To be honest, I actually hate The Very Loooooong Cave more than Poochy Ain't Stupid. Two things. How "Better" would Poochy Ain't Stupid be if the level was naturally auto-scrolling-less? Would it be bearable, but still bad? Also, the Impossible(?) Maze scores low from me just because of how the music choice doesn't compliment the place at all (being repetitive when the level would probably take like 15 minutes on the first runthrough), as well as how same-sy the place is.
@dmas77496 жыл бұрын
Probably would help a lot since the way it seems like the enemy is not one thing, but a combination of Poochy and the auto-scrolling. It seems like it'd be way too easy for him to move just a little too much or barely not enough and you end up falling on lava and dying. That kind of thing should not be in an auto-scroller.
@Taurmega6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can see that. Especially in a level with additional obstacles like this.
@quietone6104 жыл бұрын
WELL! Are YOU in luck! The speed-runner community figured out that the game STARTS auto-scrolling when the player touches certain areas of the map. In this level, it's the bottom of the first pillar. In every case (except 6-5), you can work your way around that spot.
@Drayiss6 жыл бұрын
At least the items exist, making the star points much more manageable, excluding during bosses (surprised you didn't bring it up, even in passing). Also, yeah, 6-5 is not only long and tedious, but paying close attention to the layout shows that the first section of the level actually loops in on itself. Those auto-scroll gods troll you so hard!

the issue the scoring system attempts to approach is allowing the difficulty of the game to be relatively low and giving skilled players another task to increase the difficulty of the level / open it up a little bit more. With no scoring system, the only feeling of achievement you'll be able to summon will come from completing difficult tasks, not barreling through a series of trivial levels - but making a game that difficult would turn away many younger or less skilled players, making the game less approachable. Some of the levels in Yoshi's Island are relatively hard, but ultimately the game is very easy on the whole unless you try to get 100%. Either you go for it all, or you settle for less, I don't think there's much of an inbetween if you want the game to be welcoming to players of differing skill.
@DarioPhantomPlays6 жыл бұрын
Yoshi’s New Island allowed you to keep whatever collectible total you completed, instead of having to do all three in one shot. But apparently, that game was SOOO bad... There's just something about a dog character named Poochy that makes people hate them and want them to die on the way back to their home planet. I never liked that scoring system either. Completing a level without taking a hit is okay. Completing a level while finding all the hidden trinkets is tough, but doable. Doing both and more in a level with auto-scrolling where you can't backtrack is just taking the piss, and those stars fade awfully fast when they're released. Maybe if levels provided more items than needed to reach the total it wouldn't be quite so bad. You'd still need to explore as much as possible.
@samlay95886 жыл бұрын
Not that I don't agree with your points about how it's terrible to do both things, the auto scrolling levels generally do give you more than enough star "?" clouds. I also totally agree that yes, the stars fade way too fast especially when they randomly scatter around like they do with enemies and an advancing wall of level.

The most recent Yoshi game somehow remedied this issue. You no longer need to get all the game's equal to Stars and Red Coins (Hearts and Stamps). You just need to get all the flowers to unlock the extra stage. Sure getting the stamps and the yarn to knit new Yoshis is nice and gives incentive for completion but if you just want to play all the stages you could just go for all flowers. In addition getting all the flowers from all worlds will unlock a super secret final stage that is similar to the stages like the Grandmaster Galaxy.

You would think _Endless World of Yoshis_ (the GBA-exclusive Secret #6) would be one of the legitimately worst because you have to drop down the same spike-laden shaft THREE TIMES to complete the level (grabbing all the keys). That being said, it may not be the absolute worst for those pursuing the Special 6000 Point Ending. (At least you get some good reward out of it, unlike the 5000 Point ending in Yoshi's Island DS, where they just said: "Perfect! 5000 points!" and not give you a cutscene to commemorate that.)
@GamingReinvented6 жыл бұрын
If you don't like the extra levels in the original Yoshi's Island, all I can say is that you'll really hate the secret ones from the GBA port and basically everything not on the main story path in Yoshi's Island DS. Endless World of Yoshis is absolutely ridiculous (and has some insanely unfair filler if you want to collect 100% of the items in the stage), whereas stages like A Light in the Dark and Yoshi's Island Easter Eggs in the DS title are borderline Kaizo monstrosities that seem like more of an exercise in screwing over the player than anything else. But yeah, Poochy Ain't Stupid is a lie, and that stage can definitely go to hell. Thanks for showing the glitch there too!
@SoulEssence6 жыл бұрын
I like Yoshi's Island DS's system much more. There are two bonus levels with new colored Yoshis: White and Black, which you don't see in the game elsewhere. You get Black Yoshi's stages (one per each world) by beating the game. They'll automatically be there after you beat Bowser (BTW, I'd recommend Baby Peach's level in the last stage if you having trouble). White Yoshi's stages are unlocked as soon as you get 800 points per world -- since there are 8 levels a world, this would normally mean beating them 100%, but with Black Yoshi's level, all you need is a good score. Personally, World 3 White Yoshi and World 4 Black Yoshi (if memory serves...) are my favorites, but they're all very unique and worthwhile!! World 1 White Yoshi makes very clever use of all the characters! Btw, did anyone else who played Yoshi's Island DS really wish you could have Baby Luigi on Yoshi's back after you beat it? I kinda wonder what his ability woulda been, or if he was originally gonna be unlockable but the concept was scrapped.

