The pulling forces on the rotating mass for that will put lots of stress on the motor bearings, shaft and additional rotating items unless a counterweight is added.

Noise reduction is important for military/police applications but for commercial drones I think the biggest issue is not noise but security which no one seems to be bothering to address. Especially if you are delivering expensive items.

Actually this prop has the center of thrust WAY offset from the motor shaft, and will chew up motor bearing rather quickly. What makes it quieter is simply changing the single frequency of a propeller with identically spaced blades, into two very different frequencies ... one significantly higher and likely outside hearing range, and the other significantly lower and better attenuated by the environment. The enclosure also allows for sound management much better than free air props. I wish anyone the best that tries to run a delivery business with these props, as the motor failures will be horribly expensive, and leave drones and/or product littered across the service area.

In order to make the propellers silent, you must reduce the wake or turbulence caused by the propellers, a standard blade’s endtips produce a lot of wake, a toroidal propeller eliminates the need for an end tip, meaning that the wake is basically removed, but as we see in the new era of formula one cars, the rear wing appears to have no end plates, which reduces wake, and also reduce downforce efficiency, to the contrary, the 2017-2021 formula one cares had more boxy and turbulence causing rear wings, they were consistently more efficient and made the cars quicker, similarly, having an endplate on the end tip of a propeller is enough to not only reduce the wake but also give the propellers more lift, which yes still makes them more noisy, but making smooth ridges that go parallel with the airflow on the wing is enough to clean up the airflow enough to give a balance between having optimal efficiency and not being a noisy inconvenience, and some noise is generally good, because this is enough to alert us with them.

There was once a time when passing commercial planes would be deafening to anyone on the ground. Nowadays, while planes are far from silent, you can easily continue a conversation (even where i live next to an airport) I'm looking forward to seeing how these delivery drones progress. Will they have to have traffic-type systems once there are hundreds in the same airspace? Will illicit goods become more easily delivered by blending in? What unforeseen problems will we find?

Nice, but my main concern is when they'll be available fpr the drones I fly. Dji mini series, neo, etc. People are unnecessarily crazy about drones, thinking they are being spied on. Not being noticed is important to me.

You forgot to mention the most important advantage of the asymmetrical design of the Zipline propellers, which is the reduced drag when not in use while the drone is moving fast in forward direction with the rear propeller and wings only.

@@physicsinphysis Thanks, now I can understand your question. There are two different type of propellers for both lateral and vertical trust on this drone. The zipline propellers are used to lift the drone up an fly vertically and horizontaly at low speed, for higher speed they stop moving and reduce drag due to their aerodynamic shape, for higher speeds the uplift is generated by little wings and the rear propeller only.

I wonder if it's possible to improve unequal zipline propeller by connecting the propeller tips like in toroidal design. If ring shape of toroidal design eliminates turbulance caused by air flowing over the tip like in traditional propeller it might do the same also in zipline.

for DIY drone builders there's already people reverse engineering blades them on youtube but it's a lot of trial and error, if not printed precisely as intended it will blow itself up.

It is a safety provision, if one propeller stops working the fifth propeller acts as a substitute, but if all are working fine it works as a speed booster pushing the back air

assuming enough thrust headroom, any torque imbalance can be compensated for using software, with potentially a small loss in overall ability and performance depending on the situation

The Gluhareff backpack copter had a counterweight like that too, I'm not sure that was a sound reduction in that application, as The rotor was spun by a blade-tip mounted "Gluhareff Pressure Jet". This jet engine uses a combination of peculiar behaviors of: Super-heated/super high-pressure propane released just over the intake horn by a jet nozzle at super sonic velocity, air entrailment/induction, acoustic resonance tuning/resonance compression, The Little known property of superheated propane to be very attracted to metal surfaces like steel or aluminum when they are glowing red hot. Why the design probably didn't help? 😢The engine is on the outmost tip of the rotating rotor - so your ears don't have to worry about those pesky prop-tip vortices on this bad boy when the concept of a tip - jet mounted engine inevitably results in the engine noise projected 360° around blurringly fast for all to enjoy!!! And not just the consistent rpm whine of a jet or growl of an internal combustion engine ... No, that is not enough. Nay, I tell you - why bother with exhaust tones of predictability or consistency, or even the annoying screech of the pulse jet - you shall receive the glory of the rip in time and auditory space that is formed when a small cross-section of trans Sonic superheated and badly combusted exhaust enters ambient atmosphere with no exhaust shaping or nozzle. "The Rotisserie of Auditory Assault" AKA "The Decibel Dagger" I saw one at a Miramar Air show many many moons ago. The experimental helicopter section, one that had become affectionately been dubbed "Darwin Alley" by anyone who would see the kind of things people were trying to sling themselves and air with... That motor was the not the LOUDEST thing I have ever been exposed to. THAT thing produced arguably the LOUDEST engine or contraption per ounce I have ever heard, including ordinance. With a warbling inconsistent screach that Will flame out for a microsecond and then of course do a rich burn detonation when all the fresh charge reaches the chamber igniter spark - hell hath no fury like nature taking back a vacuum... But don't worry, even when the exhaust isn't pointed at you for the 280° or so, with the added value the intake nozzle sonic boom per ounce I have ever heard in my entire life

I'm more worried about children and animals woth those propellers. They have a higher hearing range than adults do and quite frankly I fond constantly barking dogs and screaming kids far more annoying that drone buzzing.

At the same time, Russian bandits and some collaborationists instigated by the former FSB agent and terrorist Strelkov took over Lugansk and Donetsk regions. In the process, they tortured and murdered everyone who opposed them. At that time, the infamous Russian phrase отправить на подвал (send to a basement) was born. Needless to say, the “elections” organised there can’t be called fair and democratic in any way. I recommend reading some articles from “Guardian” if you want to know more. Long story short: It’s all Russia’s fault. Back to the topic: such drones could indeed be helpful for a more stealthier approach. At least some experimentation is worth trying. Maybe it turns out right now that speed is more important than stealth. Who knows.
