Merkava Tank - Israeli Merkava Main Battle Tank - Merkava Tank is a main battle tank used by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces). The tank began development in 1970, and entered official service in 1979.
Here are the four main variants of the tank that have been deployed.
- The first Merkava tanks, Merkava Mark 1, were fielded in April 1979. Those tanks took part in actual operations during the Peace for Galilee War and proved themselves to be more effective than all other tanks in the theatre.
- The second generation, Merkava Mark 2, was first delivered in 1984. Production of this version began shortly after the adoption of the Merkava in 1983, and continued until 1989. It is basically the Merkava Mark 1 with extra armor and an improved fire control system.
- The Third generation, Merkava Mark 3, was introduced in 1990 and became the backbone of the Israeli Armor Corp. It features a larger g un, a threat warning system, and more advanced modular armor that can be changed in the field.
- The last one is Merkava Mark 4 which entered production in 2001. It is the fourth production model of the Israeli Merkava Main Battle Tank series. The Mark 4 offered improvements in Firepower, Protection and Mobility over the Merkava Mark 3, but retaining the same unique troop section in the hull rear and the engine compartment in the front.

Kornet is good against tanks period. The Kornet is relatively new by the way, first version in operation 90s. Merkava hull is from the 70s. I have yet to hear of one tank being hit by a Kornet while suffering only minimal damage. Considering the merkavas regardless of number have been hit with Kornets while still often having a majority of the crew survive, they seem to be doing a decent job. Also, I have not heard of a single trophy equipped one being successfully engaged with any infantry anti-tank weapon in actual combat.

One correction: The "Troop Section" isn't actually a troop section. It's where the ammo is stored. You can transport troops there, but if you do the tank only has 12 shots instead of 72 (which would make it almost useless). The idea is that once the tank has almost expended it's ammo; all the empty ammo containers can be thrown out and it can be loaded with wounded, before retreating for resupply.

We used it many times for SF deployment and sniper team deployment. just remove ammo from one side and you have enough space for team of 6 (just dont forget to fit the matrases there :) And no one expected infantry poping out of it

The video really muddied information about the tank and it’s variants. The design features for protection and armor are much more then just the trophy system. The tank was designed from the onset for crew protection. The engine is placed in the front of the tank allowing for an extra layer of protection for the crew. The tank also has a rear hatch to make extraction easier if there is a casualty or if the tank is disabled. The first and second versions had a 105mm cannon however 3rd and 4th have 120 mm cannon. Not to mention a mortar as a compliment to the armament. The engine got upgraded through its variants, meaning the current version is faster and more powerful. Speaking or power plant, the name merkava means chariot because of the fact the power plant is in the front, like a chariot.

Most modern rounds can penetrate the crew compartment despite the engine which only becomes shrapnel. The engine in front also increases the heat signature of the merkava. It was already a slow tank to begin with but it having a weak lower plate armor makes the engine vulnerable especially to engine fires. A disabled tank is usually a sitting duck. Take note that it's so much cheaper and easier and faster to design weapons to counter tanks than to design a tank itself.

@@Military-TV You should be more open to criticism, with all due respect this video is supposed to be informative but it's an information mess, mixing some characteristics between 4 different tanks (and those are 4 different tanks developed decades from each other) and forgetting to mention others, some of them very important and unique to this tank. You even had a picture of another tank (maybe an m60/Magah) as "Merkava 3" while highlighting its different parts and all when it's clearly a picture of a different tank. Well done for putting the effort but it's reasonable that people will point the errors on a video that is supposed to give out information.

The Merkava 1 and 2 had the 105mm gun. It isn't until the Merkava IV that the Trophy was used. I'm surprised you didn't mention the engine being in the front for protection and to allow crew to get out of the rear. The Merkava tanks can also be used as an APC

Your right about everything besides the APC part. I serve in the infantry and have done many training ops with shirion (armour) the tank cannot be used as a APC but it is the base of the new APC the "Namer" it has room for wounded but cannot move any more than 2 or 3 soldiers and then its not combat effective because you have loose bodies inside the tank it cant maneuver or fire at 100% not to mention its super dangerous, I've been inside them and they have a rule that they dont move the turret no matter what when infantry is inside because it can easily kill or maim anyone inside not in a combat position. And it was only a ride to the start of the op after a dry run. You can fit 2 combat soldiers with full kit in the back if they are small and not negev gunners and still be combat effective, but no fun at all for the infantry inside, you are smushed up against this flimsy little metal gate that is supposed to protect you from getting chopped in half by the turret. Id rather walk :)

An excellent tank indeed , however it has a great heat signature due to the engine which is mounted in the front of the tank , however it provides an extra layer of protection for the crew from hit landings at the front of tank , all and all a great piece of machinery.

The ergonomics of the tank is amazingly well executed. I never thought about using the engine itself to supplement armor or having a rear escape hatch. Makes me wonder if they'll upgrade the Merkava or go to a brand new version.

3:09 those are not coaxial machine guns. the coaxial in inside the turret, coaxial to the main gun (that's why they call it that). the 12.7mm M2 on top of the gun is used for training, to simulate the main gun fire, with a friction of the cost of a real round.

isnt the gunner also in control of the 12.7mm machine gun,from what in know its remotely operated by the gunner and is mostly used in single fire mode to kill terrorists without wasting a tank round or causing much collateral damage.

@@shimonzozut7617 the 0.5 is also cooxial to the gun, so yes, the gunner (and also the commander) controls it. It was designed for training, to save the cost of a gun round (at first, the firing was done by the loader, who pulled a rope attached to the trigger, and latet on replaced by an electric machanism so that the gunner did the firing). In the early 2000's it was also used in combat, in places a 105/120mm round would make too much collateral damage and the cooxial machine gun is not accurate enough or wouldn't be effective. But the 0.5 is not as accurate as a real round. Not even when fired in single rounds

At 3.00 you mistakenly said that the merkava has a 7.62 coaxial machine gun. This is not true. The coaxial machine gun is the M2 50 cal that is mounted right on top of the main gun. This is not always present though as it can be added and removed based on mission requirements

the Merkava Mk 4 could also serve as a formidable armoured personnel vehicle (although bit larger)!!! ofcourse this would mean removing the turret altogether & replacing it increased roof height!!! raise the height of the Merkava Mk 4 to accommodate troops & add doors at the rear!!!

My opinion is that Tanks have reached their use by date, stand off missiles mean that ground forces can take them out with reasonable prospects of success, drones mean air delivered anti tank is now cheap

Don’t ask what they can do to the tank, ask what the tank can do for them. Tanks are vulnerable to so many weapons because they are so dangerous, currently nothing can match the capabilities of a tank. If you want to destroy things artillery is an option, if you want to move fast on the ground you have the APC and truck and if you want to be armored then a bunker would do just as well, the problem is when you wanted to do all of these thing at once, then thats where the tank comes into play.

Inner mortar is exist, but this is just another feature which could be removed or installed.
