The Civil War didn't just happen out of thin air, it was an ideological divide decades in the making. In an age of slavery the results were surprisingly morally grey as little did either side care truly for the rights of the slaves.

Jimmy Hall - The civil war was about the state's right to slavery. Other issues didn't really play a role.
@NESOAries
@NESOAries 6 жыл бұрын
SpoopySquid The civil war was about, in the most basic concept, the war to decide where state rights end. The concept that it was due to slavery is partially true, but not the entire story. The south also wanted low import tariffs, as their tax money generally came from goods they import and manufacture in state. While in the north, they wanted to have a high import tax so that their businesses could keep up with the rapidly modernizing European powers. This was solved during the civil war, when the north was forced to modernize.
@Nebukadnezzer
@Nebukadnezzer 6 жыл бұрын
CapitalistAries - The war revolved around the issue of states' right to slavery. Not tariffs, taxes or "states rights" in general. I notice that the _yeah-slavery-was-a-big-issue-but-it-wasn't-exclusively-about-slavery_ sophism is gaining traction. It is intended to rewrite history and dilute the real cause of the war: the abolition of slavery.

In case some of you didn't know, the guys behind HBOs game of thrones adaptation are planning to make a new show called Confederate once GOT ends. It would be an alternate history senerio set after the south won its independence. Something kinda head scratching is that supposedly one of the main plots involves institutionalized slavery surviving until the modern day

See dude. You can be a nice and reasonable leftist (judging from your political compass dp) but your people will never be satisfied with what is deemed fair. It must always benefit one group of people over others. Come to the right, we're more welcoming of minorities and aren't concerned about "my reparations" or what happened in the past but instead of what will happen in the future. Once you're here I assure you that we are nowhere as racist or bigotted as we are portrayed as. We use logic instead of feelings of empathy, that will undoubtedly upset some because of how useless they are to society (with rational thought stripping them of their facade) but we don't care, we're here to do what's best for the nation and not make reparations for past deeds. If you wanted true equality where we look past race onto your ability, based solely on merit instead of the color of your skin, come to the right

@cameron - For accuracy and clarity in USA political/governmental/historical discussions, it is often better to use terms like "liberal" and "conservative" rather than party labels such as "Democratic" or "Republican". It was "conservatives" who were the slaver terrorists. It was "conservatives" who wrote a "terrorist welfare benefit" into the constitution which encouraged slaver terrorism and rewarded the terrorists with excessive national governmental power. (a.k.a. - The Electoral College + the 3/5ths rule.) It was "conservatives" who made a lame attempt at forming a separate country based solely on terrorism. The csa. It was "conservatives" who brought genocide to the American First Nations. It was "conservatives" who formed the kkk and similar terrorist gangs. It was "conservatives" who wrote the terroristic Jim Crow laws. It was "conservatives" who tortured and lynched blacks for "entertainment". It was/is "conservatives" who honor their "Heritage OF Hate". It was "conservatives" who became so butt-hurt about losing their welfare benefit they went to war to preserve the "free stuff" awarded to terrorists(slavers). The csa. It was "conservatives" who were so ashamed of their terrorist crimes against humanity they revised their history books and invented "the lost cause" fairy tale to deflect attention away from their terrorism. It was "conservatives" who invented "Manifest Destiny" in a lame attempt to justify their genocide. It was "conservatives" who erected loser trophies and monuments to honor csa terrorists and csa terrorism. It was/is "conservatives" who attempt(ed) to hide their terroristic greed under the guise of "patriotism" and "christianity".

They showed some morons ripping down confederate monuments on the news today, destroying them. I'm British, I dislike America in general and ideologically disagree with the Confederacy and have no reason to like them, but as a history buff I cannot abide or forgive the destruction of historic monuments and artifacts. I can't believe there are people who look at the American Civil war and think they have some free reign to erase references to it. I know this rant isn't tied directly to the video, but it is related to the subject and I need to get it out of my system because the history buff in me needs closure.

