Who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls? Why were they forgotten?
During his recent visit to Israel, President Barack Obama began his itinerary with a viewing of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Officials took this occasion to underscore the continuity from biblical times to the present exemplified by these most ancient of biblical scrolls. Of course, examination of the Dead Sea Scrolls and of the ways they have been understood in ancient and in modern times afford evidence not only of continuity but also of dispute and disagreement. In her Israel Studies Lecture, "Who Wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls and Why Were They Forgotten," Rachel Elior offers an overview of the provenance of the scrolls and her assessment of their significance in both ancient Judaism and modern scholarship.
Rachel Elior is John and Golda Cohen Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Jewish Mystical Thought at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Israel Studies Professor for Spring Quarter 2013 at the University of Chicago Divinity School. She is teaching a course at UChicago, "Major Issues in the Study of Jewish Mysticism: Between Kabbalah and Hasidism." Professor Elior is the fourth visiting faculty member at the Divinity School's Religion and Culture in the Twenty-first Century: Perspectives from Israel program, made possible through the generous support of the Israel Studies Project of the Jewish Federation of Chicago.

What a joy to finally hear a Jewish scholar interpret the evidence independently and re-discover our Priests. It is so amazing and comforting to see the same letters and words in the Isaiah scroll written a thousand years before the Leningrad, Allepo, Stuttgart, etc. codices for oneself at the Israeli DSS digital website. Now everyone should be busy correcting their texts and websites that the Essenes wrote these works, since they were copied from even more ancient texts several hundreds of years before the so called Essene sect at Qumran.

This women said there was no mention of the Essenes in the Renewed Covenant (a.k.a. "New Testament") which is a lie. Messiah mentioned them in Mathew Chaptger 5, She said there is no word for Essene in Hebrew, another lie. Essene comes from the word Ebion in Hebrew and it is the word meaning "poor", Eusibius in his work the panarion states that the Essenes where the ones who laid there possesions at the feet of the apostles and followed them living in communal covenant and voluntarily giveing up all they had to share with others who entered into the communal covenant. As an educated women im sure that she is quite aware of what she is doing and has probably been bought off like most the other Dead Sea Scroll scholars by the catholic church. I would highly recomend Robert Eaismans book, "the dead sea scrolls and the first christians which has tons of evidence that the Qumran community was most comprised of Zadikite priests and Essenes. I read, or at least skimmed, all the books at the library on the DDS and one of them said that when the scrolls were first found, someone took them around Jerusalem and no one was interested, but one person said they had come from the basement of an ancient Palestine church. Makes you wonder. I know they test the material the scrolls are written on and the jars they were stored in for origins and have found some anomalies.

Her dating of Daniel at 164BC as mentioned around the 38:30 is a huge error. Much to late of a date. We know from the 70 weeks (of years) prophecy of Daniel given by Gabriel (Daniel 9:20)that began after the decree to rebuild Jerusalem and the walls was given in 457 BC by Artaxerxes and set the clock ticking on the time when Messiah would arrive and was fulfilled exactly by Jesus Christ.

Persuasive, passionate, informed presentation and interpretation. I am not ready yet to settle on any existing theory but Professor Elior's theory is teneable. I don't hear her denying the existence of the Essenes or even denying that the Essenes or a group that we've come to know as the Essenes lived at Qumram. I am heading towards a synthesis, that is that the Zokak scrolls mingled with new scrolls by the Essenes who may have been allies. That Qumram may have served multiple functions at different times. Even as a military outpost or watch tower! Perhaps the Zokok priests even lived at Qumram for residencies so to speak which may have served as a scriptorium among other functions. But, really, the core of her theory is that the scrolls addressed the Zakok priests concerns. I'm not there yet but I respect her theory.

