Star Trek is such an ideal picture of the future that everything within it is pristine in a way that doesn't actually feel achievable, so when you build something to match that it doesn't feel like a real object. The grit and sometimes eclectic nature of Star Wars designs makes it feel more like something that could exist, so when you actually have one of these items in your hand it's easier to suspend your disbelief and just take in the magic of the world.

My favorite Star Trek spacesuit design is the one used in Star Trek: First Contact for the EVA fight against the Borg on the Deflector Dish on the Enterprise-E. Those spacesuits were reused later on in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and more frequently and with some modifications in Star Trek: Voyager. As for Aesthetic that speaks to me, Star Trek all the way and the Enterprise-D designed by Andrew Probert is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of that universe's design work.

To add to the philosophical complexity in prop replication, are questions like, “Do I replicate the actual prop…or my suspended disbelief in the story?” So, a prop gun may have been actually just a lightweight plastic toy that was modified, painted, etc. but in the story, it has weight that reflects your understanding of how heavy a gun should feel. I don’t make props, but if I did, I would cater to my inner child so I would make them to my personal standard: if I were in that story and picked it up, it would be like this. Play/“pretend” 101.

It was inaccurate to refer to the Polaris Dawn spaceflight as a tourist one. The astronauts on board check off all of the same boxes that the NASA and ESA astronauts who've flown on Dragon have. Two of the astronauts, the mission specialists, are SpaceX engineers, ones who worked on the new spacesuit design and operation. Jared Isaacman did pay for part of the flight for himself and his friend , Kidd Poteet. Kidd is a retired USAF fighter pilot.* Jared and Kidd were responsible for piloting the spacecraft, there was no ex-NASA astronaut on board for that. This is Jared's second spaceflight as pilot-in-command. Sarah Gillis spent years training NASA astronauts how to pilot and operate all of the systems on Dragon, and directed all of the contingency training, much of it in person. (She also taught Jared.) Anna Mennon is an experienced SpaceX mission control director and an ex-NASA ISS mission control director. The Polaris Dawn program is an (unspoken) joint venture with SpaceX to develop crewed LEO operations for Starship. It's not spoken of as such formally but the signs are pretty clear. *Kidd was a test pilot, instructor/commander of the USAF version of Top Gun, and member of the Thunderbirds. He stacks up next to a number of ex-USAF pilots in NASA. Jared is as close as you can get to being a fighter pilot as a civilian. He owns his own MiG-29 and founded a company that's taken over as the aggressor squadron for Top Gun, ditto for the USAF and several allied air forces.

Just wanted to correct this, for the record. In former NASA astronaut Cady Coleman’s recent autobiography, “Sharing Space,” she explains that there were originally four sizes of the EMU, NASA’s current spacesuit. At one point, they eliminated S and XL, keeping only M and L. After complaints from some of the larger male astronauts, the XL suit was reinstated. But the same accommodation was not made for the women for the S suit. So that is why there is a more limited range of suit sizes than originally planned, not that the components for some sizes have aged out of use.
@ciarangale47382 ай бұрын
I mean it does make sense, that an oversized suit is workable, but a too-small suit is a real issue. Id rather have a little too much room to wiggle than be literally unable to stretch properly
@trentfaust522 ай бұрын
@@ciarangale4738 The issue with the elimination of the size S suits for Coleman and others was that at that time, in order to qualify for a long-duration mission to the ISS, you had to to be certified for EVA. So that meant that she had to qualify in a suit that was too big. They had to pack it with padding, and even then it sounds as though it was exceptionally challenging to be proficient in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab in EVA training in a mis-sized suit. I do understand your point about it being easier for someone to use a suit that is too big than one that is too small. But I found the decision to eliminate a size-class of suits to be a bit befuddling. The Agency goes through an exhaustive selection process for astronauts, accepts them into the program, and then takes away a key piece of equipment for some of them to be able to do the jobs they were selected for. I understand that it was likely a cost-saving measure, which is unfortunate.

