"Budget friendly" rifles are typically just fine for hunting. Unless your ridiculously careful, it's nearly impossible to not get a few scratches on a hunting rifle. And I don't care who you are, if you scratch up a extra fancy Weatherby rifle, it's going to turn your guts inside out. I don't buy guns to sit in a safe and never use them. Firearms are built to be fired. Those extra fancy stocks, beautiful polished blue barrels, and engraving still have a place at the shooting bench.

I’ve had two of the Patriot models. They seemed ok, but one had to be sent back to Mossberg right away due to a bad crown and sticky safety. They made me pay shipping, on a new rifle I just bought… was not happy to pay $60 to send back a budget rifle. They had to rebarrel the rifle… after I got it back I sold them both. Had a bad taste from the whole ordeal. I also have two mvp patrol rifles. Both had to be shimmed to get them to reliably function with various AR pattern mags. I don’t want to take a loss so I’m keeping them. Mossberg won’t be getting any more of my money for rifles.

The duality of man, Mossberg shotguns are absolutely famous for being strong, durable, reliable, and affordable. The Mossberg rifles receive nothing, but indifference. The Mossberg pistols are completely unheard of. I've had my Mossberg Patriot for 5 years got the black synt stock and gray cerakote in 30-06, day 1 I threaded the barrel, and now I roll everything from 100gr subsonic plinkers for squirrels to heavy 220gr sluggers for hogs, it does it all. That is amazing accuracy for a rifle in that low price range. The problem with these cheap rifles from Mossberg, Savage, Ruger and Remington is the inconsistent quality control. You might get a good one or a bad one, If you get a bad one you have to send it in and wait to get it back to see if they really fired the problem or replaced the rifle. Fine if you want to take that chance, and its the worst case scenario you can sell it or trade it in if the factory does not fix it to your satisfaction. Some people are on a limited budget and can't afford a Tikka, CZ, Howa, Weatherby or Bergara, which are more expensive but better quality. Thanks for another excellent video.

I had a Mossberg Patriot. It was 308. It was THE WORST 308 I ever bought. Factory ammo got 2.75 to shotgun sized patterns (I cannot call them groups). I have a Savage 110 that turns in .5" groups with many factory ammo loads and handloads are south of .5". There is almost zero freebore with the Savage. I pulled a barrel off of a 30-06 Remington 700 with that issue. Replaced it with a Shilin. Now it is a tack driver. How hard is it to replace a magazine? Let me send this in, you send me a new one. Nope... They tried coaching me on how to fix it because "they didn't have any 350 Legend magazines in stock." They also wanted me to send in the entire rifle! I went to their website, BOUGHT a new magazine that was IN STOCK and wrote them a message of client departure. The new magazine works perfectly and it's feeding as it should. Me + Mossberg = Never Again. I had feeding issues with a Henry Sidegate. I have four bolt action rifles and that exact rifle is the one that usually goes to the blind with me when hunting. The other three are all way more expensive but they all shoot about the same and the Mossberg fits me better than any of them. The Mossberg only likes two factory loads. I have tried almost every brand and it shoots Norma Whitetail and Hornady Whitetail in 150 grain soft point better than the rest. Weird thing is all my other rifles are just as picky about specific brands and loads as well. Do the work and find out what your specific rifle likes before giving up on it. I have a 5.56 MVP. It has shot well. But it had bolt and magwell problems. The magwell fix was a $100 fix and the bolt was just figuring what it was and some filing work. But that should not have been with a new firearm. Thanks for the video.

This reminds me, I had bought a Mossberg 4x4 in .25-06 at a discount from a shop that was going out of business. I need to get that out and see what it can do.

It looks like the cheapest rifles today are more accurate and have better triggers than the top of the line rifles from the 80's.

The problem in the Patriots is serious manufacturing inconsistencies. Like gambling. One will be great, one will be complete garbage. I have an old Mossberg 4x4 and will never replace that with a patriot

I bought a 30-06 Patriot because it was within my budget. The best group I could get was 3" at 100 yards. That was with 6 different loads. I was planning a trip to Wyoming for elk. Certainly was not sufficient. Maybe for PA big woods deer. So I sold it and full disclosure of what the groups were to the person buying it. I would not try a Patriot again.

I have the Patriot in 270 Win and it is great for hunting in the south , where we are usually in the woods. No real long range shooting down here.

Hey this is larry,I live in Alabama and was watching one of your videos about you going on a hunt soon and about shot placement.I bought a tree lounge deer stand many years ago and video tape was in it.I sit down and watched it and never seen no one drop a deer that fast and never took one step.I slowed the video down and watched it and seen the shot placement.I seen the bullet hit between the top of the shoulder blade and the spine. On my next hunt i tried that shot placement and WOW! It droped and did not take one step and never messed the meat up. Same size hole going in as it was going out very small. The bullet cuts the main artery to the heart and paralyzes the spine. Ever since then shooting anything there drops exactly where is it.

Great video and a discussion starter :) My first long range rifle in 308 was a cheap Mossberg MVP LR. It had more than respectable accuracy, I was shooting matches out at 100 yards with handloads. I have video proof of that. A couple of things bugged me: I did not like the wobbly bolt even when it was closed and a glitchy trigger with safety blade. Maybe it was just my rifle. Other than that, it would not hesitate to make it my main bush rifle

I have a mossburg 30-06 and it’s been absolutely great to me, I’d like to get another caliber eventually but it has served me well. All rifles have their quirks and I’m not saying my mossburg doesn’t but it shoots and it’s inherently accurate and I’m accurate with it

I didn’t have a good experience with the one I had. It was a 3-4 moa rifle and I even spent about 200 smackers trying to find an ammo it would shoot well. The best I could get out of it was around 2-2.5 moa with s&b of all things. The 165 grain copper hunting ammunition from them. Mine was not fun. Hopefully they have improved their quality control because I love their shotguns

I am looking forward to the results. Lots of people have had accuracy issues. Maybe it was a barrel manufacturing issue like ultimate reloader, and they fixed it

I think we can all agree the Remington 770 that they produced for only over a year back in 2012 was thw worse "budget" bolt rifle. We had more returns and send back for repair to Remington due to those shitty cast metal two piece bolts breaking

I hear it's hit or miss on the Mossberg, especially the 308 Winchester. I bought a used Mossberg 30.06 with a newer Redfield scope on it a couple years ago, I don't remember what model. I gave it to my brother because, I got a Interarms Mark X in 30.06 with a Leopold Scope on it.

I don't hate them personally. I do understand that they're hit or miss. You either get a rifle that is smooth as butter and half MOA, or you get a piece of junk that won't shoot smaller than 3 inch groups. It's a shame but, at least Mossberg's customer service is good about it. I have never heard of them giving anybody grief over making a warranty claim or anything.

I had the exact same rifle. Exactly the same. I bought it brand new and was so excited about out it. Owned it for exactly 15 mins till I got home and my wife took one look at it and now it’s hers lol. She’s knocked down some big bucks with it so I’m not too upset. It’s a great rifle , very underrated, which is good cause it keeps them affordable for those in the know.

Just my opinion if your in that budget range for a hunting rifle just go with the savage trail hunter or the ruger American gen2. Haven’t seen a bad thing said about either of those 2 rifles but the mossberg hasn’t had a consistent reputation with their rifles. I love their shotguns though!
