I know people who think that if you modify any product, in any way, you destroy the collector resale value of said product. I don't buy a firearm as an investment. I buy a gun to use, either as a hunting tool, or as a target /marksmanship tool. Heck of a nice tack driver you got there.

My investment-grade guns aren't shooters. (rare vs high-end) The ones I'm shooting lately (ARs/uppers) came with threaded barrels. (.25-45 SRC, 6.5 Gdl, .30 RAR, .350 Legend) My big game bolt-actions shouldn't need threaded. 😊 Also as a .22 cal PCP airgunner I'm focused on .22 LR vs the CFs. Nothing I've owned has ever changed group sizes, only POI as others have said.

I have the same rifle in.308 win. I put on a clamp-on Witt brake and it changed the poi slightly but not the group size. I was tempted to have the barrel threaded but couldn't bring myself to modifying the gun. It shoots groups like your 220 Swift. In fact shoots everything well. What a gun. You did well buying that gun. Only thing I will say is mine has an extremely long throat. You can't get anywhere near the lands and still magazine feed it. Thank you for sharing.

I had a mosin that i wanted a brake on. Had to chop an inch or 2 off to thread it, but afterwards it shot just fine. The main thing to focus on is proper muzzle crown if you shorten a barrel. Threading the same length barrel shouldnt negatively impact the rifle. The weight of the muzzle device you add will. Just my 2¢ but keep on rocking your setup if it shoots groups like that. 👍

From what i’ve read, the suppressor dampen the barrel harmonics. Which is a positive. Threading the barrel, and adding the weight did dampen the harmonics. You done good.
@Unknown_user_est1776
@Unknown_user_est1776 7 сағат бұрын
It drives me up the wall when people equate barrel harmonics to overall accuracy. Yes, changing anything on your barrel will adjust harmonics. That does not necessarily mean accuracy also changes unless you change your harmonics in between each shot. In most normal circumstances, it will only change your point of impact slightly which you can see here. His point of impact changed ever so slightly.
@MichaelRandall-f1o

Changing muzzle devices I find out changes the bullet impact because of barrel harmonics and group size. I use my reloads and not factory ammo.😢 if yours doesn't than that barrel is a keeper. And that's my info and experiences from a 300 wsm, 6mm Mongoose, .223 rem. 308 win, and a 22-250. The 300 wsm and 6mm Mongoose are sporter profile barrels.

@whoteewho my dad built up a 220 Swift in the mid-70s a totally awesome rifle it has taken many many mule deer in Northern Utah the only thing he ever had bad to say about it is with the bullet moving so fast and then as light as it was it was not real great to use in heavy brush country some of the brush with deflect the bullet but other than that a great rifle. Threading a barrel is a gamble, but if it’s a quality barrel to start with the gamble is not so bad. Barrels with lots of internal stress tend to not take it well, but they also tend to not handle heat very well so a person will already have an idea if it will be a problem. By not handling the heat I mean it will shoot wildly (flyers if you prefer), not just getting a bit bigger groups. Thin barrels will frequently see a dramatic increase in group size from heat, but if it doesn’t have material stress the point of impact won’t shift the dispersion will just be larger. A can should never make it shoot worse unless there is an actual problem like something being loose or not concentric, but a point of impact shift is common and generally repeatable so correcting for it is a none issue.
@varietasVeritas
@varietasVeritas 7 сағат бұрын
Adding a suppressor does change the harmonics. That is why the point of impact changes. There is way to know if the change will be better or worse.

Check your groups at 300 yards. Start with reloads with COAL same as factory. Then use Wilson seating dies to adjust up and down. You may be very surprised it only takes a little movement up and down to find the sweet spot. Start with two shot groups. Pick the closest and move a few thousands up or down. I have achieved three shot groups in one hole with this method. Make sure you have brass sized properly and good powder charge before doing this process. Good luck

90% of the time adding weight to the muzzle, via muzzle device, will help and improve accuracy. Heavy sturdy guns tend to shoot better. It will change point of impact causing you to rezero or at least check. But that goes for anything that is added to a rifle system.

The only TINY issue I have with suppressors is the weight on the end of the barrel. The extra length has NEVER been an issue for me, and EVERYTHING else is just positives. Here in South Africa we don't have any restrictions on suppressors, so it's kind of cheap as well. I think mine worked out to just about $150 in total for a Extremely nice one.

I can run my Scabage down to 1.5 lbs any lighter and the trigger releases just running the bolt... for catching deer... the 55 gr v-max worked well in your rife -- use those I just finished reading a 447 page thread on the RokSlide forum ... folks are getting great results running Sierra 77gr TMKs for catching deer...etc.. if your rifle still has the factory 1:14 twist barrel...77gr boo-lots prolly wouldn't stabilize in it would be fun to test some heavier longer boo-lots to se what it can and can not stabilize...

Well execute threading won't hurt accuracy, and a suppressor should not cause a significant POI shift.... and so it proved. Perhaps Americans aren't as familiar with suppressors as those of us that live in countries where suppressors have always been freely available, and think that accuracy is affected. You could save a bit of overall length with an 'over barrel' suppressor, that will only add 3 inches or so to the rifle. The Swift is a hot rod, but with good bullets has the energy for deer. Varmint bullets should be avoided for deer as they open too fast, but some of the heavier solid copper ones like Barnes "X" or Bergers ought to kill like the Hammer of Thor.... That goes for the 22-250 too which is nearly as fast and is gentler on barrels, mind you the barrel life thing is not that significant in a hunting rifle that is not fired a huge amount, and not rapidly. Many hunters only put 50-100 rounds a year through their deer rifles, so even a short 2000 round barrel life is 20 years of shooting......and if you look after it, even a Swift will do better than that before significant accuracy is lost. 🙂

2 things to say. If you have a 6 ounce trigger you really need to train yourself to keep your finger outside the guard until you KNOW you want to send it. Also, I've noticed for years when you sight your rifles in, and you call it good, they're always off to the right of center. Is there a reason you do this, or just a tendency I've picked up on, on my own?

WTW, great video. Just being the devil's advocate. Will a suppressor change the harmonics? Of course it will. Adding anything changing the center of mass and weight will change it. Change doesn't mean worse, just different. Some guns will be more than others. Changing point of impact doesn't affect accuracy just where you have to aim to hit the target. This is why we go to the range and practice. P.S. love the 220 swift.

I think what was trying to be said is it's like a lot of things you " MIGHT " change it enough for the worse that you won't be happy. Funny thing is if it got worse you try a different load and I bet 1 of the 1's that didn't work before works after.

I have had 7 or 8 rifles threaded by a competent gunsmith and they all group great when shooting with the can on. Love the Swift but gave mine to my son. It has a 26" bull barrel and he is wanting to get it threaded. My 7mag has a 26" barrel and I hunt with a suppressor on it. Yeah it catches on branches but I hunt in Wyoming so the brush isn't near as daunting as it is in Mississippi.

6 oz is way too light for a hunting rig. A trigger that light is good for target shooting but I personally would not hunt with a hair trigger. Once you get a deer in the scope too much risk of touching off before your ready. If I could use a suppressor I totally would. That rifle looks long like a musket with that can!

If threading them would hurt it, they wouldn’t come from the factory threaded :)