I believe I heard professor Elior say several times that the word Essene does not exist in the Hebrew at all. She affirmed that only the three witnesses Pliny, Josephus and Philo wrote about the Essenes. The Essenes as authors of the DSS is a fact that remains dubitable to her. She never endorsed the Essenes as writers of the DSS. Finally she ended her presentation by saying that each time one wants to suggest a review of the origin of the DSS, one is met with resentment by other scholars. I perceive that a group of powerful people want to dominate the minds of the people with the falsehood of the Essenes as authors of the DSS which clearly is from the sons of Zadok and their allies. I choose to believe that as long as there is no linguistic connection of the Essenes to the Hebrew language, there can be no way I will accept them as kinsmen in matters of the Divine Aaronite priesthood. In another study I discovered that the Essenes were Egyptian occultists and the sources cited by professor Elior were all occultists. Shalom Aleichem.

She said that the scrolls make no reference to the essenes, but does not identify their authors, presuming they were Jewish scribes of an unknown sect. We have to understand that the Essenes was a Gentile word referring to the virtue of a holy sect, this sect called themselves The Poor which is written 56 times in the Scrolls. The Poor also means Ebionite. Later church father tried to accuse that sect as heresy, but the truth, as to why she says they are not mentioned at all

As Proof Elior stated many times the one thing the jews were always good at was arguing. Sounds like the modern day Messanic and Hebrew Roots groups. Why is it hard to believe that the Essenes which is a gentile designation, like the Nazoreans and the Ebioites and the Essenes were all expressions of a righteous remnant full of Messanic fevor because they believed their own covenant. It is not unlike us today with our many groups all anxiously awaiting His return.
@KevinPaul444
@KevinPaul444 7 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to one thing - terminology errors and misunderstandings. The Hebrews were very big on creative metaphors and parables which is where you say a word that has two different meanings in the context that people would think you are speaking about a specific meaning, but you are really speaking about the other meaning, or hidden meaning. It was a way to earning knowledge, because you had to earn the favor of God, which comes by good deeds and not just believing. Doesn't matter the designation as we are all trying to find the same group, for me I have no doubt from conclusive evidence that a Nazarene is an Essene, and is also a first Christian. The covenant of the sect goes back from when they left Jerusalem generations before John the Baptizer. By the time the Christ came on the scene, there was a different doctrine, and different teachings in the gospel. The first gospel was not called Q or a name like John. Josephus, Paul, and Luke called the New Testament, the Book of Life. Well everything those people did was to create a mockery of the Christ, like the Talmud but all made hidden. The first and only gospel was called: The Gospel of the Holy Twelve: The Perfect Life.
@KevinPaul444
@KevinPaul444 7 жыл бұрын
And if you can please listen closely. If you do a search for that document you will find a translated Aramaic version which has controversy over it, but if you dig in you can easily tell it is disinformation because there are two stories. I have two important things to say: The gospel was forged by Greek hands. Meaning that by that early time it was written it had already reached the Gentile world powers and corrupted, so just because it is a valid Aramaic document it does not mean it is "the real thing." We do not have the real thing or close. I believe the controversy was because it did escape the Vatican vaults. This document was written Before the book of Acts.

The lecture says at least twice, like at 1 hour 12 to 14 minutes in, that the line of Tsadok had been the priests of Jerusalem for 1000 years. I think this means the Sadduccees because she says they got a bad rap in the NT. But is the lecturer's claim true? I thought that the Sadduccees took over Temple rule because the Greek or Roman rulers favored the Sadduccee faction in 300 BC or later.

@@angelhart7775 Sadduccees in Hebrew is Tzadokim, the plural of Tsadok. It implies something like "The Tsadoks". So it sounds like in 1000 BC or something, the line of Tsadok was running the temple, and then under the Greeks or Romans, the foreign rulers favored the "Tsadoks". But this is a bit confusing, as to how the line of Tsadok got split between Tsadoks and Pharisees, or if the Tsadok line was the Tsadoks and the Pharisees became a new faction unrelated to the Tsadok priesthood. Wouldn’t it make sense that the Rabbinical Judaism “Jews” (the converted Yiddish speaking people who converted to Jewish culture originally from the Russian Steppe), would do away with any books that would reveal the curse to be brought upon them if indeed they were from the Japheth lineage and were encroaching upon the of land given to Seth as an inheritance. The divisions of the lands according to Noah to his sons carried a curse for overtaking land not part of their inheritance. Japheth despised his inheritance as his inheritance contained cold countries. These details of divisions and corresponding curse are found in the book of Jubilees. The Ethiopic Orthodox Church have always consider the Book of Jubilees as canon and refer to it as “The Book of Divisions” , the Abyssinian Church also, and they call it “The Book of the Division of Days”...as in how the land was divided by Noah in the days of Peleg.

