and I don’t see audiences following the traditional viewing models ever again. It’s a long, long way from five channel land, and tuning stations by twiddling matchsticks inside small tuning dials... ;-)

I'm in my mid-40s, so of a relatively similar experience, but I think we need to be cautious. As I read what you said about having to sit through other things to get to another thing, I was reminded that that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes that exposed me (at least) to other information, other news, other entertainment. It's a bit like being able to eat only your very favourite things, but then not being aware either (a) of what's out there, or (b) of what that extremely limited diet is doing to you, particularly in terms of narrowing your perspective and/or changing you fundamentally. This is something we ALL have to be worried about: tunnelvision, in various forms -- informational, educational, intellectual, moral, ethical, etc., etc. We've all seen by now people radically changed by networks or Facebook or whatnot. We've seen how false information can be spread so easily through such cloistered environments. This is something we all have to worry about. We - all of us -- should have started worrying about years ago, but didn't. I'm not by any means saying there are concrete answers to this, but it's scary as all hell.

I'm from Germany and things are a bit different here. Amazon has a movie selection that is way better than what Netflix has to offer. Usually Netflix movies are at least two years old when they hit the service, Amazon is much more recent. They also have some shows under the brand of "Amazon Exclusives" here for which they own the distribution rights in Germany (like "Fear the Walking Dead", "The Path", "Mr. Robot"). Although that is true for Netflix as well, but they brand those shows as Netflix Originals here (like "Star Trek: Discovery", "Designated Survivor" or "Better Call Saul"). But Amazon has some great originals. "Sneaky Pete" honestly was my favorite show of 2017.

Edmund Blackadder it's owned by all the major studios, so it's not going anywhere, based on its recognition, it's their side project to keep the cord cutters in their pocket. It'll probably fall apart when each studio wants to make their own streaming service. But for all our sakes, Hulu shouldn't or needs to be around. Otherwise you'll needs like 10 different streaming services, and that will get pretty pricey and 10ish dollars a pop.
@Daaaanielle6 жыл бұрын
I find that fact that it's owned by every studio a huge weakness. The second they decide to just split everything up and have their own platforms is the second people have to pick where to put their money. Disney has a huge edge because they own most of the actual properties now (If the fox thing goes on then even more) and they have the families with kids in the bag as well. If people have to chose and have to spend tons, they will easily turn to illegal streaming and as much money as the studios have to back those platforms up, they won't be able to keep them forever if they only bleed money right?

Hulu can't expand due to the ownership of the company when Disney is majority ownership they will change that
@SimonWakefieldUK6 жыл бұрын
The no international presence is actually a strength. Netflix problem right now is that despite their crowing about international numbers those numbers are actually really weak, especially if the estimates are right and about 40% of their international come from the UK and Canada. So netflix is spending vast amount for content in each country but they can't get a foothold in most of these countries. In addition the content is cheaper for Hulu, even their originals because the production companies they use for the content know they can sell it elsewhere. So Netflix have to pay way more than the production budget for their content where as Hulu are only paying a fraction of the content

She used to ask us to play her things on TV, but that is rare now. We are still cable subscribers, and still love it, though neither of us watch TV enough anymore to really justify having it. I watch KZbin when I'm not busy at work and on lunch breaks, so I'm really into the clips that Roth mentioned (like the monologues). I think the studios have adapted their talk show materials well, especially Fallon since his show is built around bits. At the same time, movies are getting longer and longer and are still making tons of money. I honestly think there's room for long-form entertainment despite the very short-form growing dominant. I think it's the middle-length material that will suffer. Like, some day I'll watch 3-10 minute episodes of "shows" or 3 hour movies, but won't have the patience for 30 min or hour long shows.

Netflix is the least likely service to be bought, because of their 80 billion dollars debt load in commitment to future projects. @gilbertoflores73976 жыл бұрын
Marcus I hate how Netflix is throwing that much money at the most ridiculous of things. Paying comedians 60+ million for 1 or 2 specials, and millions on producers before even paying for the shows themselves and production. Netflix is seriously screwing themselves over with how they're hemorrhaging money for things that shouldn't be that expensive. Not long ago, producers who go to them of their own free will to pitch a show wanting to work for them. Not a good move for them to go to the "talent" themselves. Dave Chappelle is a good example, he got a crazy amount of money upfront, and being honest, he kind of half-assed what he delivered to them. Like he didn't care too much about what he made for them. His first specials were old ones he had already recorded and just gave to them. Then his last one was written and performed within a matter of weeks from when he released it, why it's too topical. It seems like he put very little effort into it because his paycheck was secured. Ryan Murphy and Shanda Rimes might make a bunch a crappie shows because their paycheck is secure and don't need to have great ideas for shows anymore.

