Why African Gospel Pianists Favor F-Sharp Key???
I've observed a strong preference for the key of F-Sharp among gospel pianists in countries like South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, and Kenya. I'm curious why it's become the "national key of Africa."
Despite the complexity of F-Sharp, which involves a mix of black and white keys and is generally challenging for beginners-unlike in the West, where I learned to prefer the simplicity of the key of C-African musicians often ask me for tutorials in F-Sharp.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I find F-Sharp challenging. Even though I'm proficient in all 12 keys, I would choose F-Sharp last due to the difficulties in executing my signature licks and runs in this key.
After posing the question on Facebook, I discovered that the preference for F-Sharp might stem from a tradition of generational teaching among self-taught musicians, with each generation learning from the one before.
I'm inviting feedback on why F-Sharp is popular while sharing that my favorite is C, followed by F and G. I'm curious about others' top three keys and encourage comments on this topic.

Well you said it. Its C. Its easy. If I am learning a song in another key and I am struggling to figure it out, I would transpose to C, figure it out and then reproduce it in the key I was trying to learn it in.

LMAO I used to HATE F# cuz I grew up reading Methodist hymn sheets and none of them are written in F# so it used to be such a strange key to me. But after having to improvise (painfully at first) some songs sang/written in that key it actually isn't that bad. I still think C# and F# are useless in sheet music when songs written in them can be written in C and F respectfully since they're much easier keys to play and are only semi-tones away. But yea I find it so strange, especially with East African keyboardist, they play everything in F# LMAO. I'm a West African (Ghana/Nigeria) myself. My favorite Key is A even though I'm better in key F.

I am from Nigeria and this is what I personally face all the time. Majority of keyboard players love F# and I think I can answer this question Mr Warren; 1. Due to the major pentatonic scale, it is easy to visualise. 2. A high percentage of keyboard players use a 5-octave keyboard. What this means is that their V chord (C# major) is the lowest note on the keyboard if they play in F#, thereby enhancing their bassline 3. Another reason I think F# is preferred is that it consist of all black keys (even though C# Major and B major also consist of all black keys.) 4. Another reason, which you have also said is that they learnt it from one person and someone learns it from the other person and it goes on and on like that. It's just the trend on the continent. I wonder what is so special about the key. I play all keys on the keyboard and even the last set of keys I learnt were B major and E major. 5. A high percentage of keyboard players on the continent don't have a formal education on music including myself. I was taught in church by someone who studied music and I was taught how to read sheet music. If your teacher has no idea of a key,say Bb major, he can't teach it but he can only teach a key he is familiar with - in this case F sharp major. Unlike the west whereby you are classically trained in schools, you have in-depth knowledge of music and you have gone through music and you have certificates. My dream is to become a concert pianist like Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Yuja Wang, Glenn Gloud, Evgeny Kissin and the likes. 6. Another reason is Laziness. They don't want to improve their skills and techniques. They limit themselves to the knowledge of their teachers thereby making them stagnant and therefore resulting into the use of the transpose button(Believe me , Africans transpose a lot😂). In conclusion, the trend of F sharp is just a trend that has been passed from one person to another and a high percentage of African songs is in the key of F sharp. I stand corrected. Thank you very much sir.

Don't worry, the west also has many musicians who aren't academically trained and don't necessarily have a thorough theoretical understanding of music, alongside trained and knowledgeable musicians. Both can make beautiful music and many times they play together.

I think that's Spot on Warren, its mainly because thats the first key we are taught (well for most of us). But also, the pentatonic scale ( 1 2 3 56 ) are the black keys, this makes it quite handy actually, so if you just put your hands on the black keys you will play something that will probably sound ok lol .As you can probably tell, F# still has a very special place in my heart F# --> LETS GO...

Thank you for all your amazing content. Am a Nigerian music producer and keyboardists living in Nigeria with about 12 years of experience playing in church...I started out playing in the key of F (because my teachers at the time could only play in that key) and have since learned to play all keys..here are a few reasons I think F# is a popular key in Africa 1. African music makes use of the pentatonic scale a loooooot...you might not hear the pentatonic so much in the vocal melody but definitely from any melodic instrument...and F# is and easy key for the pentatonic scale 2. African music is very Rhythm based.for a beginner It's very unlikely you will play a wrong not banging out African Rhythm in the key of F# 3. African music is very simple from a harmonic stand point. If you know the 3 primary chords and the 6 minor chord you are covered...and again, besides the major scale, the pentatonic scale is the most useful. Anything outside a major, natural minor and pentatonic scale is almost never used (except in churches/African artists that combine a lot of urban gospel chords with African drums like tim Godfery)

I play in C or F# most of the time. Learn in C on youtube then apply on F#. These are the 4 main reasons we play on F#: 1. The orginal reason most of us started and stuck to F# is because it is exactly the center key of most of our keyboards which has 61 keys (I've never seen an 88 key piano in any of the churches I've been to over here except on youtube). With F# being the center, we have enough room to solo on the right and play the bass notes on the left. 2. You can easily play with speed and accuracy in F# while standing up which many keyboardist over here sometimes like to do, it's very difficult to do this in another key (you can try and see for yourself). 3. A lot of us practice on keyboards having the transpose button (I've never seen a keyboard over here without a transpose button except on youtube), so we don't see the need to learn to play all the keys when you can play in any key on the same key thanks to the always present transpose (at least for us). 4. The nature of our songs require playing at speed switching between the I, IV and V chords (usually triads), it is extremely easy to do this in F# without pressing unwanted keys. How to verify the validity of these points 1. Get a keyboard with 61 keys (ensure it has the transpose function) 2. Search for african praise on youtube (I suggest nigeria or cameroon praise) 3. Practice to play the praises on the key you're most comfortable with 4. Practice the praises on F# 5. Compare both

I just love the sound of F# and find myself incorporating it with other keys like D, and B major. I love putting the F# at the base of a D chord when it works for example. Before I studied music theory I always loved playing with just the black keys and found it was physically harder but easier to make some great melodies. Later I realized it's just the pentatonic scale which is great for improvising. I think that's why I gravitated to love using F# a lot.

