Temples are important tools for rug weavers. They keep a rug’s width consistent and very close to the width of the warp in the reed as you weave and help you achieve the very firm beat a rug needs. In this video clip from his Boundweave video course, Tom Knisely talks about the benefits of using a rug temple and shows how to install one. Follow his advice, and you’ll be weaving rugs with perfect edges for years to come!

A hint you may need: tie a thread or place a tape to indicate the hole where to place the other bar in. And when not in action, don't forget to use safety covers to keep the teeth in good condition. Also release and remove the temple always when you release warp and rewind the cloth beam. The temple can cause some serious damage to the breast beam otherwise.

How often do you move the temple? After weaving one inch, two inches? Thank you!

Later in his course, Tom showed moving the temple at the point when he could start to see the edges drawing in. About an inch or two is a solid place to start, though it could be more or less often, depending on your project. Happy weaving!
