Dear Julie, We really enjoy your videos! I can see why Luke's ancestor invented the "sandwich" meal! No need to set a lot of silverware for a sandwich. He was a man way head of his time! :)

Coming from a nation (Sweden) which lives for a good fish course, I love those crescent shaped plates and use mine quite often. Not only for the bones but also for the skins of trout or other cold water fish that get stiff when prepared. Really, you wouldn’t want to dodge a pile of bones or skin on your dinner plate so setting the crescent plates is very routine. The younger ones use them for their breads, their cheeses or even to hold that special spoonful of lingonberries which we set out with almost every meal because lingonberries will go with everything !

Bless her heart, us Americans haven’t been taught all of these things. My momma used to set her table on Sundays with our fine china and forks and spoons. My dad and brother would just use one knife or fork and lick the rest just to aggravate her. She tried so hard. I, too, love a great decorated set table but I had all boys and no one was interested so I gave up. We have lost a great tradition even if it is one day a week. The USA has gotten lazy, in my opinion. Good Tidings, Julie. Thank you, Luke, for teaching her these new things.

More etiquette and beautiful tables please! Learning how to set a beautiful table is something good for everyone to know and hopefully enjoy. Whether it is set 100% in the “proper” English or American or other culture’s specifics, having a strong basic knowledge allows you to create all sorts of beautiful table settings and tablescapes! I believe creating a beautiful environment for a glorious meal or a modest Sandwich (see what I did there?😉😆😉) makes everything taste better. They say you eat with your eyes first, so I would love to see various table settings with any and all of your different china patterns and specialty pieces, for various occasions and number of courses! You can learn and teach us too! Personally, I would like to know more about all the specialty pieces and what they are used for... e.g. the larger crescent dish as a salad plate but if it were smaller it would be used as a bone plate... or all the different soup bowls and the appropriate soups for each, etc. It could be an entire series starting with the most basic and add on as you go! The possibilities are endless even beyond the place settings... from specialty serving pieces, napkin folds, centerpieces, to chair decor! Knowledge is power and having proper dining etiquette knowledge in your arsenal will have you prepared for any social or business dining situation! 🥰😍🥰

This was a chuckle. It’s one of those things if you grew up with the custom, you don’t think about it much, it’s just what you know, but if it’s not your culture I guess it’s confusing. But as I see it it’s ergonomical and practical. Napkin rings can be a nice and simple way of getting around the napkin presentation. Everyone has their favorites and mine is linnen table cloths *always* with a good quality felt liner underneath which makes all the difference as it eliminates the ”clink” especially at a table seated for many. I also prefer big nakins like was common at the turn of the kast century and before, not the small modern ones you often see these days that don’t cover much of your lap. Don’t like tables with flowers that obstruct a proper view of those across from you, keep them short or put them on a sideboard or mantlepiece. I always put dessert spoons at center top of the place, handle to the right. I’m not fussy at all. More problematic than all this is is when I see Americans who don’t know how to use silverware eat in public or socially in Europe. That always makes me feel a bit bad for them. Even seen women sit down and eat with their gloves on which is just… idk the words really 😂🤦🏻♀️. Table manners are important for social mobility/flexibility. All the eating at counters on high stools won’t do your children any favors in life. But good food (and wine) is more important than most of this. And having a relaxed and social meal together! ❤️🙏

Omg, this reminds me of when I took "etiquette lessons" as a teenager. In one we had to have a formal dinner with all the silverware. They brought little butterballs made with butter paddles, that evidently were put in the freezer to keep their shape. Well, unbeknownst to me they were not removed the freezerer soon enough. When I used my butter knife to try to slice a sliver of the butterball off, the whole (still frozen) butterball became a projectile and shot down the table and down the silk blouse of the matronly (very large-breasted) woman who was "evaluating" us. Everyone saw it. No one wanted to say anything - and was trying to keep their composure. Being teenagers it took everything in me/us not to burst out laughing. (We were all kicking each other under the table.) The women tried to pretend nothing happened and maintain her manners, so continued eating and chatting with us girls. We all tried to carry on as the butterball warmed and melted onto her blouse...and the oil stain on her blouse grew - and grew, making her look like a nursing mother. Manners can be hard! 🤣

@@jeannastephen283 Lol, thanks. As I said, the second it happened I wanted to burst out laughing, for about 3 seconds - but then, I saw my life flash before my eyes and spent the rest of the dinner quietly panicking to myself, wondering what tragedy would become of my life after the dinner - and when Mrs. Adair saw her blouse. (Everything is so extreme for most teens, lol.) At that time, I really thought my Father would be ashamed and my Mother would disown me if I "failed" my etiquette training - and it would be the end of the world....but here I am.