Okay, so Hulu is $8 a month, Netflix is about $10 a month, and Amazon is free with Prime. That's not too pricey, so not sure if there's much of a war going on, especially because they offer exclusive shows that are all mostly high quality. It's like how people think Marvel and DC are competing when really they're not.
@islandsurvivor7766 жыл бұрын
But soon Disney comes along and who knows what else and you can't really pay for or watch stuff from 8 different streaming services
@Axterix136 жыл бұрын
Hulu has commercials in their stuff at $8 a month, and who wants that? So it'll be $12. Amazon might be free with Prime, but that's also a bit of a drawback. That Prime fee has to make it profitable for Amazon to not charge for shipping and such as well. There's a reason why Amazon already has the add-on channels, and you can expect even more of that. Netflix does have its originals, but it is trying to appeal to a lot of people. How long can that last in the face of more targeted programming? I have to wonder if things will switch to more cable like situation, where they focus on a target audience. You see that already with Disney... family and kids programming. What happens if someone comes along that focuses on sci-fi/fantasy? If you like that sort of programming, are you going to subscribe to Netflix for the occasional sci-fi show, or for the channel that focuses on it? Heck, Amazon is sort of doing that with its add-ons. How about an ESPN streaming service that tries to corner the sports market, including snagging lots of sports related movies? And then how long before we get streaming packages? Especially if net neutrality doesn't return...
@gilbertoflores73976 жыл бұрын
Axterix13 that's the big problem, too much companies are trying to start their own streaming services. The main reason people want streaming is because cable gets to being too much, and now companies are going to make you pay just as much as you were before. I have Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, VRV, and get HBO when Game of Thrones starts up. I pay what I would pay when I had cable. I don't like all these different streaming providers. It's a good thing I'm not into sports. Lol. My wallet would be hurting.
@Axterix136 жыл бұрын
I can't see not happening, though. I mean, the study already mentions how the different streaming services are watched for different reasons. Right there, there's incentive to play to your core demographic. But then just look at the exclusive content. Netflix spends a ton, but how much of it does the typical person watch? I've got little interest in a lot of it. And there are limits to their money, as can be seen by other things I used to watch disappearing from the service. Admittedly, this is part of why they want to make programming, so they own it and can keep it in perpetuity, but even there, you see more niche shows, like Sense8 being cut, as the return on investment isn't there. It is a more specialized show on a service that has a broad audience. So how long can Netflix live with their current rates? How long before they up it? Do what Amazon does and have the add-ons? Amazon obviously had to do it sooner because Prime isn't just for streaming stuff. And if it goes that route, as opposed to a few big streaming services and a bunch more smaller, niche ones, then we're still in a cable-like situation. Just one where Netflix is Comcast instead of HBO. On top of that, we're also seeing things like internet or phone service that includes a subscription service. Which is also paving the way for a situation like how cable is. The internet provides are the new cable companies. Well, in a lot of cases, the old cable companies are the internet provides, but whatever. The old school, nickel and dime the consumer for various channels thing just seems like something that will rear its ugly head again in the future.

The paying for content is a hard one. I grew up watching anime (when people still traded fansubs on VHS tapes). So, I have been around for getting free content on VHS tape, burned CD/DVDs, torrenting, illegal streaming, and legal streaming. So, I can say I have consumed a vast amount of content for free over the years. When Crunchyroll went legal I was all aboard. Streaming was by far the easiest way to get the content I wanted and I was personally happy to pay for. But on the other hand I have a lot of other anime watching friends who are around my age (30s) and they still won't pay for anime. Or because anime streaming is now split between several services it is easier for them to just use an illegal streaming site that has everything. So, I think services will have to get the content people want in the easiest way possible. I do think orginal content is the right way to go, that is what is keeping me with them (and others I know). But there is no real way to know how everything will shake out in the future.

