In this video, we dive into the current state of AMD’s Radeon GPU division and the broader implications for the gaming market. I’m not tied to any one company, but I’m a big advocate for healthy market competition. When competition thrives, we get better products and pricing. However, the GPU market is feeling particularly lopsided these days, and it might get worse with AMD potentially stepping back from certain segments. In this discussion, we’ll explore AMD’s recent revenue decline, the impact of lower console sales, and how Nvidia’s dominance is affecting AMD. We’ll also consider the future of AMD’s RDNA architecture and what it means for gamers and the industry. Join me as we break down these developments and their potential consequences for the gaming GPU landscape.

It doesn't matter if AMD is on the market because all they do is blindly follow Nvidia's prices. This is no longer a competition this is just a duopoly where one corporation is setting more and more stupid prices and the second one follows. The best example would be the xx80 which went from $700 to $1200 while AMD is present on the market. And what AMD did do? Released its counterpart at $1000. LOL Without Ray/Path tracing, without CUDA, etc the market above $600 is not for AMD and they know this. They have to focus on the med/low-end and improve upscaling.

Steam will never see the 4K tv I game on since it's off everytime it asks me for surveys. On that note, you don't need a 4K capable gpu to enjoy 4KTV couch gaming anyway. It's always a bit sad to hear this argument all the time, it's like the years of DLSS improvements never happened or even basic upscaling doesn't exist and doesn't look pretty good on a big TV or a 4K monitor with ridiculous PPI anyway, or that the only games people play are AAA slop and not indies games that run on toasters at 16K if you want to. I understand you just say this to make a point about the market, but people these days really do believe 4K displays can only work properly with a 4090.

Extremely low cost is stretching it consider FSR is still looks worse than DLSS performance at Quality setting, DLSS is an indirect performance advantage that people just don't think about. And buying used at a cheap price can hardly be attributed to considering AMD pricing as "extremely low".

In this economy, I do not see either Nivida or AMD doing good. People can barely afford food and rent and GPUs are the least of peoples worries. Plus, Covid played a big part of Both companies' success Due to lack of stock and materials. If Nivida hasn't opened their mouths about it, it will soon come. They cannot keep prices high on GPUs, they need to realist about pricing. Nobody should be buying a 4090 to just play games. If you are, then you are allowing Nivida to keep getting away with these dirty business dealings.

To be fair RT being such a performance killer even for Nvidia GPU's today made the RX 7000 series passable, all they should have done was to offer reasonable prices in 2023. With that being said, if AMD doesn't step up it's game in RT, buying radeon GPU's will be a hard pass for many, since the titles using that feature will just increase in the future. So they better work on that for RDNA 5 or radeon GPU's won't sell well either, making current sales number look excellent in comparison.

Here is the major issue with this video: most people buy in the mid range which is 300-600 range and no gpu in these price tiers can do ray tracing well enough for it to be a feature in a gpu you have to have to buy it. Rasterization is king in this price range. DLSS if you have to turn it on to get playable frame rates in your chosen game or games then you didn’t buy a powerful enough GPU to begin with. DLSs is a “feature” and its competitor FSR are gimmicks so the gpu manufacturers don’t have to provide a good generation uplift in their next generations. RTX 4060 and 4060 ti are proof of this as well as the 7800 XT and 7700 xt

I always felt like AMD in the GPU PC space was an off-brand GPU maker. Not as good as Nvidia but great value for close to the expected performance. But AMD got a bit big headed and pricing their GPUs as Nvidia and I feel that's killing them as people usually choose AMD for bang per buck but if you're paying $1000 for a 4080 super or7900xtx for example, the smartest buy is going for the 4080 super. Sure, you lose 5-8% in raster, but the double digits gain in RT and well supported in other content creation applications it's a no brainer buys. If RDNA5 and later being a clean sheet redesign, why not change names altogether to make eventual Zen moment of GPUs? I mean would the architecture name Val better than RDNA? Maybe each generation shall and should have other codenames for successive generations in the way EPYC server CPUs give their names based on Italian cities. So why not RDNA5 and later give the same treatment for gaming and workstation cards? Maybe Spanish and Portuguese cities and towns (and landmarks) makes a lot of sense. So branding, why not call next Radeon change to Valkyrie and Valhalla? Cuz Zen is like mythic. RDNA5 and successors why not give codename like Sevilla or Porto?