That was HILARIOUS! Thank you for sharing, and for clearing up a few things. I was brought up (also in the mid-West - St. Louis) -and my parents were antique dealers(!) with the understanding that the crescent shaped dish was a "bone plate" for fish and chicken remains. Hahahahaha. Guess I was surrounded by the Beverly Hillbillies? Since moving to New York some 40 years ago, I "learned me" a few things about entertaining and table settings and now consider myself the "king" of the table setting. I entertain frequently and pride myself on all the small details I create in my tablescapes. Wish I could attach some photos here to show you but it doesn't seem as though you can? Maybe you and Luke can run a contest (Free tour and overnight at Mapperton as the prize?) for your viewers who submit table setting photos? Luke could critique them and you can pick the winner based on who measures up to his lofty standards. :)

Lady Hinchingbrooke, I absolutely adore Mapperton, its history, heritage, traditions, culture. One of my life's pleasures is setting a beautiful table. I learned this art from my beloved Auntie Patricia, who would show me how to set it, then take it apart and say "Now Emily Ann, you do the same." Those lessons, along with I don't know how many instruction books plus paying attention to homes such as yours, as well as experts such as Alastair Bruce of Crionaich, have both taught and served me well. My passion is history, historic preservation (and therefore historic structures and sites), antiques, and all associated subjects including dinner and kitchen ware and table settings. My guests always enjoy coming over for a meal, not only for the company and the food but to see how I've set my table for that particular occasion. Even when I dine alone in a tray in my bedroom, it is set properly. Manor houses such as Mapperton serve as an inspiration. As a side note, isn't it amazing how some designs stand the test of time? White china plates with a simple gold rim are always appropriate. Your set, Madam, is absolutely exquisite. I have similar plates made in Japan (marked Nippon, which makes them date between 1891-1921), and when my parents married in 1968, they were given a set of china in almost the same exact design. Neither, however, have the cream soup bowls or crescent plates, with both have sadly gone out of style. White with gold trim china is timeless, and looks just as elegant and fresh now as it did over 100 years ago. Take care and always remember, history matters. Emily

It’s easy, Julie, just make sure you have the cutlery, china and glassware for each course, and work your way in from the outside. I do like to follow these basics, because that’s what most people know, but if they don’t, they will follow your lead, as the hostess. I like to write the list of courses on my kitchen whiteboard, it helps keep track while cooking, too - did I put the bread into warm, etc.? Also, the butter knife is the short, dull-bladed one, it goes on the individual bread plate, then a common butter serving knife on the butter dish. So, each person takes some butter with the butter serving knife, puts it on their bread plate, then only uses their own butter knife to butter their bread, not the common serving one. I think it’s easier to clear and crumb the table before the dessert/pudding, just leave dessert wine, if any, and water glasses and napkins (on laps), then bring in the cutlery, etc. for that course, which includes coffee service, too.

The only thing I have to look up is where red /white wines go in relation to each other. But the silverware is not too hard - sit down, pretend to reach for starter utensils, then main course, then dessert. I think the reason you are confused is that Luke changed the rules in mid-stream - he went from formal to casual.

That was such fun to see! When my parents used to set dinner for friends and family, at for example, Christmas! they used to do just like you, re the glasses have different ones for different wines! they had Hock glasses but it was the 60'S! We never had a specific salade plate like the lovely ones you have! We used to use I think a plate to the left, but then that would have been also been for the bread plate? I was then 6-7 years of age! I was wondering where the soup spoon was actually! I will say well done to you, as it must be so daunting when you have not had the formal upbringing! I just learnt from watching what Restaurants would have done back then plus watching my parents too! Your dinning room looks stunning! How lovely to have the history around you too!

This is the first video of yours I have watched. You are both utterly charming! And, I would just like to say that, he had me confused about the whole layout too, so you're not alone in that!

Julie you are truly joyous and relaxed. My friends believe I am a riot as at every meal I use my best china, glass wear and linen napkins which I iron and hand wash. My Husband loves that I do what my Mummy did for each meal as we are special. Love your dress it is beautiful.

the half moon shaped plates are for bones. Nowadays bones are rarely left in, so the plates have become obsolete and are sometimes used for salads.

Truly hysterical! I loved it! I had learned a lot of this growing up then married a Washingtonian who was totally clueless, so needless to say it was never used very much 😂

Oh no!!!! I remember learning how to set a table, but we never ate that many courses. I thought those smaller bowls with the handles on either side WERE the soup bowls. Hum…… glad my grandmothers aren’t around to see how much I’ve forgotten. You did great - just the napkin needed to be folded and you needed a separate bread plate.
