My son is gay. No problem with that at all. His brothers are fine with it too. In high school friends of his were coming out and being disowned. We don't have much. What we have to offer these guys is a place to sleep and shower, unconditional acceptance and a friendly face when they need it. Over the years we've had 6 young people (there are gay women too!) stay with us and watched them get through their life in high school. They are to a one incredible people! Don't throw away family. When I was a server, all the homeless people got sent to my section because I usually worked the back section or counter. I would buy them a cup of coffee as refills were free, and they could camp out as long as they wanted as long as we didn't need the booth. I used to work at a pizza in a town with a lot of unhoused and underfed people. But the town also had rules about just giving away leftover food, which meant we had a ton of food waste we could not legally distribute to people who needed it most. The owner of the store didn't like that, so at the end of the night, we would "throw away" all the cancelled and unclaimed pizzas by nicely stacking them in the general vicinity of the dumpsters (but not actually near the dumpsters. Just close enough for plausible deniability.) They were always gone by the next morning. I think about that a lot. My uncle recently announced to our very Roman Catholic family that he and his long time boyfriend were getting married. While everyone else was clapping and cheering, my five year old daughter leaned over to me and said "Can boys marry boys?" I told her yes, and that girls could also marry girls. She paused, then started beaming and said "I'm going to marry Isla (her best friend) then". I told her as long as Isla was cool with it, then I was happy. It makes me happy thinking that maybe my daughter will grow up not being afraid to be herself to her family, because she won't know any different.

A friend/roommate "came out" to me. This was back in the mid 80s, so things were much more difficult for my gay friends. Also... bible belt... so... Anyway, she didn't know how to start, but wanted me to know because she was living at my place and didn't want to hide her girlfriend from me. She started with, "I have to tell you something, but I don't know how. I'm scared you'll kick me out..." My response was, "Ok... step by step. Did you kill someone?" "... uh... no." "Do you PLAN to kill someone, and will need my help hiding the body?" (obviously I was being sarcastic to make a point) "OH... NO!" "Ok then. Are you dying?" "... um... no..." "Then it whatever it is, we can deal with it." She says, "It's just... you should know... I'm gay." I looked her in the eyes and said, "No shit. But what was the thing you were scared to tell me?" Her eyes looked up in surprise, and said "That was it... I'm gay." Me, "Oh. Well... that wasn't so bad. Bring ***** [her girlfried] to dinner one night. I'd like to get to know her better." That was the most EPIC hug I ever got! I kept her secret (she wasn't ready to be "all the way out") And, although we have lost touch over the decades, I still think of her often, and hope her life is wonderful.

I love these stories. I commend you for running around a public park with the flag despite having social anxiety. I couldn't do it. The second story was my favourite because the poster reminds me of my own dad. I'd be willing to bet he still doesn't realise how much of an amazing dad he is, he likely still blames himself for being absent at first. He got clean for his kid, became a single dad to get his son out of a bad situation (like my dad did for me), supported his son in everything, was totally cool with having a gay son, allowed the boyfriend to stay during COVID and then opened his heart to another hurting "child". I don't know a better description for a father.

Friends usually make good life partners. My hubby & I have been friends since kindergarten. We were never anything but friends until we were 20. We started dating & decided 6 months into dating we wanted to marry. Not like we needed a long drawn-out relationship when we'd been close friends for 15yrs at that point. We've been married 34yrs this year. We are still best friends.

I also live in the "Bible Belt", I came out to my mom and while she supported me, she immediately told me to not tell my dad. As I got older and he said things more openly around me, I found out just how much he felt about "the gays". He was "fine" with "them" as long as they didn't "come around his family". I was so glad I took my mom's advice and never told him. It hurt to hear what he said though, it changed how I looked at him as a person.

The man in the 2nd story reminds me of my very green-flag husband, who immediately quit all hard drugs COLD TURKEY the minute he found out he was going to be a father. He's still sober to this day and one of the most dedicated fathers I have ever met or heard of. I'm not the baby-mama, but if we were younger, I do know that if he and I had met while I was younger, I would have had children with him without reservation.

#2 deserves a father of the year award - TWO, in fact, for embracing his son's boyfriend as part of the family, probably not long after being rejected by his biological one. I hope that OP in #2 can always be a beacon and an ally for his son's boyfriend. It's so refreshing to see stories like this, the ones that counter the all-too-familiar homophobia that still stubbornly persists in our society. Seeing stories like this is like witnessing society slowly yet surely heal that wicked part of itself.

Dude, what you said about a lot of restaurant managers being on weird power trips is so true. My dad used to be one of the managers--bar manager--at a restaurant (an exception to this power trip statement, lol), but his best friend at the time was the GM. HE was a menace. Employee turnover was crazy high because of how stressed everyone was walking on eggshells around him--including my dad, his supposed best friend--since they could never tell when GM was gonna be chill and friendly or when he was going to start screaming and belittling people for not doing their jobs properly (even though they were, he was just weirdly uptight for no reason seemingly at the drop of a hat). Eventually my dad couldn't take it anymore and walked out, just quit on the spot one day. It effectively ended their friendship, and once my dad--the buffer between the GM and rest of the staff--was gone, everyone started leaving in droves, including the other managers. Lol The sad part is that aside from his bouts of rage and tyranny, he was an excellent manager. The restaurant ran like a well-oiled machine and was number one in the company for several years because of him. He's unfortunately just an asshole with a hair trigger temper...