One thing you forgot to mention is the live streaming cable alternatives. Cable is on the decline, everyone is cancelling it, or "cutting the cord" and moving to streaming services. Offerings like Sling TV, Playstation Vue, Hulu Live, and DirectTV Now are taking over in the live tv market (I have Playstation Vue and I love it). You mentioned that you think hulu will be the first to die, but I think that's it's offerings of network tv shows, originals, and packaging that with the ability to stream live cable channels will be enough to keep it alive for a very long time.

I’ll turn 30 in May. A snapshot of yesteryear is my pre-teen years were populated with VHS and thru high school Blockbuster was my main outlet outside of the theater to get a movie. Nowadays I use KZbin and since college ie 2007-2012 have bounced between my family’s Netflix account and friends. Up ’till a few weeks ago I used Redbox over that bc there’s no quality guarantee there. I’ll do everything else before I’ll be plugged back into Network television thru a cable provider; cable providers are generally imo predatory bullies at the local level (I had a marketing gig selling Direct TV which 🤮). What I watch generally speaking is selective KZbin (a longer list than I realized haha - mostly entertainment news including movie & TV reviewers, political think tank orgs/things that aren’t network TV derived politics as well as movie & TV video essay makers), Netflix which after Jessica Jones I binged ♥️ as much original-ish as licensed stuff and last but not least I have Movie Pass so theater-going has made a comeback (I did note y’alls heads up and don’t use it at the local arthouse theater).

I think the deciding factor will be this: How many of these services are you going to buy? I'd pay for one or two of them, but everyone has limits; either financial limits or just the limits of practicality and convenience. This was a thing back when everyone watched TV on actual televisions. At first, it was just TV. Then there was cable, which was a lot more content for a little more money. Then HBO was only a little more for even more cash, but they sold themselves on quality over quantity. And then it was dozens of cable packages and hundreds of pay-to-view channels... And then TV died, because no one service managed to corner enough of the market, and all the pieces of the once-whole package just fell apart. Next, Netflix was setting up to be the next TV, where you could find practically everything... but they couldn't get HBO licenses, so that's still a thing. Now, Hulu and Amazon have their own chunks of content. The more options there are, the more people are going to have to prioritize the services that give the most/best content for their buck, just like before. That's why I think Amazon will win. They're the megacorp with the bucks to buy all the rights, but unlike Netflix and Disney, they don't create content; only distribute. Any company making their own content will prioritize that, whereas Amazon is just going to buy everything they can get their hands on. Sure, HBO and Netflix lead in quality which is how they've survived, but neither of them has dominated the market. I feel like sheer volume of options for your dollar is what's going to make the difference in the long run. The smartest thing Amazon could do would be to buy out Netflix or HBO - or both - before Disney does. This also works a lot better for content creators. Like it is with games, most companies would rather develop a game for as many systems as they can, to get the most out of the market - except with TV, you don't have to reformat your show for each channel. Game of Thrones is great if you have HBO, but if you don't... it's still great - and free! - because people pirate the crap out of private content. If HBO sold non-exclusive licences to Netflix and Amazon, they'd make a LOT more money.

Actually in the past 5 years or so there has been a return to longer form content. With services like Spotify, people “binge listen” music and entire albums are starting to become more popular again. Also, as a youth I would like to point out that if I watch gaming content it will be the length of a movie at least. I have watched KZbin videos that are 5 hours long (critical role for example) and I think longer content will become more popular. Specifically, an episode of a tv show isn’t one unified thing, the season is. “Have you seen setranger things season two?” Not “have you seen the stranger things season two premier?” I enjoy hearing your perspective and please continue making good content

as a Youth in the 18-24 range it's interesting u brought up that stat that young adults spend most of their time watching online videos even tho we were still young enough to grow up watching vhs tapes ? and now that i think about it i dont watch any tv whatsoever, i watch youtube vids from content creators (also smth to think abt a good chunk of users watch 'let's players' here), but considering the adpocalypse i think it will inevitably drive a lot of the small content creators, which a majority of youtube's userbase watches, off the platform.