That parallels the history of air travel which was initially affordable for only the wealthy then as aircraft design technology advanced airliners became larger and more efficient the cost of air travel became affordable for the middle class..
@donjones47192 ай бұрын
@@scottfw7169 Yes. 1920s and early ''30s "airliners" carried ~6 passengers and were used only by the rich or certain businessmen. However, there is a much steeper curve for spaceflight. Passengers on even the simplest tourist flight will need a lot of instruction. That costs money. I believe spacesuits will be omitted and reliance placed on the spacecraft's redundant sytems. The launch costs will remain high, even for Starship. It'll take a lot of time and a lot of trust for that to be human rated. Flying to orbit in anything else will remain at at least $10 million per seat.
@harvey666162 ай бұрын
Seems to me that given the current political environment, space tourism is an effective way to encourage spaceflight research and development and to get funding from the private sector. That said, I also think it's fair to say that society at large could make much better use of that money if we did a better job taxing the wealthy, as we did in the US through the early 1960's (when the highest marginal rate was 90%). One significant reason billionaires can afford to fund space travel this way is that they are keeping so much of the wealth that they've acquired at the expense of, and through the use of, the general public. I mean, I guess another perspective is that by having such radically low taxation of the wealthy, we enjoy the benefits when the money they've been able to amass is used for stuff like this. But personally, I'd rather not leave the question of advancement in spaceflight and other important technologies up to the whim of a handful of billionaires (not to mention all the other societal benefits we fail to achieve because of insufficient taxation).

There's a huge amount to talk about in the human experience that isn't politics, and Star Trek has always been willing to address that. I like some of the upgraded versions of the first contact suits that popped up in STO Ontop of things with props in different movies/shows/ect of the same thing, you also might have specialty versions of some props that are for specific scenes or something that heavily changes on one hero or stunt prop (sometimes due to damage and repair or just needed for specifics such as colors, especially metallics, being muted/painted over due to the lighting for scenes where it didn't work. There was one that was extremely jarring the movie focused on a hunter back from an expedition where they captured something, three major filming points and a key prop had changes each time. It starts in his home where he's discussing the events of the expedition with a reporter, his rifle is on the wall...it goes into a flashback/storytelling thing where they zoom in on the rifle with the intent to then switch to the jungle scenes with zooming out from it, but they'd filmed those first and, apparently, in shipping the hero prop around, it had gotten damaged (wart hog ivory sight if I remember right that had broken off during transit back to the studio), they also do a reverse of the transition back to the home when his story is over, and they hear a report that the creature they caught got loose, so he grabs that repaired rifle design and heads off...well, apparently between filming that portion and the climax the weapon was damaged as well and is clearly different in the last part of the movie.

While both Trek and Wars' franchises are fantasy, it is easier to believe the Trek ships could actually exist. They seem more utilitarian and practical than Wars. An example: the Borg cubes. Why is it always these big channels that have these weird ad issues where it doesn't play or can't be skipped so you have to reload the video until it works?

Are you talking about the Chekov suit in wrath of Kahn? Kahn grabbing and single hand lifting a guy on a handle for a back yard fence.... On a space suit.... Hilarious and not lost on me

My dad introduced "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" to me as a teen because of the cast! 😅🥰

I am more in to S'Trek than S'wars, but I do think the outfits/costumes don't seem fun to make, outside of Quarks outfits they are great. I like that the aesthetic for the Federation is minimalist, it fits so well with the utopia of their society and focus on betterment of all. I also get as a production that is great for ease and cost.

The thruster suit? It would be quite cool to have one of those.

Complete with long-winded tutorial explaining how it works, lol. "Warning: your emergency evacuation thruster suit is on..."

I honestly agree! They miss the mark on space suits so often bro it’s funny 😂 (totally understand the limitations of budget design etc) the only suit I personally like is the one from Enterprise

Lots of people bringing up the First Contact suits which I think is valid, but my favorite spacesuits in Trek are the ones from Enterprise!

