As you can see the old guard is the F company Scots Guards. The band leading the old guard is The Band of the Scots Guards playing the march "The Glaswegian" composed by former music director Jimmy Howe of the Scots Guards. The new guard here is the Grenadier Guards the band supporting them to the Palace is The Band of the Welsh Guards playing the march "Colchester Castle" composed by Earl Brigham. At the end you will notice The Scots Guards band taking the new guard to St James Palace.

The ones there at the start are Scots Guard, the second to come in were Grenadiers, Grenadiers have a white plume on left of bearskin and evenly spaced buttons, Coldstream have red plumes on right of bearskin and paired buttons, Scots have no plume and sets of three buttons, Irish have Green plume on right of bearskin and sets of 4 buttons, Welsh have white-green-white plumes on left and sets of 5 buttons

I'd like to make clear the procedure of the Changing of the Guard: 1, Buckingham Palace detachment of the Old Guard arrives 2, St James's Palace detachment of the Old Guard arrives with Band 3, New Guard arrives from Wellington Barracks with Band 4, During the performances of the two bands the Sentries are changed (even during the ceremony all posts are guarded; the first men of the New Guard are brought to their posts and the last men of the Old Guard are brought to Buckingham Palace forecourt

Not that many year ago there used to be a Rule that any of these Guardsmen should be the same height, as you can see with a mix and the very much shorter soldiers it does not look anything like as formal and ‘correct’ as it used to be.

Its the whole show, if you waited and only got 15 minutes you would be a little pissed off, they do realise the tourist wait a long time, so they give them a good show, if you are lucky the band may sometime splay special tunes, like the great escape, star wars, etc as well as military tunes.

+Martin69362 Must agree with you at 0.59 as doing right turn looks down at the ground (Don't look down there's no money on the ground would be the reply from my old SSM) Also when returning to ranks after finishing dressing as does right turn waves all over the place 2.12. Those sort of movements would have incurred the wroth of my Squadron Sgt Major and speaking as an ex engineer whose bashed the square more than once

+kwh278 The engineers have Squadrons instead of company's. A squadron is broken down into troops which would be similar to a platoon. Hence 3 troops plus HQ will make up a Squadron hence Squadron Sgt Major usually a Warrant Officer Class 2.

Police keep the Queen's Peace. The Army guard the Queen and the Royal Household. Odd though it may sound only a Police Officer can clear a road to allow a military unit to march on that road. Worth watching clips of Windsor Castle Changing of the Guard and you'll see a Police Officer in front not as part of the military parade but establishing the right for them to march. British Law has its moments ...
