I was living in Finland the mid 70’s. Access to music was limited for me. I looked forward to going to the railroad station and buying the latest New Musical Express. I remember these guys were everywhere. I was from California. Maybe 22 years old and out traveling. Years later this song comes along and many years later I learn about the song, Brian, and think life goes full circle some time. And of course it’s a beautiful song. If you’ve ever played music putting it out there like that isn’t easy. Baring your sole. Brian really sticks his neck out it seems to me. The group really. Good stuff.

GE Smith, the house band leader for SNL gave an interview in which he recalled a story from this exact song. At the last moment before going live they could not find the percussionist. The person who plays that essential main beat that the songs opens with. Totally critical to the song! GE flagged over a friend who was a great drummer. Brian Ferry’s drummer jumped up and did the percussion part which he knew. The friend you see briefly in this video came in and did the simple drum part. Amazing performance. Incredible song.

After all the slogging in the 70's Roxy Music finally puts it all together and "arrives." You can see it on Bryan Ferry's face. The album cover is awesome; that helmet, the medieval specter. It was their last album I think. But Bryan F. wasn't done hypnotizing us with Avalon part 2: "More than this." You know, it amazing how rock n roll can get you hard and fast, or smooth and slow. When Roxy got inducted into the RRHOF and they played "Avalon" Brian Ferry got that same look on his face when that saxaphone part started. It was a secret smile that said "I know we're nailing it, we were Roxy Music, how many millions are gonna see this? Mission accomplished, better late than never. Congratulations Bryan, Phil, and Brian.

The look, of course, was so "sophisticated " when I was a youngster but now it is the quality of the voice, the diction etc. that makes me say, Yes, this is a true classic.

His facial expressions are a performance in themselves. There is something extremely artificial about them, which makes them hypnotic... I can't describe it better than that.

One of the greatest love songs from one of the greatest LPs of love songs. It brings back a lot of bittersweet memories of love and lovemaking and slow dancing. And it is sexy as all hell.

Great song, have I told you how awesome the 80's were lately? I've said it before and I will say it again "If you got to grow up in the 50's through the 80's YOU were blessed!"

From its first viewing via Mtv in the barren Midwestern U.S. in '82, I was hooked as a young teen. One of the greatest compositions of all time. ❤️
