We've been taught the U.S was isolationist until the 20th century when in actuality we were far more expansive before that. The foreign lands? Our homes.

Finals suck. Hey everyone. AlternateHistoryHub hasn't had much content lately because of 1) school (which just ended) and 2) this new video I've been working on. It's basically the next step for both channels in terms of quality. Alternate history is also about creativity and imagining another world. The new phase of both channels will to be more professionally edited and better graphics. Learning curves take time and effort to overcome and now that school is done I can finish up the project. Get ready to see a flood of new content in the next few weeks as the dam (this video) will burst and I can get everything finally released. Thanks for your patience

This video fails to mention the single most important part of Manifest Destiny: having both an Atlantic and a Pacific coast is strategically significant. Being able to sail from New York to France and also from California to asian and oceanic countries was what early settlers aspired to be able to do. After all, someone discovered the continent trying to get to India in the first place.

Well, cars would be all electric, power generation would be all nuclear, coal, solar, and wind. (France has this) Planes would be propeller driven off of batteries (not actually a good idea right now), and everything currently made of plastic would instead have to be made out of metal and/or glass. Unfortunately some things like asphalt, industrial lubricants, and jet fuel have no easy replacement, so we'll need oil for a long time to come, but only ~20% of what we use now after ground transportation and heating is made electric.

Spain is allowed to rise back up from its own ashes since the Spanish-American war doesn't occur where they were beat back down into the ashes and stomped on for good measure. Much of South, Central and North America either is later retaken or remain a part of Spain. England gains complete trade control in the Western Hemisphere. Washington and Oregon become part of the region of Canada. Canada would not obtain autonomy and remain a "colony". The native people's will come once in a while to raid American settlements taking prisoners and mutilating them. As what happened in lands that became the frontier. The biggest change this would make at around the timeline is of course as I stated Spain. This adds a new dynamic to world history as it is one more power taking colonies and industrializing. If WWI still occurs then the Central Powers would not be the only ones fighting in a two front war but also the Triple Entente if Spain sides with the Central Powers (which they would have been likelier to do due to border tension). The Louisiana Purchase is not purchased and would either remain with France, given back to Spain or either taken from France by Britain or bought from Spain to Britain. Japan is not forced to open its borders, remains isolationist and does not industrialize faster or to a greater extent than other Asian countries. It also retains its culture and without greater technology would not have been able to invade China in WWII.

+SUM1 Yeah, but if America never became a super power, it would probably have just been Britain, Russia, or Nazi Germany doing the exact same things (or worse... LOOKING AT YOU STALIN AND HITLER!). I mean, a huge part of America doing those terrible things was to counter the USSR's ever increasing reach.

The problem with your "the USA has never been isolationist" is that the isolation they wanted was from *Europe*, not North America. Thus, the Monroe Doctrine.
@takethefall4782
@takethefall4782 7 жыл бұрын
People jump to the assumption that 'isolationism' must be mutually exclusive to 'pacifism', which it's not. They were not concerned about who it 'favored' to whoever they 'entangled' with in Europe relations centuries if not millennial old. They did not take French or Spanish territory to favor Britain. They did not take British territory to favor France. Nor did they take Russian territory to favor Japan. It was the USA starting fresh with itself prioritized, first and last.
@theformalmooshroom9147
@theformalmooshroom9147 6 жыл бұрын
The isolationism is isolation from war, not economics. They, the Americans, wanted to trade with the Europeans but not be involved in all the wars that went on. Much like everyone else, except for the purchasing part, they took what they could take because they could take it; that is within reason of course.

I do think that when most people refer to “American isolationism” they really mean isolated from European conflict because the world was Eurocentric. We simply avoided conflict. For example we fought Spain but it was in our seas and Western Hemisphere and kicked them out. It’s why we monroe doctrines the hemisphere and looked back east and said “no.”

No Free Will 1917 maybe but the US was at war in the Philippines from 1899-1902. Real non-interventionism (since the US has never been truly isolationist, just non-interventionist at times) seems to be the period right after the Filipino US war - right before WW1 and then again throughout most of the 1930s (excluding things like lend lease)

@ubikromano4793
@ubikromano4793 7 жыл бұрын
I think that the term "isolationism" used in the context of american foreign politicies was primarly referred to the the relationships between the USA and the European countries. In this sense, we can agree that the Usa had little interest in getting involved in the European politics before 1917, while the very same term is not supported by the overall foreign politicies, as you pointed out in the video, having the US shown expansion interests in the american continent and even in Asia (the Philippines-American War in 1902). I think that this is due to the fact that the guidelines in american foreign policies had been shapen in the 18th century by the solemn prohibition to avoid any permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world, especially with the European countries, as stated in the farewell address by George Washington. But when president Woodrow Wilson decided to involve the Us army in the first world war in a permanent alliance, and to take a dominant role to reshape the european borders after the war, that outdated view of the foreign affairs had been irredeemably compromised, having the Us taken an hegemonic role in the development of European politics.

I would also argue in terms of America not being isolationist that the US has always participated in affairs across the globe, the US were the ones who eliminated the Barbary pirates, they opened Japan (which truly was an isolationist country, the US (Teddy!) ended the Russo-Japanese war, and fought the Spanish American war all the way in Philippines. There was never anything isolationist or even non-interventionist about Americas foreign policy.

Here's something for you Americans, the Treaty of Waitangi (signed by the Maori Chiefs and the UK crown basically allowing the British to take take control of New Zealand- there's more to it but that's the gist of it) this was a first by the British Empire to sign a treaty with the natives. This is because they were scared that the French or Americans would claim the territory. They even moved the capital from Auckland to Wellington to stop the South Island becoming a separate colony and falling under the influence of the French or Americans. It's weird to think that I could be speaking French or currently be an American citizen if things went a little differently.