Yehoshua of Nazareth fulfilled the Melchizedek Priesthood from Samuel. Samuel did not descend from Aaron's lineage but was a Levite from the lineage of Korah. So I'm suspicious as to why the Qumran community would label those who kept a solar-lunar calendar as being a wicked priesthood. Didn't Aaron's two sons die due to offering strange fire to YHVH and also the two sons of Eli the High Priest die for defiling the priesthood? Samuel was raised up in their stead to be a faithful priest after the Order of Melchizedek. The Sons of Zadok who kept a solar only calendar are the the Saduccees of the New Testament who were also in an alliance with Rome, and this should give one pause.

Daniel and several other young men (1:4) were deported from Judah to Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar. Ezekiel 28:3 Mentions Daniel and Jesus refers to Daniel as a prophet in Matthew 24:15 and Mark 13:14. The prophecy was sealed in Daniel as Gabriel had instructed, but now the 70 weeks of years that point to Messiah Yeshua can clearly be seen. Daniel 9:20-27

If Zacharias (priest after the order of Asia) and Elisabeth (of the daughters of Aaron) were Essenes AND priests, yet we’re told Essenes were celibate, wouldn’t that be problematic for explaining the birth of John the Baptist? (Luke 1:5-25) I cannot help but conclude that the Levitical and Aaronic priests were a different sect entirely from the Essene sect. They clearly married and had children, whereas the Essenes did not.

Well spoken--righteousness is indeed RIGHTEOUSNESS, and yet Israel must say that GOD'S LOVE & MERCY E N D U R E S F O R E V E R . We humans have but buggers hiding in our nostrils --- what value are we? Ah, whay value is "buried treasure". (The current speaker has obviously accumulated great "treasure"; when she dies it will be "buried", so let's view it now!) In the Habakkuk PESHER, surely Eisenman is correct in saying it refers to the Roman brutes, for they worshipped their own war standards, which the Greeks did not. If that were not so, Germanicus would not have gone back to retrieve them from the Cherusci tribes of Germany in the Teutoberg Forest there.

Too many people bundle the Essenes community/Coptic writings (in Ein Gedi on west banks of Dead Sea) with the Qumran community in the northern area of the Dead Sea (Jordan River/plains area). The logical question to me that no one is asking is, “Where did the Temple Priests go when they were exiled from the temple and replaced by the Pharisees and Sadducees?” That lineage would have included John the Baptist who had both parents of priestly bloodlines. He should’ve been ministering in the temple, but instead we find him ministering in the wilderness (desert) near the Jordan. Clearly the original priests were exiled and replaced, and they took the temple writings with them to preserve the Word of God. There are approximately 25+ miles between Qumran and Ein Gedi. That’s an 8 hour commute! We think in present day that’s close, but on foot, this is a day’s journey. The Essenes lived in Ein Gedi, and that’s where their respective library (Nag Hammadi which is more Coptic/gnostic/mystical in nature) was found. Whereas the priestly library with its more Biblical Torah and prophet writings were found in their respective area in Qumran near Jordan. Both are very different types of writings. “Essene” is an Egyptian word if memory doesn’t fail me. The temple in Ein Gedi that was found has mosaic reliefs that are more Phoenician in nature, with symbols of a peacock, and other symbols that are more closely aligned to Freemasonry than to biblical Israel and their priests. They had different calendars from each other as well. These two groups are starkly different from each other. The only thing remotely close is their geography and hiding their writings in caves, probably because of the ongoing conflicts in their regions. It’s refreshing to see a scholar who is willing to reconsider the narrative, and to ask the tough questions, scrutinizing finer details and nuances with an objective and discerning eye. Thank you.

