@jaydunbar7538 Жыл бұрын
If your going to volume shoot, 308 is cheapest. If it’s a deer rifle and only going to see a box of ammo a year then that cost is basically irrelevant and you may as go with the modern cartridge that will make long distance shots a bit easier to adjust for in case that becomes relevant some day. For most people I don’t see it in any way necessary to trade in a rifle they already have to get a new cartridge, the performance difference within the ranges most people shoot just is not a big deal. However if your buying a new rifle because you want a new one or don’t have one, then a modern cartridge with higher BC bullets just makes sense. My wife is fairly new into guns so she got herself a 6.5CM, i however don’t have any rifles in new cartridges, my buck this year was taken with a 112 year old 30-30.

I like the 7mm-08 and .308 both. I think they are a little more effective on deer than the 6.5. My big reason why I use the .308 more is ammo availability. I got 3 boxes of Nosler 150 ballistic tips for $66 delivered. That's awesome in this climate.

Sir, if you don't mind me asking, where did you find that ammo? Last year the only thing I could find was 165gr Nosler and a 20rd box was almost $60 after taxes. Honestly I have no idea what the point of aim is because I'm too scared to shoot them.

How can you be "more effective" than the deer that are in my freezer from a 6.5? The finite details of ballistics are lost in the pragmatic world of shooting and harvesting. It doesn't particularly matter if the .308 hits harder if your shot placement is alright, which it absolutely should be if you're pulling the trigger at a living creature. I respect the price point argument. I have a .308 as well for that exact reason.

125gr is a light Creedmoor round, and 1000yds is easy with it. When I want a 1000yd challenge, I use the .308 playing in the wind. To be clear, I dont feel undergunned when hunting with the 6.5 creedmoor and its low recoil is a bonus. @kirkboswell2575 Жыл бұрын
Nice video comparing these two. However, the 125 grain bullet in the 6.5 is light. For penetration testing, you need to compare equal weight bullets. The 6.5 can go as high as 160 grains, so a better comparison would be with 150 grain bullets in each. A secondary testing could be of efficiency of the cartridges. For that you can use 140 - 145 grain 6.5's compared to 165 - 168 grain 308's. Ballistic coefficient is essentially meaningless in light weight bullets. It's a number that indicates how well the bullet hangs on to its launch speed. Light bullets "peter out" quick. I like the 6.5 Creedmoor, but at its core, it's a short action 6.5x55 Swede, just like the 308 is a short action 30-06. I call them "kissing cousins" - same family, same general characteristics, individual differences.

That's one way to compare, but I think each caliber is designed around a particular bullet weight. For .308, I think that is around 150 grains. For 6.5, which is necked down, I think it was designed for a lighter bullet. So, comparing the different but designed-for weights is a legit comparison.

It seems like a lot of people always want to prove that some other or newer round is better than the .308. We've seen it before and we'll probably see it again. When you factor in cost and the fact that .308 is usually much easier to get, it makes the .308 a no brainer. Now, if you're doing some long range target shooting, sure, the 6.5 Creedmoor is probably a better round for that purpose but if you're looking to go deer hunting or something similar, the old .308 is just fine. BTW, there was a lot of talk when the 6.5 was beginning to pick up steam a few years back that the 6.5 may not be powerful enough to humanely take a large animal without possibly causing unnecessary suffering. The results here are nothing we can really go by but we see the 6.5 is smaller and ended up coming apart while the .308 did what is is designed to do.

@notsosilentmajority1 Good points. I will stick with .308. In regards to 6.5cm, I've seen too many instances of lost game or having to track wounded animals long distances with supposedly perfect shots - so they end up going back to another caliber to hunt with. When I go to the range, seems like the 6.5cm fanboys are always trying to convince everyone how awesome it is. Gets annoying. Yeah, 6.5cm may be better at hitting paper at distance, but not better than .308 at hunting game. When hunting deer, if a bear comes at me, I'll take my .308 and put it down, while the 6.5cm fanboys with their man-buns will grab their man-purses and hurriedly run away.

I might be confused, in fact, I'm sure I am. But I would think a 'flat shooting' bullet would be the one that gets to the target faster. To get to the target in the shortest amount of time so that the bullet drops less. It could be because of all that aerodynamic magic, there's less loss in the forward direction (one loses less velocity over the other). In either case, the one that gets to the target fastest should win the flatness race. But I'm probably wrong.

No, you are exactly right. The acceleration of gravity (32 feet per second per second) is constant, so every bullet from every gun in every caliber at every speed drops 32 feet one second from the barrel, and 64 more feet after two seconds, ad infinitum. All bullets also slow down as soon as they leave the muzzle, Very long-for-caliber aerodynamic bullets are said to have a high ballistic coefficient (BC), and lose speed more slowly than short, blunt bullets, so a 6.5 Creed firing a 140 grain high BC bullet at 2,700 FPS muzzle velocity will actually pass a 125 grain 30 caliber bullet from a 308 launched at 3,100 FPS at 300-400 yards, because the 308 bullet slows down faster. So at ranges past that point the 6.5 will hit higher on the target, which is erroneously referred to as "flatter shooting". I liken it to a coasting race between a semi and a Corvette; if they both hit the starting line at the same time, and the semi is doing 60 MPH and the 'vette is going 50, and both drivers put the vehicle in neutral, a few hundred yards down-track the sports car will pass the semi despite the speed advantage the semi had at the start.

@@noahmercy-mann4323 Thus why when shooting at say 1000 Yards, you have to aim 40 feet above the target to hit it because of gravity...) Thanks for the explanation.

@@noahmercy-mann4323 I don't have the equation, but it's both a function of time, initial velocity, and coefficient, along with secondary effects like the wind velocity, all that. You can generate the velocity final at distance, and then determine where you need to aim to hit put the boolot through the boolzeye. ) But the less time under gravity, the better thus, faster to target wins the race

I've got a 6.5cm and it does not like those soft tips, no matter the brand. I get the best penetration and knockdown out of anything higher than 130gr no matter if it solid or bonded.

I like what your are doing, I’m been your subscriber for... I don’t know how long. I just like to se the waters jogs and the clay targets shot at distance of 100 yards. Something more according with a real shooting distance of a deer. I’m sorry for asking this but I’m from Colorado and anything les than 100 yards is almost impossible, or at least that’s been my experience.

Hope you get over you cold soon. I love my .308, all my rifle deer have been with it but one. Never had to track one. I can't buy a lot of guns so did my research. Came up with the .308, no regrets.

I don't have a 308 but about everything around it. I used to be .270 or 30-06 I wasn't impressed with 25-06 my favorite now is the 7mm-08 I haven't taken a deer with the .243 but several with 7.62X39

I hunt with both. .308 is by far my favorite though.

A lot of people hunt with black powder. That might be a good idea since it's such a large field.

As an handloader i would not get either one of those. Started out with the 308, tested a mot of (for our rouls ok moose cartriges) at a Point i vad one sporter and one heavy barreld 6.5creed. both founded a 7mm.08 where I found a speed middle. in the last year that has moved on, 708 is still one of my favorits bit the new build takes te cake. an 18.5" 300WSM. It got the power, good Selection of bullets and keep up on the balistics. with a PRS can on the recoil is like an .223, Will take down both 6.5creed and 308 in 99%
