10cc was a very unusual band. They didn't really have a "lead singer" as such, they traded off vocals on different songs much like The Beatles did. They were also studio producers and recording engineers before they were a band, and built two of the best recording studios in England. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme went on to become groundbreaking music video creators and artists. Check out their video for the Cry by Godley and Creme, the video is amazing.

Very true. while Godley/Creme and Stewart/Gouldman were the 2 main writing combinations, the 4 of them contributed in all sorts of combinations. I think that's why they produced such a wide range of music, as any listen to their greatest hits 72-78 testifies. Their albums are all well worth a listen, but for me they rate as one the great UK singles bands, along with the likes of Madness and Squeeze.

The message behind this song was hidden by the upbeat nature. It was inspired by the Attica prison riots in the US in 1972 which resulted in the police opening fire on the prisoners who were holding guards hostage. But it was random fire and as well as 30 prisoners dying, there was also about a dozen guards killed, only a couple by the prisoners and the rest by the police. It was a major event in US prison history and led to changes. How about trying " I'm Mandy, fly me" next. Another brilliant song disguising a bizarre subject. A plane crash and flight attendant saving a passenger from drowning but then disappearing presumed dead. A masterpiece.

And herein lies the reason why 10cc never had the international success they so richly deserved. Each member was an insanely talented vocalist / multi intstrumentalist and, because the band worked as a true co-operative, virtually every song had a different lead vocalist, (decided by the band members themselves in that who's vocals suited that particular song, regardless of who had written it), the instrumentation was also spread around the band members, rather than having a recognised lead guitarist for example. The result being there was no recognisable 10cc sound, as there was with their close contemporaries Queen, each single was completely different and, whilst they were all great tracks, there was nothing for audiences in the US, for example, to latch on to as they could with Queen or the Rolling Stones, where each member had their own role within the group. Whilst 10cc had a lot of success here in the UK and Europe, building on their breakout hit "I'm Not In Love" in the US and other parts of the world, proved problematical. Shame really!, sometimes talent alone simply isn't enough.

There's a lot of comments here - but I thought I'd mention something cool about that guitar solo. It's not an amp setting per se - he used a standard Marshall stack. Instead, Eric Stewart recorded it "double speed" - he slowed the tape down then played it with the backing track at half tempo, so that it would sound impossibly fast and an octave higher when played at regular speed. He then multi-tracked it. Eric was the owner of the studio they used - Strawberry - so they were able to do things like that without time constraints - like the massed overdubbed voices in "I'm Not In Love".

Graham Gouldman, perhaps the most underrated songwriter of his generation. Between 1965-67 he wrote probably the 3 biggest Yardbirds hits, Look through any window & Bus Stop for the Hollies, No Milk Today plus a couple others for Herman’s Hermits, Tallyman for Jeff Beck as well as UK charting hits for Wayne Fontana. That’s years before his wonderful career with 10cc. An under appreciated giant in the art form imo

Love Amber's reaction at 5:40, as the vocals resume immediately following the release of tension generated by the ascending bass line just beforehand. That tinkling piano over the bass from 5:03-5:14 is so reminiscent of the quiet passage in I'm Not In Love (1975), the one just before the whispers of "big boys don't cry" start up. Wonder if the boys realised they were sort of recycling it on the later recording? .

The studios was used by many artists often with the 10cc guys as producers. 10cc were the studio band for Neil Sedaka who made his music at Strawberry. It still exists but as a museum to it's glorious past. Best album has to be Deceptive Bends. Made in 1976 the first album with the new line up after Godley and Creme left the band it's just afull of clever songs but the best track is Feel the Benefit part 1,2 and 3 which like some early Queen songs roll into each other clocking in around 10 mins 30 secomds. I've always loved this song, especially the line "we all got balls 'n' brains/well my son's got balls 'n' chains." As a kid I had no idea what it meant, and it was edited out to make it radio friendly, as you heard just before the end, it skips to the last bit of the chorus. I think the full version only appears on the album.

I'm pretty sure that line is in the single it's just that radio and this Top of The Pops clip has it censored.

@@jeffcher10 You're dead right - I've still got my copy of the single somewhere, and the bits missing here are definitely on it Good ol' Auntie BBC being prissy again (but how did she miss the earlier mention of guys "ballin' in the street"??!). In fairness, though, it should be noted that Top Of The Pops often edited longer records for length as well as "non-family-friendly" lyrics - the max seemed to be 3.5 minutes. They did something like that the same year to Wizzard's See My Baby Jive.

I don't think the singer was referring to his son's genital arrangement! It should be heard as "some's" got b'n'b. 😉

I think on one European pop show of the time they do sing that line. I'm sure I've seen it on KZbin. Of course after the charts were published on Tuesday afternoon, and the acts were selected to appear on Top of the Pops, they were then supposed to record a version of their current single in a studio accompanied by a Musicians Union official. Perhaps this is the version they recorded for inclusion.

Number 1 in the UK for 5 or so weeks. 10cc introduced the 5/6 minute long Number One single to the UK in 1973/5 ... I'm Not In Love was another ... and then we saw Bohemian Rhapsody.

Jay, Amber I highly recommend the following to do: K.D. Lang - Constant Craving Edward Bear - Last Song, Fly Across The Sea, Close Your Eyes Ian Thomas - I'm Coming Home, Painted Ladies R Dean Taylor - Gotta' See Jane Wednesday - Teen Angel Most of these are from the 60's 70's but K.D. Lang is early 90's. I can literally make a list of great hits/artists

the song is about the attica state prison riot (NY) from 1971. one of, if not the deadliest prison uprising ever. the way they played it as an irreverent pop song was bloody brilliant.

Great one, guys! 10CC's first 4-5 albums are fabulous! Perhaps the best one might be their second one,Sheet Music. Their songs were lyrically either very deep or hysterical-sometimes both. And-- all four of them sang lead and wrote songs. Try Wall Street Shuffle,The Things We Do For Love,and/or Art For Art's Sake. But really, these albums are true gems. A quite funny fav of mine is Oh Effendi -last track on Sheet Music. Dive in! :-) T

It sounds as if the Beach Boys did a glam-rock record about a riot, which isn't totally outlandish considering the fact that the Beach Boys did a cover of "There's a riot going on." in the late 1960s. This glam sound was bigger in the UK than it was here, so it's no surprise that this barely charted in the USA, but hit the top 10 in the UK. 10cc had in interesting history, including ghost-recording for Kasenetz & Katz under the name "Ohio Express" (though most of the big Ohio Express hits were recorded by other people). After so many records that, at least on the surface, came off as light-hearted, "I'm not in love.", dark masterpiece that it was, must have been something of a shock.