This is a great video with great points. Globalization is a must now not a hope, that's why Amazon Prime went Global with the launch of Grand Tour two years ago it had to be done. Services that don't exist Globally that end up being just US stuff are really ruined internationally. I'm Canadian, Star Trek Discovery, Handmaid's Tale etc were either on standard cable TV or bought up by Netflix, so new pop up services that don't launch Global are doomed. The idea of KZbin/bite sized content changing things is a very important point as well. I know for me, a dude in his 30s, the duration of a season and number of seasons have defined whether I'll watch something. A 22 episode season for me is simply a no go. I'm a DC fan and the idea of attempting to watch a CW Superhero show is exhausting and I won't do it. (To be fair I'm not big on the CW soap opera-y voice that permeates there shows) Hell I'd like to see the Netflix Marvel shows all drop from 13 to 10 episodes. The end result of this might be that in the future the TV shows that have become the haven for stories that formerly were mid-price films become to cumbersome at 6-8 hours and a resurgence of those stories told in a 2-3 hour movie (likely released exclusively to stream) may happen. That said it's also likely that we just get 2-3 hour seasons of shows like many show in the UK have had for years. The point of a generation growing up with free entertainment then having to deal with paying for stuff however gotta say isn't new. Television was free to air before cable existed, hell radio still is & has been for nearly 100 years but people still pay for satellite radio, people buy bottled water even if they have good taps. It doesn't matter if you were raised on free content if the stuff you have to pay for appears better or has more, people will pay. Like I can't watch stuff that's as polished as say Stranger Things, Altered Carbon, Mudbound etc on KZbin. Sure most of the stuff I watch is here, but if I want something a fair stretch more 'prestigious' gonna have to pay a pittance of $10 to see it. The issue here is making sure that the content remains a pittance to purchase.

Grand Tour was not 2 years ago but just over 1 and it didnt make amazon prime a house name what so ever outside the US.. the only thing it did was that fans of the the old top gear to now download and alternatively stream the new GT content as they see fit.

OohzyJohnDow Okay so I got the time mixed up because they're on the second series. No one. There is more than enough movie and TV content out there for 3 major streaming services to share. Now, is there enough content for all the 100 plus streaming services we either have now and will have in the next year or two? No, at some point, the smaller ones like CBS All Access may start to decline and be done with, but Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Instant Video are here to stay.

I enjoy the combination of my streaming services Netflix and HBO with KZbin, espescially your channel and channels like New Rockstars and ScreenPrism, who does wonderful analysis of shows. I don't think youth is loving bite-sized, I think they love deepdiving into great content. I think there is a love for the craft in shows like GOT, Handmaids tale and Westworld, the level of detail and care they are made with, where you watch the show, dive into the youtube rabbithole and return to the show and see all of these new layers. And then maybe a video of puppies, cause their the best !
@mhmnorris6 жыл бұрын
It's not just little kids deriving a large portion of the viewing habits from KZbin. I am 32 and do ALL of my video entertainment online, with about 75% of that being KZbin content ranging from scripted shows to debate shows to documentaries to Screen Junkies and other movie news, there is such a wide array of good content that it would be impossible to not find something you enjoy watching regularly, and let's not fool ourselves either, half of it is better than what you get on paid services where 99% of the content the average viewer isn't going to watch anyway. The other 25% of video entertainment comes from streaming shows and movies I want to see on whichever streaming site has them. All of this is when I am not gaming of course, which is the bulk of my digital entertainment, but the fact remains I haven't had need for a TV for the purpose of watching TV in over a decade. It is cheaper, more manageable as everything I need is one place which also means no need for a thousand remotes, and most importantly I never miss a thing I want to see, granted I might not be seeing it the hour it comes on but to be honest I was most likely busy anyway.

I also use patreon for channels that use that - I prefer to pay a bit more and not have to worry about 3rd parties and advertising and directly support my content creators. However, I understand that it’s a luxury not everyone can afford. I don’t subscribe to CBS, Hulu, HBO Go, or have cable. I have KZbin Red, Netflix, and Amazon. I could see how if someone DOES use these other services, KZbin Red would fall to the bottom of the priority list. However, like the others in my 18-24 demo, I watch KZbin far more than I stream television or movies.

I also got the tv show X-Men: The Animated Series Volume 1 from the library. I also watch a shit ton of KZbin. And I listen to a lot of free podcasts on my ipad like Undisclosed, Truth and Justice, Myths and Legends, and Fictional. Here are some other movies I got from the library: A Hijacking, Personal Shopper, The Imposter, Here Comes The Boom, Chasing Ice, The House I Live In, Rock of Ages, Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, Like Someone in Love, and Berberian Sound Studio.