I do try playing in all 12 keys but sometimes it's kind of hard because your basically playing thesame thing but at different points . I really thank those who came up with the transpose function because it's a very useful tool for keyboardist

Hi Warren. I am from Uganda 🇺🇬 and play F# especially in Pentecost churches. I fortunately play almost all the Keys well but F# is my favorite. I learnt to play in C# and then C and then I added F and G and later I found F#. It changed everything. It sounds good and different (I can’t explain why) - Even in your previous video of “Must learn augmented chords”, your movements on F# were particularly so great and sounding better than in the other key. Also I guess given our style of songs like Seben and Makossa and given that we always play in a one man bad requires us to play the melody, the bass, the rhythm all on a 61keys-keyboard and at a very high temple, F# is mostly comfortable for the task.

I also realize all the pentecostal musician brothers i came across are also only playing in the key of F#, so it was easy for me to pull off something from their playing style.

It is taking me a long time to really get good enough to play gigs using different keys. Here lately I've been steppin g out my comfort zone more. But I still play in C most of my gigs just to have something to go with my singing. I do the same thing playing with others. 😅

My favorite keys are B and C, however I can play comfortably in all keys. I grew up in an African gospel church and the truth of the matter is 90% of the time people that like to play in F# only know how to play in that key and their understanding of music theory is none. All the people I peronally know that only play in F# learnt how to play in that key by watching players who also play in that key only.. so you can see how the cycle that continue this way. Ultimately, it's just a lack of piano fundamentals and music theory that has brought this furth. one of the comments from warrens video suggests the reason is due to some african styles like makosa... but the truth is that you could play that much more easier in C

D flat/B flat minor, F/ D minor and then B flat/G minor in that order. As far as why I’m guessing that when I first started teaching myself by ear D flat and D minor fit the best with my voice and also that several of my favorite songs at that time were in D flat or D minor. I was in my 20s then and now that I’m 70 those keys don’t work quite as well with my voice as they used to but they are still the keys that I am the most easily able to move around in and find the chord progressions that I can hear in my head as a song writer. Though I’m always working on being able to play comfortably in others I find that I’m usually drawn back to them in order to be able to fully reproduce the chord progressions that I’m hearing in my mind. After working out all the chord progressions, inversions and modulation points I usually try to figure them out in a key that better suits my voice and sometimes I can but I must admit that for the purpose of getting the song down to its finished form I often find that it’s easier and much more comfortable to just use the transpose function on the keyboard. I guess for me the objective has always been that of a songwriter more than of a performer but that said even at 70 years old I’m still trying to improve my keyboard skills and advance my music theory knowledge. I definitely enjoy watching U-tube videos/ tutorials by folks like you and believe that we’re never too old to learn something new so thank you for doing what you do.

In Worcester South Africa, the key is E....all the "skilled" players play in E and all of them started from the same teacher. I agree with you, top key for me C and then F and 3rd choice A. If someone sings and back in the days I would start of in C in if they say the key is too high I go to F. Now you can start and I will fall in but if you Say, hit me with a note, I will hit you with C

When I embarked on my keyboard-playing journey, I initially chose the key of C major due to its reputation as the simplest key for beginners. However, I encountered challenges-I still sounded like a novice, lacking the expressive dynamics I desired. Seeking an alternative, I experimented with C sharp, finding it more compatible with my playing style. Eventually, I settled on F sharp. Interestingly, the popularity of F sharp seems to be on the rise, particularly among African keyboard learners. Many rely on external resources, whether physical or online, to enhance their skills. Notably, F sharp material is more abundant and accessible compared to other keys. Laziness also plays a role; rather than mastering all keys, people often request their favorite key for convenience. 🎹🌟

In my opinion F# is more easier to memorize, and the pattern of the keys 2-3/3-2 depending on the inversion’s makes it easier to navigate. Also the white keys are more so all alike across the board without breaks between the sets(again 2-3/3-2) based on the inversion. We need to not forget that the octaves are identifiable by grouping the 5 black keys(#/b)’s. Once you identify your mid F# octave, you can easily just duplicate patterns on all the other octave’s depending to how deep or sharp you want to sound. Playing in F# also gives more freedom to the fingers especially when vamping(playing up-tempos songs .) But overall the key gives more flexibility to play African song patterns more freely. When you look at Zouk, Makosa, Seben, and most our African praise songs are played by more so a one man band. You the keyboardist playing the melody, riddim and bass as well as using drum loops. To easily flow during these long sessions as well, keyboardist tend to transpose all the other keys to F#.

I think the best answer would be F# is too much taught especially in playing of styles like seben or Congolese and south Africa. Favorite keys F#,C#,E and B

I guess F# is popular in Africa, especially Nigeria and other black African countries because most of the church praise music and secular music are very convenient Vocally, and I guess for the piano, it has more black buttons; and most semi advanced piano players love it for that. Also, in Nigeria and most other black countries that play makossa, highlife and other genres, the keyboard player are mostly Comfortable with F# when they have to split: playing the bass lines on the left hand while they solo with the right, she there is no bass player

I don't think I ever played on F# in Nigeria. I mostly would have played on F or C. Other common keys D, G, and B flat to accommodate vocal range.