I can think of a level from Yoshi's Island DS that is even more evil if you're trying to 100% it. The Extra Level in World 1 you get for just finishing the game. There are literally just enough stars in that level to finish with 100% as long as you don't get hit. And they're all in clouds, no middle rings and auto-scroll vertical style with lava chasing you up the tower. Yeah you can get to the very end and die or just even get hit and have to do the whole level over again starting without eggs.
@therandombats25794 жыл бұрын
02:20 Funny you mentioned that because I recent saw on Zero Punctuation that Yahtzee Crowshaw said there's something unreasonable about the scoring system. 9:46 Hey, hey! You forgot something of that level! In the final part, there are some logs where you should pound DURING auto scroll, and yes, those have the last red coins of the levels. And if you don't get them down in time, you're screwed, teh auto scroll pushes you to the end of the level. Maybe yoy can think "well, no problem, I suicide and restart from the last save point". Well, NOT, there's no way to kill you at the end of the level, you can't go back, and in this game there's no time, so, the only way is restart ALL THE FREAKING LEVEL WITH THAT SLOW AUTO SCROLL, and if you fail again, you must do it again, and wait that cave, and collect everything again.

The one thing I hated in the very looooooong cave is that part where you have to perfectly time your jump on and off a chomp-bolder rolling over lava to reach a certain door. One slip-up and you're dead, and this moment comes quite late in the level, so you have to replay all the other crap (very slowly thanks to the auto-scrolling) to get back to it. I do remember this level being a bit frustrating, and you do bring up a good point about the collectibles. However, as I kid, I played this game with the Nintendo Power player's guide constantly by my side, so the difficulty of having to actually search for all that crap never even crossed my mind. Still, I found the collectibles here a lot more tolerable than in 3D platformers later on, especially games like Banjo-Kazooie and its 100 notes that need to be collected on a single playthrough. Shit like that's just tedious even with a guide, and that's not even touching on Donkey Kong 64 (widely seen as one of the worst offenders for collectathons done wrong).

I've always hated the Arkham games for the Riddler side quests. Yeah, you don't have to them all, but it never feels like you've completed the story in the game until you've found all of the trophies and defeated Riddler. It's really bad in Arkham City when he's taken hostages and you have an encounter with him in the main story where you have to rescue a hostage. Also, in Arkham Knight where you actually fight him and then mid-boss-battle he stops the fight and refuses to continue fighting until you've found all of his trophies. At least his defeats were satisfying in City and Knight, in Asylum he just gets captured off-screen.

The level kicked your ass almost the whole time but you fully healed near the end? You win. You only got hit once but it was at the end? You fail. Poochy Ain't Stupid & The Very Long Cave are so bad it seems like they're the two levels everyone complains about. Rarely are the worst levels in a game so agreed upon.

Wow. You basically point out the general problems with Bonus Mission 3 in Battalion Wars 1. Here you go for reference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6S2XqtqiaZshcU Thankfully, you do NOT need perfect ranks to unlock it--just an 85% average for Campaign 3, which believe me isn't going to be that hard unless you bomb on X-Day. However, this doesn't make Bonus Mission 3 exempt from complaint. Dealing with an infinitely respawning Bomber for the clear majority of a mission is already miserable. Try doing it *_WITHOUT ANTI-AIR UNITS_* and believe that's a welcome challenge. I generally get the perfect scoring done on that mission by just exploiting the AI and doing a Heavy Tank solo in general. Oh, and perfect scoring doesn't provide any rewards at all either, just bragging rights. Anyway, I've been meaning to post a video about a BLE recommendation of mine that would be about a level from BW1 that I've been believing you'd be liking. Of course, yeah, it's an Escort Mission. Thing is, it's an Escort Mission _DONE WELL._ You can get well enough ahead of the escortees to snipe off the various threats applying pressure on their path, and if the whole thing proves too difficult, there's an exploit that lets you free useful units that are easier to control early and use them to make destroying the initial threats to your escortees easier. At some point soon, I should get to uploading about it, but I'm planning to accommodate it with a rant as usual. Just for reference, I would much prefer Titans of Tundra (where you have to take out _EIGHT_ Heavy Tanks with rejects and it's not like the Heavy Tanks are poorly supported), or Gunships of the Desert (designed with the Kishotenketsu principle in clear use for learning how to use the Gunship), but I think the Escort Mission would be more fitting for your channel. As for the ranking stuff, yeah, I complained just today how games could stand to reward exploration better, right here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npWwiKKBl6qnaNk So yeah, there has to be a fine balance between making sure things don't become tedious or hand-holding, and the game can't be completely cheesed by shallow gameplay. I particularly point this out when I'd want to have a ranking system in my own game that would get emphasized. I'd want to make sure the ranking system would avoid getting out of hand, but I wouldn't want to forego the hard punishment for ignoring it outright, or even the soft punishment for imperfect scoring. That's a case where I'd definitely want to get creative to make sure it doesn't encourage the crap out of overthinking.

