If any story is only as good as the antagonist, does that mean a good villain is even more important than the hero? We tend to think so! So what are the elements that build up to a perfect big bad? Is it an air of inevitability? A great plan? Just plain scary? All of the above? Let’s hash it out with CineFix's Top 10 Movie Villains of All Time.
From horror movie slashers stalking the final girl to good guys doing bad guy things for good guy reasons, a villain's motives are of course unlimited. What sets the truly great ones apart from their mustache twirling counterparts is, our favorite thing here at CineFix, a complicated stew of characteristics. From a tragic backstory like Lotso Huggin’ Bear from Toy Story 3, to the unstoppable killing machine AI in The Terminator, to villains that are just SO hateable like Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator or Mr. Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life, to the charming and relatable wing of villainy with The Avengers Loki or Bodhi from Point Break.
The point is, what we love about villains is an evil and entertaining cocktail of traits that are ALL worth diving into.
This list was written by Clint Gage and edited by Justin Donaldson.
The Picks:
10 - Just Plain Scary - Michael Myers from Halloween (1978) dir. John Carpenter
9 - Hopelessly Unstoppable - Sauron from The Lord of the Rings (2001) dir. Peter Jackson
8 - Hateable - Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) dir. Milos Forman
7 - Chaotic - Li’l Ze from City of God (2003) dir. Fernando Meirelles, Kátia Lund
6 - Goal Focused - Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction (1987) dir. Adrian Lyne
5 - Relatable - Count Dracula from Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) dir. Francis Ford Coppola
4 - Are THEY the hero? - Roy Batty from Blade Runner (1982) dir. Ridley Scott
3 - Hero’s Foil - The Joker from The Dark Knight (2008) dir. Christopher Nolan
2 - Hiding in Plain Sight - The Armitage Family from Get Out (2017) dir. Jordan Peele
1 - Our Own Darkest Desires - Frank Booth from Blue Velvet (1986) dir. David Lynch

So much went into that role. Just look at how Heath studied the look and colour palette of the Joker's costume, the structure of his makeup, the state of his hair. You can almost smell the guy. Good to know some broad lines came from Rutger's Hitcher, another one whose stink came of the screen to follow us decades after... And Tom as Rudy in Ironweed, where he plays besides Jack Nicholson 2 years before his Joker, might have put some eary likeability into Heath's performance. But it's Heath who does the magic here. The voice, the laughter, the absence of fear without removing the adrenaline, all the little sounds that come from that mouth... And let's be honest, when Heath enters the scene it's his universe we're watching. Just has the Joker would have it.

I know you mentioned Anton Chigurh but it's a travesty that he's not listed as one of the actual top 10. No Country for Old Men is one of my favourite movies of all time and it was Anton that carried the movie. He was absolutely terrifying and he managed to make himself that way mostly through body language which speaks to how greatly Javier Bardem protrayed him as an actor. Also I can't believe Hans Landa doesn't rate a mention. That opening scene alone was one of the great scenes in cinematic history. He was pure evil, he had a purpose, was highly intelligent, highly dangerous and most of all he was absolutely terrifying. Definitely one of the best villians of all time.

Tbh I'm so tired of seeing Star Wars pop up on no. 1 picks in movie lists that I was actually relieved seeing Darth Vader not getting the first spot. Don't get me wrong, Star Wars is a great story with many worthwhile accomplishments, but I do sincerely believe people tend to overrate the series. It seems that no matter the category, be it characters, visual effects, soundtrack, cinematography, story, or whatever crosses one's mind, Star Wars always pops up as the GOAT which is simply not true. While it does nail a lot of aspects flawlessly, I find lots of other movies surpassing it in many ways. Yes, it's good having it on a list, but don't give it more credit than it's due just because it is the most popular choice. It's one of the reasons why i love CineFix so much.

And while technically the protagonist, John Wick is a fun one. another archetype I like a lot: the villain that only appears late into a movie. this applies to "finally he shows up" Harry (In Bruges) or john doe (se7en) as well as the typical "plot twist villains" tyler durden (fight club). keyser söze also kinda counts but in a different way. those are almost always fun to watch imo. aprt from that, I also wanna throw in michael gambon from The cook, the thief, his wife & her lover. one of the scariest villains ever put to film from a rather unknown movie.

Col. Hans Landa from Inglorious Basterds should have been in the top 3. Scar also made every kid cry when he killed Mufasa. And Thanos was so convincing of genocide that some people state… “Thanos was right”. Darth Vader has to be on the list as well. Apart from that, good list!

Honestly Fletcher from whiplash is the one perfect villain. Not only rivals the protagonist physically, mentally, we hate him, smart, backstabber, knows his field better than anyone and on top of everything, he succeeded and we are happy he succeded. Hit all the notes

Good list as always. If i could offer one villain that would fit this list and not be the obvious answer like Hans Landa, Joker etc. it would be Raymond from Spoorloos. He is a terrifying character not because of the crime that he commits but of the good he commits and is still capable of committing such a disturbing act after.

Great list. Tough list. Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber gets mentioned in your lists, but never with the love he deserves. It was his character, not McClane's, that redefined and recharged the action movie genre for decades to come. Also, malign the film all you want, but Patrick McGoohan's portrayal of Edward Longshanks in Braveheart was pitch-perfect. I would also throw in Col. Jessup (A Few Good Men), Col. Mathieu (Battle of Algiers), Spattoletti (Love and Anarchy), John Doe (Se7en), Aaron (Primal Fear), Amon Goeth (Schindler's List) and Le narrateur (Last Year at Marienbad). Thanks for another entertaining list.

A great addition would've been Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes in Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd." He fits the "work in sheep's clothing" archetype so well, he almost redefined it. Amazing on so many levels: that is was Andy effing Griffith playing the part, that it was made in 1957 - foreshadowing everything we're experiencing right in this very moment in American politics, and that it still holds up stylistically to any similarly themed films of the past couple decades. It's that good, and most people don't know it even exists.