Those dead sea scrolls found lately which mentioned the existence of the Lord Jesus have long been despised by the people in those times particularly those in the religious hierarchy as it posed a threat to their long-established beliefs in the first place; hence, they have to move heaven and earth to destroy it and sink into oblivion altogether. Praise the Lord that almost the entire holy scriptures were well preserved, safely kept, and hidden in a cave during the annihilation of the early Christians.

That would be _nuance._ The more a person knows about the answer to a simple question the more complicated they can make that question look. This ability to tease complications out of what first look like simplicities is strongly correlated to human intelligence. The ability to recognise this trait is in others is also directly connectable to human intelligence, so that looks quite bad for you sad to say. Also I am pretty sure appreciation of nuance is not a catholic trait, it is not a religious trait of any variety or kind.

The answer is exceptionally easy as to whom penned the DSS; the mystery is revealed in the Book of Acts. Luke and Acts were written to Mattathias ben Theophilus (recorded simply as "Theophilus" -- just as Yosef ben Caiaphas was referenced as "Caiaphas"). Theophilus was the kohen gadol (=chief priest) in Jerusalem in 65-66 CE at the start of the First Jewish-Roman War that lasted from 66-73 CE. Luke was explicitly written in chronological order taken from eyewitness accounts; see Luke 1:1-4 concentrating on v3. The "sect" was called THE WAY (Heb. HaDerech); Josephus, a self-described Pharisee (and we know what Christ thought of them in The Eight Woes recorded in Matthew 23) coined the derogatory term "Essenes" (=pious ones). These "wise men from the east" of Jerusalem -- 15 miles as the crow flies -- in the desert wilderness of Qumran had resided there for nearly a century before Christ's conception on the Feast of New Oil in 5 CE and His birth on the Feast of Weeks in 6 CE. Yes, I have confirmed what the "star of Bet Lechem" was with our local planetarium. Yochanan (John), who was a Levite, went to study there; see Luke 1:80. Recall that he was "the voice crying out in the (desert) wilderness." The Feast of Weeks is when The Way made new covenants; Yehoshu'a (Joshua, falsely called "Jesus" from the Latin transliteration -- NOT translation -- of His name) ushered in the ultimate New Covenant with His birth. The Congregation, or men and women of The Way, lived in Damascus, Syria, where there is a "street called Straight" to this very day. They would dedicate their first-born males to the Lord and send them to Qumran to study. Where was Sha'ul (Saul) going to persecute the men and women of The Way under direct orders of the Great Sanhedrin? It's all right there in Acts, folks! You just have to open your eyes and quit listening to "Biblical scholars" and their false machinations. Of those in Qumran, the last vestige of them were discovered at Masada according to research via the Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS). Scribal remnants were crossed matched at both locations (tinyurl.com/n3zt9ch). So, how does The Way factor into prophesy? They are the 144,000 of Revelation! What other Jewish males in that number were chaste? The DSS clearly state that those in Qumran were. This "sect" separated themselves from the corruption being practiced in Jerusalem, and they lasted for just under two centuries. The generation that existed in the time of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection certainly witnessed the destruction of the Second Temple. Modern day Israel/Jerusalem certainly follow the Babylonian mysteries. They place more faith in the Talmud Bavli (Babylonian Talmud) than they do in the TaNaKh; they follow a Babylonian calendar in which the fourth month is named after the Babylonian deity Tammuz (tinyurl.com/qgl6wg4); and they recite "Adonai" for the Tetragrammaton, which is a reference to the Greek Adonis and the Babylonian Tammuz. They are "Mystery Babylon" from Revelation, and Jerusalem will certainly be destroyed! After the new Heaven and Earth are created, New Jerusalem, the bride of Christ, will descend from Heaven! So be it (amen)... Shema Yisrael! (Hear, Israel!)