it depends on the "customers", you can't generalize. For example, I know someone, when available he chose the "best of the best" : 7950X3D + ASUS RTX 4090; and another one : he stayed with its 3800X and bought a RX 6750XT. Later, he could upgrade to a 5800X3D, or (probably better) : 9600XT (Zen 5), with the possibility, later to upgrade to a 11800X3D (Zen 6 X3D) and a RX 9700XT (RDNA 5). Personally, I chose to upgrade to a RTX 4090 FE (keeping my 5600X) instead of a 5800X3D + 7900XTX, because (Saphire brand) : the combo Sapphire 7900XTX + 5800 X3D cost (in 2023) more than the RTX 4090 FE alone, and, at that time, the Sapphire was too big to enter in my case.) Finally, my next update is going to be a big one : Zen 6 X3D (or Panther Lake, if it worth it) and RTX 6090 (or RDNA 5, if it worth it)... time will tell in around 30 months, from now... EDIT : can -> can't 😅

It is rumoured that AMD has ditched the high end and enthusiast class segment for RDNA 4. However, if it ends up being super competitive in the entry level and midrange segments, then it could put a lot of pressure on Nvidia and hopefully convince them to pack significantly more processing power into their entry level and midrange GPUs for reasonable prices. After RDNA 4 and Battlemage, RDNA 5 and Celestial should be expected to launch after that, not too far after. AMD is expected to return to the high end and enthusiast class segment with RDNA 5, and Celestial shouldn't be too far away from launching then as well. They reckon Intel will compete in the high end and enthusiast class with Celestial, which should bring the heat to Nvidia and AMD, so hopefully there will be strong competition in the gaming GPU market within a few years.

One of amd biggest problems is that they dont have Ai based temporal upscaling, i have a 6700xt and i can say fsr2 is not bad at all, however in most reviews , the reviewers will keep saying dlss is superior to fsr. This damages the perception of radeon cards. In the case of the 7900xtx gamers will choose a 4080 instead , since it has better ray tracing , better temporal upscaling with dlss. Amd could offset this by selling the 7900xtx cheaper , but they dont want to reduce the price. Even intel xess is Ai based, so Amd needs to quickly inplement Ai upscaling and they also need to improve frame generation and raytracing , i heard Ai upscaling is coming in rdna4 cards For rdna 5 Amd needs to anticipate nvidia strategy of moving the goal post , nvidia will come with some new technology again like Ai generated particle movement or Ai sound when Amd finally catches up in ray tracing and ai upscaling. Amd should also consider inplementing workstation features in their highest end gaming cards. This way a developer or professional creator can just purchase 1 card and be able do everything , further adding to its perceived value.

"AI based." Define AI based. If we are talking a lot of matrix if-then (it is), AMD has it. _inplementing workstation features in their highest end gaming cards...just purchase 1 card and be able do everything , further adding to its perceived value_ What value? A pro will buy a pro card because of strict rendering and drivers. What you are suggesting is getting the prosumer onboard. Those software packages are all CUDA anyway. So what then? Better idea to add ROCm support (all features) to all consumer cards (some cards support some stuff as it is now), just like ECC on every Ryzen cpu, then make support unofficial and give 0 guarantees while convincing every software maker to add ROCm support.

@jamegumb7298 I believe he means using better AI accelerators for upscaling as that is why XESS and DLSS have an advantage in resolution upscaling quality. Whatever Nvidia sponsored game devs support (DLLS, raytracing), its important mainly general gpu support and raster performance. I would just remind that probably very high percent of players and gaming hours are into online competitive games, where is most important compatibility and driver stability, which AMD offers pretty well. Need to say that there are online channels which focus on AMD drivers releases incl list of bug fixes and improvements. While it may look AMD Radeon gpus/drivers are full of bugs, Nvidia does not have that much of drivers publicity. Long term AMD shareholder: Console and GPU sales are always down Q1/Q2 except after the new console gen. This is not suprising and no doomsday sign. Lisa Su explicitly said so 2020-2021 repeatedly. There is also a lack of AAA games, that makes GPUs/consoles a really tough sale, especially during summer. There is way to much doomsday fear on the hardware enthusiast scene, it's really the software side. AMDs APUs do well, consoles had an okay start (PS5 = PS4 sales, initial XBOX One was the same trainwreck like XS). Yeah RDNA3 was a bummer. yeah they cancelled high end RDNA4. But that's because it was never gamers that bought these high VRAM chips. CUDA (engineering, devs, robotics and AI) was the major selling point. I know companies that put gamer card 2070 into production machines (x-ray machines, hundreds of thousand and even millions per machine for multi million dollar production lines) with it's compute vision capabilities. The pro drivers/higher quality silicon isn't worth it for many companies. Gamers don't buy these $1000 cards. That's why scalpers got away with premiums as well. That's why Nvidia gimps the shit out of the VRAM section. Otherwise companies would buy 4050s for $300 and call it a day.

