"Budget friendly" rifles are typically just fine for hunting. Unless your ridiculously careful, it's nearly impossible to not get a few scratches on a hunting rifle. And I don't care who you are, if you scratch up a extra fancy Weatherby rifle, it's going to turn your guts inside out. I don't buy guns to sit in a safe and never use them. Firearms are built to be fired. Those extra fancy stocks, beautiful polished blue barrels, and engraving still have a place at the shooting bench.

I bought a patriot for my kid in 6.5 creed. It holds a 1.4in 3 shot group at 100y. It won't win any shooting comps, but it hits every deer in the vitals.

Remington Rifles are by far the best, especially the oldies but forget about bolt action for hunting in general, (unless your a wide open Blind/stand hunter i guess) but there is no better hunting rifle than the 760,s and 7600's....by far the most comfortable, ergonomic, and the fastest follow up shots, without any manipulation of the Rifle, other than the 740, 742, 7400, ECT.

From either one have you had to send them back for bolt replacement? There is a reason they discontinued the 770. With the 783. Not shitting in you owning 2 and happy to finally after over a decade and 70 returns for customers that someone actually has the holy grail of thier worse made rifle. If they continued that model line they certainly would have been in par with the 700 mark X trigger recalls given time

Like I told you in Tollivers, I have the 30-06. I've got some fine tuning to do, but when I got to 1 MOA, I left to give others at the range a turn to shoot. Mine prefers the 165 Cor Lokts. That was free handed sighting in, using a bath towel to rest the barrel on holding it like I was going to shoot a deer, not with a lead sled. That's gonna help me dial that little jewel in! I’ve had two of the Patriot models. They seemed ok, but one had to be sent back to Mossberg right away due to a bad crown and sticky safety. They made me pay shipping, on a new rifle I just bought… was not happy to pay $60 to send back a budget rifle. They had to rebarrel the rifle… after I got it back I sold them both. Had a bad taste from the whole ordeal. I also have two mvp patrol rifles. Both had to be shimmed to get them to reliably function with various AR pattern mags. I don’t want to take a loss so I’m keeping them. Mossberg won’t be getting any more of my money for rifles.

A few years back I lent my middle grandson the money he needed to buy a heavy barrel Mossberg in 308. At the time he was a newly minted Navy Corpsman at Camp Lejeune. He took it to the 100 yard range and shot 7.62 NATO. He E-mailed me a picture of how he did. He shot the worse groups of the day with his new Jar Head buddies. Just over an inch. The duality of man, Mossberg shotguns are absolutely famous for being strong, durable, reliable, and affordable. The Mossberg rifles receive nothing, but indifference. The Mossberg pistols are completely unheard of. I've had my Mossberg Patriot for 5 years got the black synt stock and gray cerakote in 30-06, day 1 I threaded the barrel, and now I roll everything from 100gr subsonic plinkers for squirrels to heavy 220gr sluggers for hogs, it does it all. If you hot rod a 150gr to 3,000fps you get real close to 7 Rem Mag performance.

That is amazing accuracy for a rifle in that low price range. The problem with these cheap rifles from Mossberg, Savage, Ruger and Remington is the inconsistent quality control. You might get a good one or a bad one, If you get a bad one you have to send it in and wait to get it back to see if they really fired the problem or replaced the rifle. Fine if you want to take that chance, and its the worst case scenario you can sell it or trade it in if the factory does not fix it to your satisfaction. Some people are on a limited budget and can't afford a Tikka, CZ, Howa, Weatherby or Bergara, which are more expensive but better quality. Thanks for another excellent video.

Hey Who Tee Who that's a nice looking 308win deer catching rifle! Can't wait to see the video to see if this rifle will group with the right ammo. You always have to find the right ammo that a rifle likes to eat. That's the secret and alot of people shoot maybe 2 different types of ammo and get bad groups and give up and say that the rifle is crap! And most of the time that's not true. You have to keep trying different loads until you find what your particular rifle will eat! And I already know that's what you plan on doing! 👍WHO TEE WHO!

I had a Mossberg Patriot. It was 308. It was THE WORST 308 I ever bought. The freebore was so much that to handload a 165gr bullet would have left not enough bullet in the case were I to get near the lands and grooves. Factory ammo got 2.75 to shotgun sized patterns (I cannot call them groups). I have a Savage 110 that turns in .5" groups with many factory ammo loads and handloads are south of .5". There is almost zero freebore with the Savage. I pulled a barrel off of a 30-06 Remington 700 with that issue. Replaced it with a Shilin. Now it is a tack driver. I was never happier to get rid of any rifle. Learned my lesson. Maybe they have improved? Hope so.

