This time on American Viscountess, I visit Hinchingbrooke House in the east of England with my father-in-law, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and one of his sisters, Lady Kate Hunloke. Hinchingbrooke was the ancestral home of the Earls of Sandwich from 1627 until 1955, when the family moved to Mapperton House in Dorset. Now a school, the house has been transformed, but in this intensely emotional visit, I imagine how the house once was as she hears some of her father-in-laws childhood memories of living at Hinchingbrooke in the 1940s and early 1950s.

My Ancestors worked at Hinchingbrooke Castle Julie, one worked in the stables too, in the early 1800's and my 5th Great Grandmother mended shirts for the gentry as well lol. Also my Great Grandfather sold horses to another well known family, The Fitzwilliams when he lived in Huntingdon, Cambs in the early 1900's to the 30's.

Thank you Julie and all of the Montagus that have generously shared this amazing family history, and letting us peek into the historic family homes. Your family are sweet and have studied the histories of the homes, the people who previously lived there whether family or not, and their own family history too. And thank you Julie and Luke, for bringing this ancient history to our computers and other devices so that it isn’t lost to the sands of time. I know you all work extremely hard at all of the various KZbin channels. And none of you are above rolling up your sleeves and doing the hard work of maintaining and repairing Mapperton and it’s many structures and features. You’re all doing an amazing job!

Once Julie is done her dissertation, I would love to see a video, or more appropriately a series of videos, tracing Alberta's life from her beginnings, perhaps visiting the places where she went/lived, on through when she married and move to Hinchingbrook, what she did during her time there, what her impressions were when she first saw Hinchingbrook, how she took to her new life and responsibilities, etc. I think it would be really interesting to hear about Alberta from Julie's perspective, but also to hear from the people who knew her as children.

@@mytobytobster I don't recall the exact name of her course of study, but it's something like Manor House Studies, and her dissertation is about a former Countess of Sandwich (the title Julie will someday inherit) named Alberta, who was an American from Chicago who married into the British Aristocracy and became the Countess of Sandwich when she married Julie's husband Luke's ancestor (great grandfather?). Julie is particularly interested in Alberta, because she is also from a suburb of Chicago, married into the British Aristocracy, and will eventually be a Countess of Sandwich herself, which is pretty neat. :) I hope I remember all that right lol.

I have lived in my house for over 67 years, and sitting watching this, my own memories have come flooding back, memories that I had not realised were still there. Looking around the room, I can "see" family Christmas gatherings, my mum sat in her favourite chair by the fire, and looking out of the window I can "see" the rose garden that my grandpa planted in the 1920s. Thank you for sharing your memories, which have allowed my own memories to surface. I'm sitting here with a big smile on my face, enjoying the good times all over again.

This series has made me quite emotional. My favorite part of "a telling of history" are the personal day-to-day life stories and experiences. This is one of those series that shows, no matter the disparate circumstances of birth, there are so many more commonalities. An older brother teasing a younger sister, sledding in the snow, hide and seek, being excited to show a visitor something in your home, being intimidated by large parties or groups at dinnertime. So many experiences we all share in our very diverse ways. Looking forward to Part 3.

Samuel Peyps spent some of his life close by at Brampton (the place of my birth). As it is a school, I have not stopped to look at the grounds or building. This was wonderful for me to hear the story of the Earl of Sandwich and his sister Lady Kate Hunloke and seeing the inside of this beautiful building and seeing the pictures of the house when they lived in it, what a grand building. Pity you can not buy it back into the family. What a history. The features of what they found while renovating, amazing and the family crest. I could see how Lady Kate Hunloke and the Earl of Sandwich were feeling as they were going through the building and remembering their past. Beautiful.

What a fascinating episode! Many regards to your father-in-law and aunt! I understand that the Benedictine nunnery was founded by William the Conqueror because their previous nunnery at Eltisley had been destroyed by the Danes. While it is indeed sad to think of the fate of many of the English country houses during the last century, for me, it is even sadder to trace them all back to the terrible dissolution of the monasteries, which not only saw the source of perpetual, Intercessory prayer by the monks and nuns wiped out overnight in England (which was a great comfort to the deeply religious English), but also sealed the fate of the lower classes to total devastation (as the monasteries were the source of hospitals, education, jobs, etc., indeed, a whole social structure). England was still Catholic under Henry VIII, but the dissolution of the monasteries was indeed a devastating blow to the spiritual and social fabric of the country, not to mention the loss of all the precious manuscripts and other treasures. Had England not dissolved the 800 monasteries and later remained a Catholic country, the deeply disturbing Victorian poorhouse in later years perhaps might have never existed for example. This is a history which is not well known at all in modern times, especially in England, but that even 19th century Protestant historians have confirmed. By the way, The Pilgrimage of Grace was the response to the dissolution of the monasteries and was in fact successful until the leaders naively believed the false promises of Henry VIII and were lured to London and put to death. Anyway, great episode!! Oh PS it would be fascinating to do a DNA check on those bones for links to Scottish royalty through Devorguilla de Balliol who had links to the nunnery. Wouldn’t that be a great project for the students at the school! It is amazing what can pop up through ancestry.com.

Hmmm - the Reformation brought spiritual enlightenment to this country. The Roman catholic church was very corrrupt and didn't look out for the poor people at all, but instead took money from them to pay for that unnecessary intercessory prayer you mention. This is because of the wrong teaching about souls needing to be 'freed' from purgatory (a doctrine not found in the Bible). The Protestants were/are by no means perfect but at least we know the Bible in our own language - instead of the Latin used to keep Biblical knowledge from poor, uneducated people - and we know that we need no one to intercede between us and God except Jesus, and we can pray directly to him ourselves with no need for any monks/nuns/saints.
@tessp.l1284
@tessp.l1284 2 жыл бұрын
@@sallyannc3176 I am afraid you are very wrong about the monasteries not taking care of the poor and the sick, it is a historical fact that the dissolution of the monasteries left a great portion of the people unassisted and greatly impoverished. I would suggest you consult the great Protestant historian, William Cobbett, on this established fact. Furthermore, England was still very much a Catholic country when the confiscation took place, and so your defense of Protestantism at this stage and as a response really has no bearing on the subject.
@sallyannc3176

I just rewatched this show after finally, my family had a bit of a problem, being able to finish watching your second live stream about Alberta. This time I understand the importance of listening to your father in law talk about the life behind this old home site. The family had to do what was best for their future. Thank you so much

Awh Julie....you're so sweet to take back your father-in-law and his sister through their childhood home. You made quite a few people happy for doing that. The Brits have such beautiful buildings, old and new. It's been great to hear their stories and memories!

So interesting to hear the personal history and memories of growing up in such a historic place (shocks from a mischievous older brother's train set and finding bones under a floor!). What a wretch it must have been to them to have to sell their home. Thank you for the insight and care you have taken on this video Julie! All the best from Missouri.

So beautiful, thank you for sharing the value of the WWII and what many families had to pass to endure and yet with the loss of war striving to maintain something so precious. The children must feel like in Hogwarts and maybe their educations outgrows in regal stands. I just find it so sweet of you crying at the end and the brothers stories, its so important to have it documented and share it. Wishing the kids had better tables, it does not match the given space.