Just to show how bad AMD not being competitive is, think about what Nvidia has been able to do. Their flagships used to be on the 100 die. Not the 102, the 100. The biggest dies in their lineup. And come in for $1K give or take, *IF* they happened to be *Titan* models. Their 80 class card used to be anywhere from 10% to 30% when it came to performance of their top chips, and pretty much always had an MSRP that was 50% less than their flagships. Now they are coming in on 103 dies, or what would have been a 70 and/or 70Ti class die, and in the case of the upcoming 5080 may not even match a 4090 while having 50% less VRAM. I've heard some really dumb things like _"People will be so happy to get 4090 performance for $1000 USD"_ and think _"Wow, that sucks, why would anyone be happy about that?"_ It would mean that the rumors are true, and the 5080 will probably be around 45% slower than the 5090. The 70 class card has perpetually met or exceeded the performance of the previous year's flagship for 1/3 the price, and now we are looking at an 80 class being about the same speed for a fricken grand (probably more, but we'll see I guess)? Who in their right mind would possibly be happy about that? Yes, it makes sense from Nvidia's P.O.V.. The department of defense or wtv won't let Nvidia sell cards over a certain amount of TFlops to China, but if that's the case then China should be getting 5070's as there is no reason people int he US should get f'd too. It is great for Nvidia. They can continue to make 100%+ margins on smaller dies, but wow does it suck for people like myself who are only in the market for one of the top two cards. If the 5080 performs like a 4090, I'm good, meaning I am only in the market for one card. A card I presume will run me $2K if I sleep in the Best Buy parking lot and get a reference model. If AMD were coming out with a high end card that didn't tank the minute you turned RT on in single player games that make use of hardware based RT, there's a very good chance I'd buy one as opposed to dealing with Nvidia's gang molestation of their consumers. They aren't, and unfortunately, the 3080FE I have is on it's last 1440P w/quality upscaling legs, and using RT at a level where you can notice an improvement over regular shadow maps is pretty much out of the question at this point due to the VRAM limitations. Speaking of which... If the 5080 really only has 16GB of VRAM, it's probably only going to be a 1440P ultra texture card for another four years, with native 4K having maybe 2 years left at 16GB of video memory. With the way games are optimized now, I just can't see 16GB lasting at 4K all that long at this point. Case and point being games like RE or The Last of Us. Then you look at a game like Senua's Sacrifice and you can tell that it is an optimization issue, as the former is using 8-9GB of video memory at 4K, maxed out with RT on! Natively!?! But how many studios are going to take that much time to optimize their games like that? Not many, which unfortunately leads to having to brute force our way through things on PC. It's ridiculous, but at best we are looking at 4 years until the next consoles release with 24GB+, at which point 16GB will probably be more of an issue than 8GB is now, as less and less optimization is put into 1080P. A card that is probably going to cost more than $1K being midrange two years after release. That's what not having competition does, and AMD really didn't compete this gen. Their card design failed, which they readily admit, and they ignored raytracing too long which absolutely bit them in the ass. Yes, they had high-end cards, but they were missing high-end features, and with the majority of people who buy top end GPU's every few years being single player gamers (yeah yeah, I know most people who stream multiplayer games have high-end GPUs, but most people don't stream and the vast majority of people playing Fortnite or CoD don't need a new 80 class or better card every 2 years), AMD *NEEDS* to have the ability to take advantage of tech that makes the games look better. Otherwise, what's the point of buying an expensive GPU? Just run your 5700XT into the ground in that case... Speaking of which; Even when RT isn't feasible, having the features available still makes a difference. The 5700XT was so, so much better than the 2060/Super, but the darn 2060's still smashed the 5700/XT in sales even as they were both selling for around $300-$350. That is so bad, and probably would not have happened if AMD had had anything for the Pascal generation to compete at the high-end. They lost so much mind share because of the 970, 980Ti, 1070, 1080 and 1080Ti it is ridiculous. Not having a high-end presence is just going to make things even more difficult moving forward. Maybe if they could find a way to let normal people know that they are the ones powering consoles it would help, but for some reason that's out of the question apparently. The only other thing I can think of is finding a way to get into *affordable* gaming laptops while blowing everyone away with their midrange performance this gen at a low-end price, which I'm not sure they can do since I expect everything to go up, again, due to new tariffs Biden just signed against Chinese goods. The $20K EUV's that we were supposed to get will now be $40K, f'ing the middle class buyer who can't afford a Tesla or US electric vehicle, but that certainly isn't the only thing affected. Not just cheap basic Chinese chips either, bc of course it isn't. Nope, they are raising import taxes on everything down to the darn MOSFETs by up to 100%, bc of course they are. Replacement lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles are not affected though, so if youo already own an electric Porsche, don't worry, Biden is keeping your prices in check...I'll stop bitching here before I go off on a tangent about the economy, our Gini-Coefficient, the Shareholder Revolution Acts of 1978, and how only 29 out of the 2,791 billionaires world-wide ever lived under the US poverty line (only two are from the US) ;^) .