I live in both worlds. I call the landline, my "spambox" and the television, my "white noise machine". Primarily I watch movies and multiple episode series, on my desk top through Amazon Prime, Netflix and Crunchyroll. I am guessing, at least within my subscriptions, Crunchyroll will be the first to go if I take on Disney streaming. I watch KZbin on every piece of tech that I own (except the television). While I am excited for the new streaming services, no way can I afford to leap over the multiple pay walls that Disney (aka Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilm and ??Fox??) will be erecting next year.

So ... Where does a service like VUDU or iTunes fit in (Amazon too), which allows you to rent or “own” movies and TV shows? Right now I’m loving being able to view new movies like Disney’s “CoCo” and WB’s “Justice League” in the comfort of my home just 3 months (or less) after their theatrical premiers. And, frankly, I would rather rent a classic Western off VUDU, like “Stagecoach”, than view many of the Netflix originals. It’s the ultimate in personalized entertainment, and I would hate to see that go away!

I still don't get the deal with HBO, when the new season of GoT started I looked into it and couldn't figure it out, I think the situation is different in Canada, either HBO Go isn't available or the other one isn't, or something, like I said, I didn't understand it.
@jabzt6 жыл бұрын
Alexander Forbes if you pay for hbo through cable as a channel you pay extra for then you can use your cable log in info to sign in to HBO go so that u can watch on the go. HBO Now is just for if you wanted to pay for hbo directly as a streaming service for if you didn’t have cable. So the only difference between them is the way you pay for it whether it’s your cable bill or directly from your credit card
@alexanderforbes14526 жыл бұрын
That jogs my memory some about what I found out when I did my searching, HBO Now isn't available in Canada, and I don't have cable so I can't get HBO Go. I remember my findings was that I was shit out of luck.
@jabzt6 жыл бұрын
Alexander Forbes yeah just looked it up and saw hbo now is a US only thing. So if you’re interested in an hbo show outside the US without cable you have to either use a VPN to make it think you’re in the US or pirate it. Sucks for them cuz as they said in the video if you’re not a global service you’re missing out greatly on customers.
@alexanderforbes14526 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've considered a VPN but I figure if I'm going to do a work around I may as well just pirate it, shame, I would gladly pay them if they were willing to take my money without my having to go through a bunch of nonsense. That said, it's not exactly HBO's fault as Bell, who have their own streaming service, has some kind of deal that keeps HBO Now out of the country, it doesn't impede Netflix or Amazon for some reason though.

Haven’t watched the video but I don’t think amazon will ever die simply because they are a powerhouse of a company...I think they are better than Walmart and that’s not something easy to do being so young...so they don’t have to worry about spending money on their service
@gilbertoflores73976 жыл бұрын
Alan Martinez actually, amazon is a strange company, they aren't very profitable, at all. They might bust in the future. They are completely focused on brand recognition and not so much on making money. The company is expanding too much too fast, it might not end well for them. A very in treating thing is their Anime Strike division, they gave it up because it wasn't profitable.
@dewd44796 жыл бұрын
Gilberto Flores they are growing fast but they are doing it smart. They pump the money they make back into the company so that they can enter into tons of new markets. They also dont just branch off into things that that’re good at. Instead they find a market that they feel like they can do well in and then develop a strategy and structure specifically for that. Also their anime service was basically dissolved into prime video. Their thinking was probably why have two services when there could easily be one.
@gilbertoflores73976 жыл бұрын
Matthew Manning but haven't you heard of spreading yourself too thin. It's a huge factor, and they aren't investing in anime anymore, they merged what they have into prime because they still have the license for those shows.

@kingv13316 жыл бұрын
I think Amazon streaming is the weakest link. Everyone is talking about Amazon as a larger company, but we are only referring to the streaming service itself. The fact is that you have to pay extra for almost all of the better content. I think ultimately that is their biggest downfall. My Amazon barely gets used because when I check the content, the majority of the shows I want to watch cost extra. I'm already spending on prime for the free shipping, but I get free shipping from about everyone if I spend above a certain amount. So there is really no added value with the streaming. I think ultimately they will either have to go flat rate for all content or drop the service all together.
