Why African Gospel Pianists Favor F-Sharp Key???
I've observed a strong preference for the key of F-Sharp among gospel pianists in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, and Kenya. I'm curious why it's become the "national key of Africa."
Despite the complexity of F-Sharp, which involves a mix of black and white keys and is generally challenging for beginners-unlike in the West, where I learned to prefer the simplicity of the key of C-African musicians often ask me for tutorials in F-Sharp.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I find F-Sharp challenging. Even though I'm proficient in all 12 keys, I would choose F-Sharp last due to the difficulties in executing my signature licks and runs in this key.
After posing the question on Facebook, I discovered that the preference for F-Sharp might stem from a tradition of generational teaching among self-taught musicians, with each generation learning from the one before.
I'm inviting feedback on why F-Sharp is popular while sharing that my favorite is C, followed by F and G. I'm curious about others' top three keys and encourage comments on this topic.