It was the Declaration of Independence that was made to stop the French, which was lucky for the Maori as it meant they were technically a "sovereign nation", so no-one could just claim them anymore, instead needing a treaty. Thank goodness for that scaredy-cat Busby and the strangely conscience-driven Foreign Secretary.

*I also don't understand why Freemasons and how they helped shaped USA isn't teach in school. Can you make a video like this on it?* As a mason, I'm kinda tired of most people learning about Freemasons only from nut jobs. A lot of how the USA works (courts, representatives for each area, a public education system (we created the first public libraries and museums) and so on) was heavily influenced or model after Freemasons. (No we don't have any control over anything. Hint why I said influenced or modeled after.) While it's towards the darker end of our history, check out the first 3rd party within the USA. If you do this, and you have any questions. Please feel free to let me know. My e-mail is on the about section of my channel.

Maldives Ball I wouldn't say right wing. I found it's both sides. I also found it's almost every religion. With that being said, I think the reason why people believe the goat, devil worship, blood oath, take of the world, it's a religion lies from nut jobs. It's simply because that's literally all the info most people get on Freemasons. Even the biggest lie that Freemasons is a secret society can be debunk with how in the public masons are. But people believe it is because that's all they are told. So I don't really blame the people. I blame the educational system for not doing their 1 and only job. I know when I was high school, I learned more about Greek gods and myths than how America got out of the great depression. (I went to one of the top 5 HS in the nation, and I didn't know who Teddy Roosevelt was because learning about the odyssey was more important (a good, but pointless book that can't help you in your life and only has entertainment value)). Like it would've been cool to known that back in the mid evil time there was a group that called themselves the Oculus. Their main reason for being around is to standardize eye surgery, and anything to do with that. There is thousands of these groups out through history, and there is still tons of them today. None of them are harmful, but I think people growing up should know there tends to be a dozen or so guilds, clubs, and societies they can join that could help them on the job (like learning about things, getting connections, or just encouraging others to learn more). While Freemasons won't help you advance on your career and what not. How Freemasons started was yet another group around a giving profession. Anyways, that's why I'm asking this channel owner to do a video on it.

Ok, I got a question. So, I was always under the impression (being a non-US citizen) that Isolationist USA was more of a politic in compliance with Manifest Destiny, one that saw the US conquer its own lands and avoid European topics and affairs (thus why it was an Isolationist). Basically, isn't Isolationism deeply rooted in the US's lack of involvement in European affairs and keeping to its own continent alone? Manifest Destiny and the Pioneers fit into the Isolationism perspective as such because they only sought the Western American lands and little to no interaction with the Europeans. (also, I feel that the definition of an Empire changed following the Cold War - both the US and the USSR were considered to be empires along with world powers more because of the power they held and the influence they had to the rest of the world, compared to just how much land they owned like old empires, like the English - and, with the collapse of the USSR, the US was left the last true superpower/empire in the world)

You're correct. Whenever someone mentions an isolationist American, most people correctly assume they mean in regards to the Old World. And while there are plenty of times this still isn't the case, I would still feel as though it is generally right. Cody just completely seems to have missed that memo

TraitorGG The United States did, in many ways, try and stay out of Europe up until World War 1. A theme that's seen consistently in American history is the relationship between neutrality during war and its impact on trade. However, periods of conflict with Europe before World War 1 can not be denied such as the U.S. Imperialism during the Spanish-American War. The possibility of British support of the Confederate States during the Civil War is also a big one.

@YooTooLoB
@YooTooLoB 7 жыл бұрын
Cortster Nope, North America (north of America) is a subcontinent within America. America is the name giving to the new world by the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespucci. In fact, the name of America was first used to refer to what's know known as South America, but it is still used yo refer to the whole continent in different languages like Spanish or French. Even the Wikipedia article in the Americas has "America" as a correct synonym. The United States of America is meant to represent several states, which are united, in the continent of America, it is not meant to represent the whole continent. Yes, people wrongly refer to it as a short form for the USA, but that doesn't make it accurate and it's a way if referring to it that only some people in the English speaking world use, almost everyone else understands that America is meant to represent a continent, not a country.
@cortster12
@cortster12 7 жыл бұрын
+Daphne V en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Americas en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_(disambiguation) In short, it's actually called the Americas (because it is two continents, not one) in most situations. And America is, for the most part, shorthand for the USA. So it doesn't get confusing unless you make it confusing.
@YooTooLoB
@YooTooLoB 7 жыл бұрын
Cortster from your first link: " The Americas, also collectively called *America*" From you second link: " America or América may also refer to: The Americas, a landmass comprising the continents of North and South America". If you look at "America" in other languages look at what you find: Spanish es.wikipedia.org/wiki/América "it's the second largest *continent* on Earth" claims the article. Portuguese : pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/América. French : fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amérique. German : de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerika. Dutch : nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amerika_(continent) etc. Almost every language accepts "America" as the name if the continent comprised by North and South America. From the Wikipedia article on the word "American": en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_(word) " In modern English, Americans generally refers to someone or something related to the United States of America; among native English speakers this usage is almost universal, with any other use of the term requiring specification. However, this usage is seen by some as a semantic "misappropriation" by those who argue that "American" should be widened in English to also include people or things from anywhere in the *American continent*.". There are even organizations that use "American" in a continental matter, like the Organization of *American* States m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organization_of_American_States which comprised several countries within America. Now, the usage if "American" to refer to US citizens is correct, and is universally accepted when speaking in English, but to refer to the country as America is another issue, and it's highly inaccurate.