They're from Antifa mate...Terrorist organization that calls anyone that isn't in support of their far left anarcho-communist ideology where free speech must be revoked. What did you expect from them? They're the reason Neo-Nazi's are increasing in popularity, it's scarily similar to the Weimar Republic. Much as I hate Neo-Nazi's they did have a legal permit to protest there atnifa like always didn't and came there like always armed and looking for a fight
@MrJoeyWheeler

Yeah, I kinda guessed just from the news report who they were. They didn't want to say WHO it was, as is typical, and the news only interviewed people who approved of removing the things. I do not have much hope for civilization right now. People who are fairly in the middle politically get pushed more and more to one side or the other and it's getting more violent year after year.If there's one thing I can hate people like Antifa for, beyond the destruction of history, it's forcing me to have to sympathise with other people I despise simply because I need to defend their rights to be recognised, have a history, and express themselves.

the destruction of monuments is not to erase the history of it but instead to get rid of monuments built to praise racists built during the Jim Crow era to intimidate blacks. General Robert E. Lee even said that no statues of the Confederacy should ever be built and the living relatives of Stonewall Jackson want to see the statues torn down. They aren't there for any reason other than to glorify groups that shouldn't be glorified and to intimidate racial minorities in those areas.

Don't really matter? One of the Union's best generals was George Thomas from Virginia. Great video. The only quibble I have is with saying Lincoln wanted to deport former slaves. While that was a popular solution, nationally, by mid-century, it had pretty much died out. Read Lincoln's Ottawa Speech in 1858, he details the cruelty and logistical impossibility in doing so. He later wanted to offer voluntary placement to former slaves because he was worried about how they would be treated by the country. Also, in his final speech he advocated for public education for blacks and black voting rights.

@ the Super J @Quinn Well put Quinn and it is largely reflective of what were to happen if the minorities continue pushing the buttons of the whites. As a minority (Chinese) in the US, it seems utterly ridiculous that the minorities in the US would continuously attempt to screw with the whites over. They were what brought America to the power it is today and still hold tremendous power, it is frankly insane that the blacks in particular would go out of their way to directly screw with the whites considering that their freedom in america is solely due to the whites fighting for them in the first place. Not sure about your culture but in Asian culture, if someone helps us, we don't fucking stab them in the back less than 200 years later if ever; that is some ungrateful behavior to say the least. So if avoiding civil war is in America's best interest, it would do best to remind some of the ungrateful minorities out there (the blacks and an increasing number of hispanics) that perhaps toning down on their aggressive attitudes would be in their best interest. The last thing we minorities need is some white hitler (no trump isn't actually hitler) to sweep in and fuck us all over. I can only speak for my race but some of us minorities just want a place to contribute to society and earn those sweet sweet greenbacks. America has and always will be a white man's country - since we are merely being hosted by them, some appreciation for how far they have brought america would be prudent. Also, don't look at how some minorities are "mistreated" (I assure you if they were not doing what they were, they would not have had any trouble) in the US because it is honestly the only country that is successful enough to entertain the bs constantly thrown at it by some of the bad sheep. If the stereotypical blacks or native americans were as lazy as they were made out to be in any Asian country, I guarantee you, we would have absolutely no qualms about hacking up the whole lot and feeding them to the pigs. The fact that some of the minority scum of society leeching off welfare payments are still alive and well literally proves that the whites aren't fucking racist. I have absolutely no clue where the idea that they are racist comes from. It is perfectly normal to have prejudices built on personal experience, like I wouldn't want my kids to marry outside their race not because I hate a certain color but simply because the culture is too damn different for me to see a long-lasting marriage - it doesn't make me a racist for pointing out that observation, it would be more racist to hold back that observation because of some misguided belief that a certain race of people were lower than me and highlighting it would somehow cement that notion despite the fact that you had already thought of it. The next time people claim that the whites are racist, ask yourself why on earth is it that we Asians (us stereotypical yellow asians in case some liberal decides to extend this to include the middle easterns), don't seem to get into any trouble with the law? We huddle down, pride ourselves on education and literally avoid all sorts of bad company, if there's any sort of crime, we're not going to be anywhere near it so we don't get shot. We're now the richest race on gdp/capita in the US, if that doesn't speak of opportunity free of racial prejudice, I don't know what does. Perhaps the problem lies not with the white man being racist but instead with certain and very specific minorities always being fucked up. Just some food for thought. If that issue of supposed racism is resolved, America will move forward as a country but till then, people seem hell bent on rioting for the sole purpose of wanting to "make a difference" when the difference that they make is for the worse. Its also hilarious how such riots barely affect the productivity of the nation as a whole considering how much useless scum are in the streets screaming for chance when it is they that is fucked up. I would hate for a race based-civil war because it would undoubtedly affect our ability to just cruise along and earn money from both sides but you have to be absolutely retarded to believe that pissing off the whites would be a good idea. If a civil war does occur and we as Asians aren't implicated in the backlash against minorities, then I think it would be an excellent proposition because the left will get their asses handed to them and the average productivity of the nation would increase exponentially. Its high time some of these liberal arts clowns get pulverized in they seem so hell bent on provoking. Now I don't know if you're a liberal or a conservative but if you're a liberal, take note that as conservatives, we have all the guns and literally the entire military (maybe not the POG cunts but when have they ever done anything useful) at our back so any shit you start, we will finish by flattening you. If you are a conservative, welcome to the club I guess