I agree that this one horrible level. I got 100% on every level in this game, but I did it on the SNES Mini, so I took full advantage of save state, and I'm not ashamed to say it.

I remember this level from forever ago. I somehow got 100% on 1-1, yes, somehow, because I wasn't very good at games when I was like 7, and decided to perfect the rest of the world. Like I said, I wasn't that good so it actually took me quite a while. And THIS is what I get? Fuck that noise. I blamed my skill, or lack of rather, back then. But man, does this look not fun to play. I wouldn't call it one of the worst levels, as I'd play this over something like KH1 Monstro or fight KH2's Groundshaker (Pride Lands 2 boss, and I LOVE these games to death btw) but that doesn't excuse being a bad level.

This level would've been really fun if they didn't decide to add the god damn autoscrolling.

The bonus levels in Yoshi's Woolly World were much more fun and unique (especially with the awesome bonus level music), which made it worth 100%ing the game.

Yo Mario. I heard you like riding, so your Yoshi you're riding on is riding on a dog, so that you can be riding, while riding.

I wonder where a game such as Mischief Makers would fall on the completionist scale, since you pretty much only have to collect one gold gem per stage.
@whoisthisgit6 жыл бұрын
I did that when I rented the game, but only enough to see all of the ending. It would annoy the crap out of me now because it wouldn't be very challenging to find the gem, but if I missed it the first time, I'd be thinking, "Crap, I'll have to play that level I already beat again later" at the back of my mind.

I think that PAS would be much better if it wasn't an auto in the first place. The whole "You need Poochie" Mechanic isn't necessarily bad, as seen in some other levels.

All throughout watching this video, I kept thinking about how much I despise Sonic Adventure 2's ranking system. In Sonic Adventure DX, you had three missions to complete for each level as each character. Sure, some of the timed ones were hard, and basically required you to bypass all the goodies and go straight for the capsule, but once you complete them and get the emblems, that's it. Oh, and the chao races weren't too bad either, just time consuming. You unlocked Metal Sonic as a reward for getting all the emblems. With Sonic Adventure 2 on the other hand, Sega added a 3D remake of Green Hill Zone for getting all emblems. SA2 has FIVE missions per stage, and there are more chao races. Still, shouldn't be too hard, right? WRONG! SA2 introduced the ranking system to the franchise. And there are emblems you can only get by getting all A ranks on every mission. And many of the missions are brutal and the requirements to get that A rank are insane! I don't even know for sure what gives you a better rank, I'm guessing collect everything and do it fast as shit. Metal Harbor Mission 1 for example, I can never get more than a C. I think it has something to do with getting on the rocket faster, or getting the nigh-impossible to hit ring boxes on the boarding section. Ugh, and getting the 100 rings in Tails' levels, give me a break. Mission Street and Eternal Engine can go suck it.
@noahdavenport75926 жыл бұрын
I actually really like SA2's ranking system, myself. The thing is, it isn't based on time OR rings, but points. Assuming you've been paying even the slightest bit of attention I assume you've noticed the popups in the upper left corner (near the Rings and Score counters). Those are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to getting A ranks. And they pop up for doing various different things. For example, hopping from rail to rail on the stairs in City Escape, or, relevant to your example, grabbing the secret second lever on the rocket (did you really not know about that?) in Metal Harbor. It's technically possible to get the A rank without doing that, but it isn't easy. That's also why getting the golden beetles are important, since they give a ton of points as well. As far as the treasure hunting levels go it's really more about the time score than anything. Even though using hints reduces the point bonuses you get, it's way more than worth it if it means you can finish the level faster. This doesn't apply for stuff like the 100 rings and Find the Chao missions though, those are just time-based. Can't blame you in regards to the Tails levels though, those are pretty awful to play in general (I legit think the treasure hunting levels are waaaaaaaay better) and yes this post is two months old but i figure i may as well clarify, if nothing else for the sake of other folks who come across this

Liam from rayman origins and legends? They can count as good challengs, because the screen moves with the character. Another thing I forgot are areo ship levels that have things coming towards you. What i hate is how the screen doesn't move with you.