The Red Bull/Felix Baumgarter space jump suit fascinates me. Talk about a specialized piece of kit designed out of essentially theory only!

There is one flaw In Buckaroo Banzai - they hold back the best part of the score until the closing credits. It should have been the main theme - it would be as iconic as Indiana jones or BTTF! p.s. Watch Perfect Tommy in the credits.

Have you seen those fake sleeve tattoo shirts? I was thinking of just a forearm band of that material with your ruler on it! Make?
@SavageGreywolf2 ай бұрын
I would assume that material stretches in a way your skin doesn't (or at least you'd really HOPE it doesn't, hahaha) which might make it crap as a meterstick.

Well, each one his own. I for my part would anytime prefer the Excelsior over the Millennium Falcon. Its like comparing to drive a jaguar roadster and an station wagon in regards to elegance.

Adam should make the infamous Spock helmet. Just for the memes.
@palkokity82352 ай бұрын
I just knew he would say the spock OMP suit. Other than the "worker" suits we see at the space dock, I can only think of one suit scene from the original show and two from the TOS movies. The only really industrial or gritty ship in the Trek universe is the Klingon Bird of Prey or Cochran's first warp ship from First Contact. Just about everything else is too refined except some of the vessels in the Original Motion Picture. Those had similarities to everthing else going on at that time: Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rodgers, The Black Hole, etc.

I used to be an absolute Trekkie. Then the Expanse came along and basically slayed that entire love for me. Since then, Star Trek (minus DS9's Dominion War a bit) has been to clean, pure and happy. Treknobable also doesn't hit on anything for me. Give me Babylon 5, The Expanse, Firefly and even Doctor Who still.

How about making the spacesuits from Farscape, like John Crichton's suit or the Peacekeeper suits.
@thomasbecker96762 ай бұрын
I doubt Adam is familiar with Farscape.

You have mini model Adams, maybe make an Orange Spock suit for a little Adam as a starting point

What do you think of the _Georgiou-_class design? If anything in Star Trek is gonna scratch that itch, I think it's the _Georgiou._ Take a look? Please? It's so worth it! (Honorable shout to the _Akula_ class too.)

Not a fan of the original series silver suit with the red and blue hoses and the tall bubble helmet? Or the radiation suit that looks like bubble wrap? I admit to loving the Motion Picture suit with the 2001 style helmet, and the more 1979 Alien-looking Wrath of Khan suits with the little handle so Khan can carry Chekov around like a suitcase.

Star Trek universe that looks like Star Wars universe instead is ideal tbh. I will give TOS credit though, the sweater-based starfleet uniforms are a great beginner cosplay platform. Though, a WWII-style leather A2 flight jacket hand-painted like period bombers but for, perhaps early, Starfleet? Now that's cool....
@farshnuke2 ай бұрын
To be fair my favourite Star Trek ship is the NX-01 Enterprise and the uniforms mean I can't think of a single thing I'd like to cosplay (Ironically my favourite thing to cosplay would probably be one of the sexy outfits designed for the women in TOS because when you look at them you can say "oh that's from that episode")
@c1ph3rpunk2 ай бұрын
Why not do a “What Would JJ Do?” Fanfic version of a Trek suit but guided by a Star Wars aesthetic. The hardest part would be the lens flare though. Not sure how you’d get dirty lens flare visible from at least 150 miles away.

I would rather the Defiant from ST than the MF from SW. However, the Slave 1, Tie Fighters, X-Wings, and Ghost from SW is way cooler the ST's shuttlecraft. I do like Bird of Klingon / Romulan large ships over SW's battlecruisers / star destroyers. I am just glad we have two great "universes" to enjoy. And Buckaroo Banzai? One of my all time favorites. The flash back where John Lithgow runs out of the lab and turns back towards the camera evilly hunched over and hisses is hilariously awesome.

You like the Millennium Falcon design more than the Enterprise design? They’re both great, but there’s nothing that compares to the elegance and perfection of balance and speed than the Enterprise- especially the re-fit Enterprise from The Motion Picture.
