@@rmiller334 The idea that a shotgun reduces the risk of over over penetration that rifles have is nonsense. Sure, if you shoot birdshot it does, but that would be majorly handicapping your capabilities. When you use something like 00, #1, or #4 buck it can penetrate a few walls made of drywall, not really any less than 5.56 which tends to yaw, slow down, and break up relatively quickly. So it’s kind of a distinction that isn’t based in reality.

I regularly train with them, I love modifying them, I love the power, and I especially love the versatility. Another thing to love about them is that they are like a manual transmission. The purpose of a shotgun is to feed you and your family. With the correct load, it can drop pretty much anything edible, from birds to buffalo. It can do many other roles in a pinch, but putting food on the table is the primary role of a shotgun. It will reliably put food on the table better than any other firearm. Iraqveteran8888, I used to be a FUD about 4 years ago pre-Covid bullshit. I would have considered myself pro2A but I did not understand the firearms dilemma very much at all. I actually started through watching years of your videos way back to the beginning videos of this channel or at least what was available and have kept watching your videos since that time. I have since become actually pro2A and come to aquire a pretty decent selection of firearms in the last 4 years. I just kind of recently came to the realization that I don’t really own a defense shotgun. I owned only a single 28” semi shotgun for hunting. After much consideration, I bought a beretta 1301 yesterday (day before this video). It’s the most I’ve ever spent on a gun so I felt a bit guilty but I had just came to the realization of how effective shotguns are in relation to how little love they seem to get. They obviously have a few limitations but the range of capabilities with a shotgun is still far beyond my actual knowledge. It sucks when you start out as a FUD or anti-gunner at 30 years old but I’m trying to catch up with training and as you said at least owning the tool is a start. It’s nice to see you put out a video like this a day after I bought the most expensive gun I’ve purchased but the other great thing about shotguns is that other than ammo, they are not very restrictive for anyone to own. I chose to start with a much pricier option but I could just as easily have gone with a mossberg 590 or something even more affordable. There are lots of very reliable options for any consumer which is really nice.

For me a shotgun is a good idea due to versatility. Yes you can defend yourself pretty well with a shotgun and you can hunt well with a shotgun. You can buy a Mossberg Field and security model and have one shotgun, 2 barrels, that can cover most of your needs for a lot less than an AR. You can hunt anything from rabbit, dove, to deer all with the same gun.

Shotguns are, in my eyes, one of the most underrated tools in the self defense world. Yes, they have a learning curve and aren't the best for everything but I cannot think of a more effective, affordable, and versatile firearm out there. So a couple weeks later we were bored and wanted to mess around and I said I have some old telephone books and duct tape. So we gathered everything together and shot up one with his 5.56 . It definitely held together well for a whole mag and I said let see what the 12 gauge can do on a fresh one and I swear . It ballooned and almost exploded on the first round and on the second round it blew up. After that I realized a shotgun was superior considering 2 rounds vs 30.

Haha you said it! Best thing about a shotgun these days is it ‘defeats’ level 4 body armor with very high powered slugs, the round doesn’t go through it just creates massive backface deformation way over the 44mm NIJ limit. The only rifle caliber that can do that is 338 lapua magnum or 300 RUM or up. I’ve even seen some level 4 armor stop m995/m993 yet the shotgun can still do real damage and likely stop an attacker wearing level 4.

Shotguns beat armor the best way possible, sending a 5+” pattern that, unless perfectly centered on the plate, will be putting holes in the bad guy. There’s a video going around of two cops being knocked out of the fight despite the armor and ARs by a drunk dude with birdshot.

One of the common misconceptions about shotguns is their effect on armored targets. The weakest body armor can stop a 12ga slug so people write it off as useless against armor. In reality even with rifle plates backed by soft panels taking a slug to the chest can potentially be lethal if not incapacitate the wearer. Even though the slug won’t penetrate the armor it is dumping a lot of kinetic energy into the wearer and will easily brake ribs and/or rupture organs.

The 12 gauge shotgun loaded with 00 buckshot in normal room distances is a proven fight stopper against home invasions and will end the threat rapidly. I have witnessed the fight stopping ability of this weapon and can confirm its decisiveness. Even so still have a handgun avaliable in your home defense battery of firearms

Shotguns can be amazing! The biggest weakness is range. Well for “home defense” range isn’t much of an issue. I can think of very few realistic instances where you are “defending yourself” by putting rounds down range at 200 yards. Good luck explaining that in court.

My shotgun(s) is my 'inside my home' weapon that will get me to my armory room for the other 'toys'. Whether it's the Winchester SPX with folding stock or Charles Daly AR-12 mag-fed semi-auto, I can clear a path with either. Once I get to my armor and rifle, the shotgun goes on my back as an extra support weapon. Shotguns definitely have a place in home protection.

@@chizorama Love it. It's well made, handles as well as my old 870, which I was very much used to, and I really enjoy it since I purchased and assembled the aftermarket folding stock to it. It gets pretty compact that way and is easily handled and fired, whether folded or open. The gun has run flawlessly with all types and brands of loads. I can't say enough good things about it. It's money well spent as far as I can say.

You can pick up a Mossberg Maverick 88 Security Model with the 7+1 magazine tube for around $250-$300 Brand new. I have started making my own slugs from birdshot loads and found that I can fit 10 in the magazine and they're super low recoil but still blow a hole through a 2x4. They also sell shorty shells and there's a video of a guy using the OpSol attachment and he fits 11+1 and it cycles 100% reliable. Shotguns are cheap, reliable, fun, and POWERFUL!

It’s not just about aiming characteristics, it’s about effect on target. Buckshot applies almost the full force of the shell to the first thing it hits. A slug will almost certainly pass through with a ton of force still left to damage whatever is behind.

Great video Eric. I have a stainless 38 special 3" for home and carry and a 44 special for some accurate stopping power if I feel I need it, but living in a residential neighborhood I rely on my Mossberg 20 Gauge with #4 shot for home defense! 100+ 1/8 inch lead balls will do some awful damage at 20 to 30 feet, but not penetrate into my neighbor's house. I've always kind of favored shotguns for hunting or sport shooting since I was a boy, and your point is something I have always agreed with. One round should do the trick! For longer ranges on deer you can get a rifled barrel and put a scope on it. its a very versatile tool to have in your collection

Kel-Tec KSG 3-in loaded with mini shells will put you at 23 rounds with one in the pipe, that makes capacity a non-issue. Being a Bullpup makes it smaller package and more maneuverable in the house. And as you said with custom rounds you can go for the lower recoil loads. But with the KSG you have two different feed tubes for two different flavors of Chaos.