I've always had a hard time buying the war over slavery angle. Then a teacher pointed out the "confederate" point, the southern states wanted to remain independent states with a loose "confederacy" and the northern states wanted a more unified single nation. I can't argue that slavery was not an issue, but I can't accept it as the main reason for the war.
@erraticonteuse
@erraticonteuse 4 жыл бұрын
What's so hard to believe about it? Slavery was the backbone of their economy, the majority of the South's net worth was in its 4 million slaves (each one of which was worth about as much as a car is today), followed by land (which was only productive/profitable because of the slaves who worked it). Then a guy whose *stated position* was, "I want to prevent you from taking your economic model elsewhere, which I hope will cause it to stagnate and ultimately crash and die," got elected President. This was also the first time a President had been elected without carrying a single southern state. So their national political influence (which they wanted/needed to protect their "property rights") was functionally dead and their economy was under direct threat from the highest office in the land. Why is it so hard to believe that they would want split from the country in order to protect the source of all their wealth?

Read Exodus 21, it directs you how to own and treat slaves and this isn't the only place in the bible that condones slavery. Let's not pretend that the vast majority of people supporting slavery were also using the bible's instructions because they absolutely were.

One minor point : while it was brought up that slavery was critical to the economic future of the south, removal of slavery was also critical to the economic future of the north. The two economies were diverging in terms of their needs and growth criteria and had become mutually exclusive.

Slavery was pretty much the biggest cause. The South desperately wanted to protect it because it brought the wealthy land owners so much profit and status. They felt that slave ownership was a right protected by the Constitution and that ending it was a form of oppression.
@stormbringer2189

Matthew Slavery was the lynching pin, slave state free state, the south needed slavery if it didn't have slaves not many people would work the fields if they had a chose. The labor was hot and backbreaking and long. So good luck finding workers who are willing to work such hours for low pay. Plus you would actually have to pay the worker an actually wage meaning an increase in price, higher the price lower the demand. The south can afford that.

As an FYI, in colonial Virginia it was illegal in almost every situation to free your slaves. Jefferson himself attempted to change this, and was always against slavery. The few slaves that he could free would have meant destroying families. He died in deep debt because of his stance on this issue.

It’s also worth noting that most of Lincoln’s less abolitionist statements where made when A) it was feared the south may succeed, or B) during the early years of the war. After the war’s turning point he seemed more moderately abolitionist. But whether this was him expressing his actual opinions or attempting to garner the abolitionist vote for a planned third term we may never know.

Lincoln was right when he said he needed to invade the CSA to maitain the Union but for economic reasons not philosophical ones. The main revenue for the Union government at the time was tariffs and the southern successions threatened this in several ways: 1. The southern states, which needed to import finished goods, would not be paying tariffs to the Union government anymore. 2. European finished goods were cheaper than goods from the North when not locked behind protectionist tariffs. The southern states would then buy goods from Europe causing a decline in northern industry. 3. The lower tariffs of the CSA meant that goods destined for the North would likely be sold to into the CSA and smuggled into the Union to avoid tariffs.