The price isn't necessarily the issue or the brand for that matter. Everything that's manufactured especially in mass production can and does have qc issues. A toaster, bolts and screws, a bicycle, motorcycle, lawnmowers, vehicles, baseball gloves, refrigerators, washing machines, hot water tank you name it. Some of the higher end products have more issues than the others. You never know, it just depends on how well the company that manufactures the product if their qc is good or not.

I've had Mossbergs that performed, and those that didn't. After my last fiasco with my Patriot in 350 Legend, I swore TO MOSSBERG... I would never buy their crap again. The issue was a bad magazine. How hard is it to replace a magazine? Let me send this in, you send me a new one. Nope... They tried coaching me on how to fix it because "they didn't have any 350 Legend magazines in stock." They also wanted me to send in the entire rifle! I went to their website, BOUGHT a new magazine that was IN STOCK and wrote them a message of client departure. The new magazine works perfectly and it's feeding as it should. Me + Mossberg = Never Again. I had feeding issues with a Henry Sidegate. They paid shipping, fixed the rifle TWICE, no photos necessary... and this rifle is covered for life if it ever fails again, no extra charge. THAT is how you do business in America!

I had a Patriot in .243 with a black synthetic stock and silver cerakote fluted barrel. It shot well but without having a locking bolt on safety, I ended up trading it after one season of the bolt opening unintentionally and cycling shells onto the ground. I won't buy a bolt rifle anymore without a locking bolt. Otherwise, the rifle performed well with Core Lokt ammo on deer.

I have four bolt action rifles and that exact rifle is the one that usually goes to the blind with me when hunting. The other three are all way more expensive but they all shoot about the same and the Mossberg fits me better than any of them. The Mossberg only likes two factory loads. I have tried almost every brand and it shoots Norma Whitetail and Hornady Whitetail in 150 grain soft point better than the rest. Weird thing is all my other rifles are just as picky about specific brands and loads as well. Do the work and find out what your specific rifle likes before giving up on it. If it doesn’t like any of them, get rid of it no matter what brand it is or how much it cost because “only accurate rifles are interesting!”.

Ive had great success printing .308 with Norma White Tail in both of my rifles surprisingly. Didnt even know it was considered "budget" ammo until I was on a forum on day. Doesnt shoot budget to me 😅, and it's now put 3 deer and a hog in the freezer

I've gotten the 300 win mag. Works great, only complaint I had was the cheap stock, so I put on a Boyd's spike camp that was on sale. I don't shoot it much since each case takes like a pound of powder and it's for hunting, but makes holes where I want them with complete reliability. A lot of folks seem to have had QC issues, but I just assume they had a moron on the line for a bit who happily wasn't there when mine was made. I use copper so I single load since they're so long, but whatever.

I bought a 30-06 Patriot because it was within my budget. The best group I could get was 3" at 100 yards. That was with 6 different loads. I was planning a trip to Wyoming for elk. Certainly was not sufficient. Maybe for PA big woods deer. So I sold it and full disclosure of what the groups were to the person buying it. I would not try a Patriot again.

Hey this is larry,I live in Alabama and was watching one of your videos about you going on a hunt soon and about shot placement.I bought a tree lounge deer stand many years ago and video tape was in it.I sit down and watched it and never seen no one drop a deer that fast and never took one step.I slowed the video down and watched it and seen the shot placement.I seen the bullet hit between the top of the shoulder blade and the spine. On my next hunt i tried that shot placement and WOW! It droped and did not take one step and never messed the meat up. Same size hole going in as it was going out very small. The bullet cuts the main artery to the heart and paralyzes the spine. Ever since then shooting anything there drops exactly where is it.

Great video and a discussion starter :) My first long range rifle in 308 was a cheap Mossberg MVP LR. It had more than respectable accuracy, I was shooting matches out at 100 yards with handloads. I have video proof of that. A couple of things bugged me: I did not like the wobbly bolt even when it was closed and a glitchy trigger with safety blade. Maybe it was just my rifle. Other than that, it would not hesitate to make it my main bush rifle

I didn’t have a good experience with the one I had. It was a 3-4 moa rifle and I even spent about 200 smackers trying to find an ammo it would shoot well. The best I could get out of it was around 2-2.5 moa with s&b of all things. The 165 grain copper hunting ammunition from them. Mine was not fun. Hopefully they have improved their quality control because I love their shotguns

I don't hate them personally. I do understand that they're hit or miss. You either get a rifle that is smooth as butter and half MOA, or you get a piece of junk that won't shoot smaller than 3 inch groups. It's a shame but, at least Mossberg's customer service is good about it. I have never heard of them giving anybody grief over making a warranty claim or anything.

Just my opinion if your in that budget range for a hunting rifle just go with the savage trail hunter or the ruger American gen2. Haven’t seen a bad thing said about either of those 2 rifles but the mossberg hasn’t had a consistent reputation with their rifles. I love their shotguns though!
