Whoopi's reviews were mixed-to-harsh that year (Entertainment Weekly called her performance "assiduously self-congratulatory and determinedly lame") but looking back, she really is one of the better Oscar hosts. Even when some jokes don't land, she maintains a certain magnetic warmth .

I think watching all of these Oscar Monologues is kind of like opening a time capsule and seeing the Variety magazines seeing which movies were popular! Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Steve Martin, Chris Rock and even David Letterman were funny doing these in their own ways.

i love Whoopi but I personally think all her Oscar openings are average and not much different compared to what we get nowadays. A few political jokes, roasting a few nominees. Some jokes land, some don't. All pretty standard. I think nostalgia plays a huge role when people claim the Oscars and its hosting used to be sooo much better.

I like to binge watch all the Whoopi and crystal and Steve Martin monologues. I ended up watching all the 1991 oscars. I really enjoy a lot of them. However, i ended up seeing Reversal of Fortune which I hadn’t seen and then watched Irons acceptance speech for it and thats how i went ahead and saw all the program. I recall the real Van Bulow case and really enjoyed that movie. He was very thoughtful of the real people in his speech and that impressed me.😊