The Way in Acts So, where is the "sect" called The Way (Heb. HaDerech) mentioned explicitly in Acts? * Acts 9:1-31 * Acts 19:8-10, 23-27 * Acts 22:1-16 * Acts 24:1-16 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+9%3A1-31%3B+19%3A8-10%2C23-27%3B+22%3A1-16%3B+24%3A1-16&version=NASB The following bears repeating from the words of Paul the Apostle: Acts 24:14 But this I admit to you, that according to [T]he Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers, believing everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets;15 having a hope in God, which these men cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked. (NASB) Recall that (Titus Flavius) Josephus (né Yosef ben Matityahu) -- a Jewish historian, Roman citizen, and self-described Pharisee -- applied the term "Essenes" (=pious ones) to this "sect." He even had a spurious claim of living among those in Qumran before deciding to practice pharisaism; however, his timeline does not mesh up (i.e., he lied on his résumé). The Dead Sea Scrolls mention "the way" repeatedly in significant manuscripts. The Damascus Document describes how the Congregation of men and women lived. They sold all their earthly possessions and donated the proceeds to the collective -- living a communal lifestyle. This is confirmed in Acts including some of the problems they encountered: * Acts 2:44-47 * Acts 4:32-37 * Acts 5:1-11 * Acts 6:1-6 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+2%3A44-47%3B+4%3A32-37%3B+5%3A1-11%3B+6%3A1-6&version=NASB John (Yochanan) was instructed in the desert wilderness of Qumran based on Luke 1:80: Luke 1:80 And the child continued to grow and to become strong in spirit, and he lived in the deserts until the day of his public appearance to Israel. (NASB) Do you think that John's parents -- whose father was a Levitical priest -- would allow their only son to roam aimlessly in the desert? How would he become "strong in spirit?" The Holy Spirit had not been sent yet! Like it or not, THIS was the early church... And, for the Catholic folks, Peter NEVER visited Rome, but as a Roman citizen, Paul definitely did! Again, that is documented in Acts et al. Shema Yisrael!

Theophilus literally means beloved. It was not a name given to humans until after Luke wrote addressing the church as beloved (we are considered the bride of Christ while Israel became the bride of God on the first Pentecost) and it became popular among the early church Christians to name their babies Theophilus.

Where did you get 99% matches from? Have you ever read any studies about DSS? The DSS canon is different from the rabbinic canon. 1. DSS contains several deuterocanonical books and one of which was preserved in Greek (Epistle of Jeremiah). 2. Several Aramaic copies of Enoch and Tobit were found. Both books refuted the rabbinic doubt on devil. 3. One scroll of Exodus in DSS was proto-Samaritan. 4. Two versions of Jeremiah were found. 5. No copies of Esther were found and Purim was not celebrated among Qumranites.

The Answer to this is the Ebionites were Essenes and there were many communities that Peter and Iaakov visited. Yeshua was giving what I called the Beatitudes to them because they had forsaken all to follow him. We want to justify our love of this world and it's trappings when clearly Yeshua identified himself as being one of these and clearly said love of this world is enmity with YHWH. The poor were the Ebionites an if this person doesn't know this then their a fraud. They have been written out of history and out of the bible by those who have established a "fraudulent" messiah with fraudulent teachings to lead many to lose their souls. Believe me, if she was saying anything that was against the establishment she would not be allowed to even speak. No doubt she must be a "Jewish" scholar.

Marty Girl Gary Wayne has done extensive research on the ancient pagan cults for his books and lectures. He states that the Essenes were a polytheistic sect of Judaism with pagan roots formed from many different mystery religions which incorporated Judaism as well. The content of the Dead Sea Scrolls does not reflect anything about the Essenes or their doctrines, and the location is "near" one of their communities which is the only tie to them. The caves are such that no one could have lived in them reflecting that they were only a hiding place...the Essenes had an entire community and had no need to hide their things in caves starting as early as 200 BCE. The entire Essenes connection is tenuous at best as is the idea of Jesus or John the Immerser being connected with them in any way. While choosing to be poor and helping others may be laudable, the fact is that Catholic nuns also do this and yet we don't claim that the Beatitudes is written specifically about them or any other particular sect. Jesus did sympathize with the poor as a broad category of people, and stated that there will always be poor people amongst us.