It's well deserved on AMD, that's what they get for following Nvidia's pricing instead of choosing reasonable price points for their models.

AMD's working on a RDNA5 thats supposed to be a beast, just because they are releasing mid range crap this time around doesn't mean that they are giving up, AMD's trying to fix their RT game, hence why the next cards have an RT improvement with about the same performance in raster supposedly. Also console and handheld devices are down in sales due to less demand which is AMD's main gaming cash cow.

I agree. AMD is skipping high end 8000 series GPUs for a reason. But even midrange 8000 series will be capable enough at a price per performance much better than NVidia. And with 9000 series AMD will be returning. I am not saying they will beat rtx 6000 series flagship by raw performance but by price per performance and they will have a much better raytracing performance too. Considering how good 7900xtx is running all current games at 4K of course 9000 series performance will be more than enough.

nvidia still needs those "gaming GPU" so they can trap more people towards their CUDA ecosystem. it is part of nvidia long term plan since they first unveil CUDA back in 2006. right now look at nvidia revenue. they are reaping the benefit from that long term strategy right now.

Radeon went broke behind the books in q3 2023 and I've continued to report on this Chapter 11 reorg as all know. q4 2023 I attributed AMD Graphics sales to Sony console dev and also in q1 2024 that paid for 12 M RDNA lV dGPU kits that if correct, and Sony NRE has paid for AMD component production in period before, Radeon continues as an exchange value to throw in with Ryzen CPU as sales close incentive; price at cost. mb

Nvidia doing what with Blackwell, monitor mike has a pretty good idea and has been explaining this but like taking time to look also means taking time to listen. TSMC 4NP depreciated cost as an AIB wide bus, more VRAM, equals more traces and layers on the pendulum swing back from Ada mobile dGPU design generation made for Intel Raptor and Dragon H attach back to GB desktop design generation eventually game land will figure out that my crystal ball is generations ahead. mb
@mikebruzzone9570
@mikebruzzone9570 Ай бұрын
So Blackwell kit should be priced no more of less than Ada to the AIB and that difference can be relied as a card design production cost offset and behind the scenes I've advocated appeasing game land so we don't have to listen to more gamer whin. mb

AMD stepping away from the high end *temporarily" was so they could repurpose those employees working on that project to RDNA4 so that they could advance the timeline to finish and release it sooner. It will be a good thing for the "average" GPU consumer because AMD will finally be forced to compete hard at the mid-range, where most buyers are squarely focused anyway. Besides the leaks that claimed that the RDNA4 high end cards were so massive and were going to cost a lot to make, if AMD doesn't have software that entirely completes with what nVidia offers, why would anyone pay that much for it. nVIDIA won't really be able to charge "whatever they want" for the 5090 (even though the price will likely increase 50% over the 4090, which I bet nVIDIA wishes they would have done for the 4090) because the 5090 will have to compete with RDNA5 at some point in it's life cycle; RDNA5 will be launched way before a 6090 is ready. I think one thing AMD realized (about a year ago) is that the 5000 series designs were decided on before the crypto crash, and nVIDIA had pigeon-hold themselves with way too little VRAM in the low end and mid-range. AMD on the other hand will be willing to offer more VRAM with RDNA4, so it makes sense to fight there; VRAM is cheap, and the competition at this level will drive down prices for nVIDIA's cards. With AMD focusing on monolithic designs for RDNA4, I don't know that nVIDIA will really be able to hold on to the efficiency advantage either...
@arenzricodexd4409
@arenzricodexd4409 Ай бұрын
just because RDNA 4 not pushing for high end stuff means RDNA 5 will coming sooner. AMD already delay the release of cards like 7800XT by 9 months. in china AMD end up delaying 7600XT 16GB release because they still want to give partner the chance to clear those 6700 GRE without having to sell them below MSRP. if anything AMD most likely going to extend RDNA 3 life cycle further and will only launch RDNA 4 sometime next year. RDNA 5 most likely coming out around the same time as nvidia 60 series.
