I wonder how much of the inaccuracy can be blamed on skin color. I am grateful that you did a review on the Whoop especially as a man of color. Because one of the underline issues with these wearable devices and accuracy that is not discussed is how those sensors have a difficult time gathering information from individuals with more melanin. The darker the skin the harder it is for these devices to get an accurate read because much of it is light passing through in order to get a good read. The worst thing is that the testing on these devices rarely account for that and the corporations are not transparent about how results may vary especially with skin pigmentation.

If you are saying that whoop has difficulties with accuracy when the skin colour is dark, then that should have been same across garmin and other trackers too.

You're absolutely right on the erratic HR. I'd be watching TV and it spends 15min recording me above my max heart rate, which as you said, throws off everything else it's suppose to be doing for me. I did contact their support, they sent me a bicep band to appease me saying it worked better this way while exercising, but they refused to make any comment on why I was having issues while not even moving, even after asking three times. That said, the longer I wear it (about 2 months now) the more consistent it is getting.

Hey man, great review, totally agree, I'm cancelling mine now after 2 weeks of free month, everything you noticed I went through. Sleep assessment takes most of readings from REM and deep stages so quality relays on meeting criteria more than 40% sleep time in these two zones. Just today after being exhausted yesterday and sleeping barely 6 hours I hit the highest recovery 90% telling me yesterday was restorative day 😂. Joke. But garmin isn't innocent either, I just made video showing how activities affect My hR monitor, it's even funnier, garmin vs whoop. Just after i recorded that video i realized how actually whoop is unreliable and decided to cancel. To be honest comparing Hr monitor to classic pulse and stopper check shows that most monitors are not good.

I’ll check out your video. While Garmin does have some issues I do find it more consistent across the board. Thanks for watching!

@@aHealthyMe thanks, I agree, knowing weak points of Garmin it's easier for me to relay on strong features, Garmin can show your gut health with 95% accuracy in my tests. If you realize that stress in your readings actually show up when's something wrong with your digestion you can fix it asap. Second thing I that convinced me is that if you take off Garmin for 3 hours and go for long walk , you put it back on your wrist and it will show your body battery lower like it really was on your wrist. If you properly rest during the day without sleeping it will show battery going up. I show in my first Garmin video that getting score 100 is achievable in few hours.

Bite Jones is correct when he says the HR monitor is off...could be other things, but since he has dark skin the HR will likely not be as accurate as on lighter skin. If the Inferred lights cannot penetrate appropriately this will likely impact data such as HRV, Pi, RR, PVi. This is an unfortunate bias that exists in most wearables.

Great review, very similar to my experience. I really like the app and the way it gamifies the experience but I simply couldn't trust the data. Going for a slow jog was reported as a close-to max heartrate effort which it clearly wasn't. My garmin epix reported a way lower heart rate at the same time (which was in line with how I felt). Even slow dog walks were getting flagged as being in high heart rate zones. This then completely threw off the strain scores and then the needed recovery. In the end I just couldn't trust what it was saying. The only accurate bit was the sleep tracking which did seem good but that was it unfortunately.

If you wear it on your bicep it does make a significant difference difference to the HR accuracy, it’s much more reliable then. For general wear, 2 fingers above the wrist zone is best, then bicep if you are working out. I think the next version does need an improved sensor. 4 years in with whoop it’s the device I always go back to because for the most part you put it on and crack on with your day/week/month and never have to remove it