There is every reason to believe that John {a.k.a., the "Baptist"}, a man also mentioned in the writings of the turncoat historian Josephus, was a cousin f the pone we know as "Jesus" {A man I view as a Jewish PATRIOT, for he himself saiud one cannot serve TWP "masters" --- and who is you master, if not your lown GOVERNMENT? The only VALID CONCLUSION must be that Jesus himself HATED the Roman type of Government, where foreigners "Lorded it" over local Jews (Matthew 20:25-26/ also Mark 10:42 bear out this view of mine). It makes sense that a GOOD JEW like Jesus would HATE the polytheism (idol-worship) of the Romans, who had a habit of absorbing the various "gods" of regions they had conquered.Instead, Jesus wanted the MONOTHEISM of MOSES --- and this view is readily borne out my his many REFERENCES to the great LAW-GIVER, MOSES. That Jesus was a "kosher" (or "card carrying"JEW) is seen in the way he said "Pray that your flight NOT BE ON THE SABBATH" (i.e., so as not to violate the keeping of the Sabbath, Matthew 24:20). I pray you will come to the correct con c;lusipon and agree with me, for I am the son of a Lutheran pastor, who, after many years of biblical studies, have come to understand the TRUE JESUS --- a JEWISH PATRIOT, one dead-set on confounding the superstitious Roman authorities, who constantly violated Hebrew sensitivities / Jewish LAWS (which Jesus always praised as an "index of righteousness" --- for the real law he wanted was in the human HEART, Jeremiah 4:4, Psalm 44:20-21, & Matthew 5:18). Jeus was your BROTHER (Mark 3, last verse). Furthurmore, Jesus never raised his friend Lazarus "from the dead". Rather, poor Lazarus suffered from a severe case of MALARIAL FEVER --- and Jesus gave his the same medicine that knock out Jairus' daughter and placed her in a death-like state of C O M A --get it NOW, Reverend? (Compare Mark 5:39 with John 11:13, noting the complete;y opposite meaning of the word "ASLEEP" --- and EDITRORIAL INSERTION added by those aboriginal "Christians" (probably early Romans, not Jewish followers of Jesus, for John was authored almost 60 years after Mark --- ask and bible expert). Plus (I am generous!) this poignant passage from Matthew 12:40-41, where Jesus openly give but O N E S I G N to those who requested a sign, name;ly the "Sign of Jonah". Now ask yourself: WAS JONAH D E A D inside the "belly of the big fish"? Obviously NOT! And therefore you must also agree that Jesus ws N O T D E A D inside the "belly of the earth" (the TOMB, in his instructive little lesson). But here's what REALLY HAPPENED: Some patriotic, righteous Jews who loved Jesus and didn't want to see him die on a stinking, blood and shit-covered Roman CROSS, slipped him a "date rape" type drug on the cross --- rhe very SAME material that had placed both Jairus' daughter amd Lazarus too (he nearly died from the overdose --- and that's why Jesus DELAYED in returning to Bethany to check on him). Get it NOW, Reverend? Read Psalm 11 carefully and then tell me [with a straight face] that I can stand firm in the face of people MORE THAN THE HAIRS ON MY HEAD and CUT THEM ALL DOWN WITH A FEW BIBLE VERSES --- even tnhough they are all shooting arrows in the dark at me (PRINCES amiong them --- but I C U T T H E M O F F in the name of my GOD< Psalm 118:9, that happens to be ME --- if you can receive it. After all, how often is it that you get a chance to mess around with someone mentioned in the ancient PROPHECIES? What --- ME? (I'm no prophet! I'm just a truck driver, son of a bus driver --- my dad like to talk alot, too. Who would want to be a prophet ver a bunch of BLOOD HUNGRY JEWS, anmd a collction of HOT ROCKS? He's have to be MAD --- don't you suppose? And he's also have to preach about 1) wind, 2) LIES. amd 3) strong drinks, ha-ha. You know, "one drunk WITHOUT WINE"?
