Hey Wade. Solid review! I started paddling in the early 90s. Here are some numbers of the old school boats I had: Perception pirouette 11foot2inches, 23.5 width. Extremely fast for a plastic boat... WS. Frankenstein 9foot9inches, 24inch width. Still a fast boat. Then boats started getting wider and wider and wider for stability’s sake. These new sloooow boats sure surfed well. Then along comes the ripper large. A speed machine that surfs great AND has edges. It put a smile back on my face after all these years! Cheers!

What I gather (only actually tried the Rewind on G3 so far): Rewind: bigger rocker + smoother edge = stabler. Ski comparison: naturally does parralel v well in all water, All Mountain Ski. Ripper: smaller rocker + sharper edge = less stable but way faster. Ski comparison: naturally carves/short dynamic v well, specific ski (Downhill or Dual tips). Could you say these are more or less the slicey equivalents of the Dagger Code and Pyranha Scorch?

Got to go with the Ripper for me. Love how technical it makes you paddle. Moving around the river, grabbing eddies, tailies in and out, s-turns, pivot turns, attainments and surfing. Only fit into a large ripper and I hope the large rewind isn't a tank like the Axiom 9.0
@WadeHarrison3 жыл бұрын
Great feedback richard and sadly I think the large rewind is a tank I paddled it briefly so maybe you could give one a demo and let me know what you think
@sbaldwin213 жыл бұрын
I have large ripper, axiom 9.0 and large rewind. Much prefer the ripper for surfing and playing on grade 2/3 and if I was a better paddler I’d take it on harder stuff but I ain’t (yet). The large rewind is much more stable for me on G4, but less playful and not as fun to surf. Not a lot of reviews or comparisons of the large rewind, and those that have are connected to dagger. The axiom 9.0 is a strange beast - super high volume half slice and I think of it as my surfy creeker - similar dimensions and volume to a steaze with less rocker. I haven’t really decided between the 9.0 and large rewind which to keep, but will not get rid of the ripper simply for how fun it is on my surf runs.

I paddle a small ripper, it's the 1st boat I ever bought and committed and still love it 2 years later. 23 inches wide is really narrow, but since I learned in it it feels really good. I also love that hard edge.

I’d love to see a comparison on the full slice boats / or whatever these new ones are actually called - like the Ozone vs the LL Homeslice although they’re a little different - just trying to find a little more playful boat than the Antix/Antix 2.0 I’ve paddled both side by side in the sam wave/same day - but looking for a new rig I can play more with. Great video man!

Great comparison! I’ve owned both boats and I agree with all the points you made. I do love the play/creeking with the rewind though. I like the way you can pivot turn the ripper better than the rewind I guess due to the lack on stern rocker on the ripper

Wish you would have added the Antix 2.0 for a ménage à trois comparison. But I already know what you would say most likely, if you want more play than river running, the Antix is the half-slice for you. Great job as always. You really are the best whitewater kayak reviewer on the net, with Alex Barham being a close second. My next boat will probably be a half-slice, more than likely an Antix 2.0 or Rewind. I've noticed a lot of slalom paddlers really like the Ripper and hype it a lot. I'm guessing because of the similar feel with the Ripper being narrow, fast, and maneuverable.

Awesome review. Curious what you would recommend to someone with a season and a half of expetience. Been pushing into class IV recently. I've mostly been in a 4fun, and would probably keep that boat as well. Thinking that the 4fun would somewhat fill that river runner playboat niche and the ripper would be a good addition for bigger water and training river running technique. I demoed both, but unfortunately they only had a large rewind and don't think i got the real feel of it.

I completely agree with everything EXCEPT outfitting. Dagger 9/10, Pyranha 7/10. The ripper is the first Pyranha boat I've owned and was disappointed with the outfitting. Hip pads are always folding over or falling out. And sometimes the strap comes out of the ratchet when I'm getting in the boat. Took lots of extra time and foam to get it set up right. I was comfortable in the Rewind within 5 minutes. Maybe that's because I'm tall and skinny?
@WadeHarrison3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was coming more from functionally they both work Pyranha does need more time to set up and they should seriously look at a complete overhaul I agree dagger is really good and more user friendly but both work
@AnonymousOtters3 жыл бұрын
Great comparison. I haven't paddled the Rewind, but just traded the Ripper for an Antix 2.0 and very happy. The Ripper outfitting was at best a 4/10 for me. Had to replace backband buckle, hip pads wore out after 10 days, and personally the seatpan shape and adjustment sucks. It's too bad because I loved the hull
@romerobinson82793 жыл бұрын
How do you like the antix compared to the ripper? I’ve yet to paddle a 2.0 antix
@WadeHarrison3 жыл бұрын
Wow 4/10 is brutal on them I agree with you that the outfitting could use some refinement. And yeah good trade on the Antix 2.0 I really liked that boat also it’s a playboaters dream half slice

Hey Rome I paddled the Antix 2.0 and feel it’s suitable more for playing and hole moves and is good downriver but not as good as either of these all the current trends of half slice are really good in their own way you need to demo if you can to see what fits your style the best

@@AndrewMoizer I've surfed both dagger boats, both are great. I preferred the planning(flat) hull of the axiom, but I haven't paddled much in displacement(rounded) hulls. That being said, the ripper isn't all that new and as production and distribution of new boats pick back up I think it will be around in a used market. I feel it is a surfing god amongst men for boats. Big waves, tight waves, waves that you don't even notice are there because it's just a damn ripple, this hull eats them all for breakfast! Pyrahna couldn't have given it a more suitable name.
@coldwateronly3 жыл бұрын
Nail on the head Wade! Fast and nimble, slow and playful, pick your poison. I was surprised at the lack of hull speed in the rewind. It felt like a 43# play boat. Personally in a boat at these lengths the speed trumps play. I have lighter, shorter boats I can throw around and stand up in less water but I don't have a quiver of race boats lol.

you should pay careful attention to the outfitting and how that feels. Dagger has outstanding outfitting. They have something new this year which replaces the Mamba or find a Mamba. Pyranha boats are good but just take more time to get them right. The Burn is a tried and true favorite and the Machno is another good choice. The Liquid Logic Remix is another good boat, easy to roll and has been around for years. They have great outfitting also.