My husband and I were online friends for years. We met through an artists discord. We both had major feelings for each other but didn’t want to ruin what we had, just like the first story. We talked for hours on video chat and voice chat every single night. On days he had work, I yearned for his company. He was the last person I heard going to sleep, and the first person I heard waking up. Finally, he told me. I also went pale and shaky and I had to sit down because I had been standing with my phone doing things around my apartment while we talked. I told him I felt the same way. We have been married for 4 years and have known each other for almost 10! He is my best friend in the whole world!! I wish that couple all the best!!

I have never understand throwing your children away for any reason. When my daughters shared who they are with us, we were happy that they felt safe being themselves with us. I love them and we love the women they married who are now part of our family. I am also from the South, the ‘Bible Belt,’ and I know that Jesus would be ashamed of how the supposedly Christian people who live here treat the LGBT community. Jesus didn’t judge the sins so I don’t think Christians are supposed to be judging others. We had multiple people live with us while my kids were in high school because we didn’t judge. For that matter, one of my students (I taught middle and high school) lived with us for five months after her father hit her. We hid her until she got the money together to emancipate herself. The way you treat others says more about you than anything else you do and I want to be remembered as a green flag person. Thank you for your content. I enjoy your videos! 😊

Ah, that second story made me tear up! I'm also queer (asexual, aromantic and agender - so barely existing, haha), but pretty much only internet strangers know. My father would've probably not been happy - he already called me worthless, because I struggle with depression and anxiety.. but he is gone anyways, so who cares. And my mom is just very indifferent (both parents emotionally neglected me as kid) and I always say that she feels like a stranger that I happen to know all my life, so I don't feel the need to come out to her. She would accept me, of that I'm sure, but I was met with such indifference back when I tried to open up about my mental health, that I don't feel like telling her about myself. Pretty much the only person around me that I've told is one good friend... but I'm not sure how he thinks about it. He's Christian and I did ask him what he thinks about lgbtq+ stuff, but he never answered. One time he just said that he can't really say much, because he is so vanilla. (aka cishet).. but he also said stuff, that he wants to be a good Christian therefore he doesn't think it's not right for men to wear women's clothes and such, pointing to a passage in the bible. I looked that up and a few passages before or after was something about stoning people and razing whole villages that believe in other religions. He isn't violent, but it either means that he does believe in those things and doesn't act on it or he picks and chooses.. and at that point, why not just say he doesn't like men in dresses. (The whole thing was caused by me sending him fan art of a male game character in a dress, which looked amazing imo.) He also had an odd reaction when I told him about my gender dysphoria and wanting to get a breast reduction/top surgery because of that. I do know that he likes and accepts me, but somehow I just don't feel completely understood. It's difficult. I just want to feel truly safe and accepted.. and maybe even loved for once in my life. (Platonical/familial love, since I don't do romance, haha) Okay, that's todays rambling done.. If you have read all this, thank you for your time. And whether you read any of this or not, I wish you all the best & I love you. (If others can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason.

Keep on loving for no reason, I view it as a sign of the strength of an individual in our point in history. With so much easy access and exposure to horrible and negative things that happen, to be able to love freely and without reason despite it all is a wonderful thing; and because of your past experiences I think you're an extra strong and thoughtful person. I wish you acceptance both from other people and yourself in your future, and I wish you the best in your journey. Keep on going, you're doing wonderful ❤

Most religious people pick and choose and when their hypocrisy is pointed out - they get angry because it's such a big part of their identity. They often have little - or - nothing else under there and questioning anything makes them fearful. If he's still your friend it means several things - one is that maybe he's grown enough to accept that you can be spiritual without subscribing to ancient values and the second is that you are more important and valuable to him as a friend than a big part of his cultural and moral identity. Cheers to let's just be kind to eachother - for no reason ❤

the second story hit home for me too. I'm a triple A as well, with one very conservative parent and another that thinks I'm confused. True understanding, acceptance, and emotional safety are hard to come by. Your friend is probably unsure of where he stands. He may be trying to rectify his thoughts/feelings with the bible, but doesn’t agree on some points. It can be a very isolating (in my experience) but finding people you can be yourself with makes it a lot easier. There are people out there who can accept and love you, you just have to find them. I hope things get better for you

'Somewhere over the rainbow. Right guys because gay.' That comment honestly made me smile haha. Fun fact, during the 1940s the phrase 'Friend of Dorothy' began to be used in reference to gay men. Essentially being a secret code to avoid hostility because same-sex relationships were illegal at the time. Also speaking as someone who was disowned by parents for similar reason (bi trans guy instead of gay). Massive props to the dad. That gesture undoubtedly means so much to the son's partner.
