CineFix sat down with River Gallo and Esteban Arango, the filmmakers of Ponyboi (2024), to talk about their film and how they used the crime thriller genre to tell a unique story about LGBTQIA+ and ethnic identity.
Ponyboi follows River Gallo, as the titular intersex sex worker, who finds themselves on the run from the New Jersey mom after a drug deal goes bad.

I don't know why "subverting expectations" is becoming a trend in movies nowadays. I thought leaving the "plot twists" in the movie would make it memorable.

It's not exactly new. George RR Martin made an entire career off it even before HBO adapted his books. It's extremely prevalent in the Fantasy and sci-fi genres.

Well, when plot twists have been used to the point of cliche and derivatively executed, the only memory it brings up is whatever film did this to make it so overused.

Thanks for putting these interviews up! Definitely a few movies I’ll be looking out for if they get distribution. 😊

Looking forward to an opportunity to watch this movie. Btw, it's unsettling how many people don't have a clue what "intersex" even means.

And/or just hate anything that isn’t 100% about people that look/identify exactly like them. I mean, I’m not a super-powered Kryptonian, but I still enjoyed Superman. And even if a movie comes out that I don’t enjoy - guess what, I’m not the target audience for it. I DGAF about the “Fifty Shades” movies. Doesn’t mean I think they shouldn’t have been made or will rage against a *MEDIA OUTLET THAT COVERS MOVIES* for covering it.

I did see the movie online 2 weeks ago and I loved it and it told a great story and had some great fucked-up characters. Dylan O'Brien kicked it in the ass with what he plays in this 1st as a charming D-bag of a guy that turned into a scary villain. I hope it can come out so more people can see it.

It’s strange to me that the comments section is so negative. This channel has always shone a spotlight on films like this.

@@bostonpride1717 I haven’t seen the film but is it actually political? Or is it just exploring gender and sexuality? Bc there are countless films that do the latter without being political propaganda.

@@bostonpride1717 This is just a troll comment, ignore anyone that argues that cinema shouldn't be politicized. I cannot imagine a more heavily politicized form of art. If Conservatives want to feel excluded by progress, then let's exclude them. Fuck pandering to stupid peoples' feelings.

@ShootAUT art doesn't need to be political but you can ignore the stuff you don't like. You can go make your own non political art. But no, get offended at other people making art that hurts your feelings. I'm glad people have free expression instead of the conformity you want. Go watch the telletubbies or something that seems up your alley.

@@Courier_333 "Ignore the stuff..." Would, if I could. But it's everywhere! And people won't stop shoving it in your face. It's annoying af, so they should expect some backlash - that's part of freedom of expression, too. (You know, you could just ignore it. 😉) I don't want conformity. I'm just fed up with people treating any kind of sexuality as something special. It's just nature. Get over yourselves.
