Remember, though, with Marie Kondo you are supposed to let each person sort their own stuff. 🤣😂🤣
@trexyecart5 жыл бұрын
Marie Kondo isn't against sentimental stuff. In fact, she leaves it for the last category because she knows how hard that is for people. Her motto, as you said yourself, is "If it brings you joy, keep it." If those shoes bring you joy, she'd say to keep them, not throw them away. Retract that finger.
@mikemcconeghy46588 ай бұрын
"Retract that finger" cracked me up. I hope it catches on.
@shywolf46 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong but I don't think you are supposed to Kon Mari other people's stuff for them. I think Penn and the kids would be asked to sort through their own clothes and decide what sparks joy if Marie Kondo was there. Lol.
@stephaniedraper44646 жыл бұрын
Legit. Also you’re supposed to hold each item to determine if it brings joy, not just look at it. This was hard for me as a mom to grasp (and also as a wife of a sentimental hoarder!), but I’ve been able to help everyone move forward more easily and found more peace for myself by being respectful of the kids choices. We have discussions about some items, but not as many. Also one of her episodes of Tidying Up really addresses this. I can’t remember which but it’s an episode of a family of 4 that downsized to an LA apartment.
@KristinGlasbergen6 жыл бұрын
That’s what I was thinking too. Marie doesn’t specify what people should keep and discard, that’s up to each individual person to decide.
@FocusingOnChrist6 жыл бұрын
Marie says specifically in the book to NOT go through any ones things but your own.

Having that many shoes depicts disposable income.....if I could afford it, I might have a ton of shoes! Although, I think I would find others things like electronics or vehicles to spend excess cash on. If you want it and can afford it, but it and enjoy! You only live once!
@Skittl13216 жыл бұрын
Agree. Everyone is responsible for their own things. It isn't about throwing things away. It's about intentionally selecting what things you should keep. And you can only do that for your own things.

When we took over the house, that I grew up in, we literally had the same Grill! That looks like a Weber and it is a good Grill! That same Grill hung around for about a year in my backyard and we didn't use it because we got a propane grill. I finally convinced my husband to throw it away. Now years later we rediscovered how much we like the taste of charcoal grilled stuff. I've never had the opportunity to buy another Weber and all the other grills we have bought they rust and fall apart!

Winter/rain boots, one sandals, one runners, a couple crocs, uggs, and a couple pairs of casual shoes, keds and loafers, one dressy (black), and a pair of really cool handmade leather shoes from the renaissance faire. That’s about it. I’ve never cared about shoes much. I admit I LOVE Sorels, but I live in Southern California so I have a strict one pair policy.☹️

Yes! When I walk into the garage I see a rack of my husband’s shoes by the doormat. When I walk into the laundry room, there is yet another rack of my husband’s shoes. When I open our closet door, more of his shoes (which is ok in the closet). On his side of the bedroom all around his chest of drawers... about 8-10 more pairs of shoes!!! I think there are some in the basement, too. Oh yeah, his waders & snow boots are down there. He wears a size 13. His shoes need to start paying rent. They use A LOT of square footage!😂😂😂😂

I really enjoy watching your channel. I love Penn's surprised expressions when Kim does something unexpected. Kim, I am with you. If my home is organized and I get rid of clutter, I get rid of my anxiety!!! With that being said, I have issues with sentimental things like my son's very first outfit he wore home, my dog's first outfit, my dad's things. I finally threw away my dad's 25 different games he used to play alone. He passed away 6 years ago and I still can't throw his glasses and pants away. I need to let go of some of that because the memories are more important than material things. I loved this video. Thank You

omg I haven't own that many pairs of shoes in my entire life & I am 38! lmao I currently own maybe 5 pairs that get me through the entire year. Penn has more shoes than my entire household currently has hahaha This was hilarious to watch. I am NOT into Marie Kondo at all, if I had to get rid of the things in my house that didn't bring me joy then it would be empty. However I do go through the closets 2 x a year and remove anything too small or we haven't wore in the last 6mos to a year. We donate it all to Big Brother Big Sister. I tend to do it in the Spring around my kids birthdays (April) & again in Nov or Dec because they usually get new clothes for Christmas.
@stephaniedraper44646 жыл бұрын
She does have you express gratitude for the things you have to keep for practical purposes, but that don’t bring you joy. You should maybe get something that brings you joy though.

This is so awesome. I've been all about getting rid of things for the past 6 months. This is so funny. I also read the tidy up book and when she said to take all your photos out of albums and only keep a few - 5 from every trip I think - she lost me. I am not a fan. I am a fan of do you have space and is it of service or does it bring you joy? I finally let go of clothes I've had since high school and haven't worn since high school. And I should note that I haven't been in high school for a very long time. Thanks for making me laugh and keeping me feeling good about letting go of stuff.

"Storage" is only for family heirlooms, and things used at least twice a year or more. If you are storing things, you are hoarding. I have less than 10 pairs of shoes total. A third are winter, a third are daily, a third are dressy.

That was my husband's childhood, so having stuff really stresses him out. Too much to pack up and move. But it also meant that the furniture we got when we moved into our house (13 years ago) was hand-me downs and semi-disposable...and we still have it. Trashed sofas and beaver-vomit bedroom sets do NOT spark joy. I think I finally have him accepting that we're here until the end, so we are slowly replacing furniture and getting things we really like, or at least getting rid of the things we hate. And after we recently had to pack up everything to replace our carpets, I'm seeing his point about "stuff" and I am decluttering everything!
@missnaomi6134 жыл бұрын
There's a strong hoarding tendency in my family, and I have it. So, I go through my stuff regularly and say goodbye to unneeded stuff. I also had my kids do the same, since they were little. They know what they've outgrown! I'm pretty sure one of my grown-up kids still does this.

Before you get rid of that grill, you need to visit BBQPitBoys.com . There are basically two kinds of clutter. "Memory Clutter" and "I might need it someday clutter". You have to be willing to ruthlessly get rid of both. I head both of you say that you were keeping something because of a memory and/or because you might need it some day. Full Disclosure: My house looks like it should be on an episode of "Hoarders".
