Why Animating Steel Ball Run Might Be Problematic

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run is one of the longest running JoJo parts, and it doesn't come free of problems when David Production is going to create the anime adaptation. The main problem is Horses and the overall cost of animating them. I'll talk more about it in the video!

Since the first dozen episodes of Stone Ocean dropped, I'd like to throw in a quick word. Over the past couple of arcs, David Production has experimented with how CGI is implemented in the show. In Stone Ocean, I noticed that the CGI team went the extra mile to model the ENTIRE prison complex to create consistent shots. This is more obvious and notable in the fight against Lang Wrangler. Not to mention that the entire OP has some well crafted orbital shots in CGI. David Production, and the team at IKIF+, have demonstrated that they can use CGI in an effective way. When you look at the history of works where IKIF+ have done the CGI animation, it's apparent they have spent well over TWO DECADES to build their talent. IKIF+ even did CGI in the late 90s! So with the Netflix money, IKIF+'s CGI experience, and David Production's consistent quality output. Steel Ball Run will no doubt get the proper adaptation it deserves.

There is no "Netflix money " . Netflix literally pays less to japanese anime than everybody else. Just this 2021 there has been controversy about Netflix and how they pay so extremely poorly to the anime producers in Japan for their Netflix anime. They pay 3 times less than the average in Japan .

As someone who's studied animation, one potential thing they could do is do zoom-ins for more dialogue-focused scenes, but have a 3D animated render of a horse on standby, with a variety of angles and speeds, and use it as a clear reference (or if needed straight up trace, yeah we all do it, animation is hard). DP has done horses before for part 2, and they mostly did CG for the running with closeups on only the bits that needed focusing on like the battles or the chariots themselves, so I feel confident they'd be able to cut corners appropriately. (Or hire James Backster to oversee the horse animation)

I feel like us as a community don't thank them often enough, I can't think of a moment where they have failed us in a major way. they follow the manga very closely and they even change to the artstyle to fit arakis style, they make such good music and the overall design of the show has always felt so nice

Joseph vs Wamuu. David Pro animated multiple horses just fine during that fight without skipping a beat. They were CG but looked fine. It does make sense that horses have complex anatomy but I just don't believe animating or CGing a horse is any harder than the crazy shit we see in anime like giant robots transforming, monsters, or whatever the hell goes on in Mob Psycho. Although I do think the SBR anime could be a problematic production I don't horses are the reason.

Yeah you're right but those were just one or two episodes, now it's an entire part, but if they keep that quality on the horses i think most people would be happy. I have faith that they will make the best of out it, maybe Netflix will be their sugar daddy if they run low on funds. I also want to clarify that the Lead animator of Golden Wind Kohei Ashiya said the following in an interview: "Kohei said that SBR would be really expensive to make since most of the action is horse racing and that is really hard to animate. I think DP can do Araki's later style just fine, they mostly nailed it in the Rohan OVAs. As for the horses I was thinking they'd assemble a small team of dedicated horse animators to animate every horse, and then the main team'd animate the characters on top of that.

Funnest Of Facts: The art director/person whose art (down to a specific character design she did I believe in college that the creator, a long term friend of hers, was captivated by and kept badgering her to let him do something with it) inspired the entire concept for the show is like, the FINAL BOSS of horse girls, it's great. I like your point about how zooming in the panels or cutting shots differently could affect the pacing and people’s views of the show. I mainly look to One Punch S2, a lot of shots would cut last second to cut down costs of animating the impact of the shot, or zoomed in to avoid all the detail, but with DP having done parts 1-6, I have faith they’d do this correctly

I honestly think that 3D animation has reached a point where it can actually be done extremely well, in particular using shading techniques to really make the 3D and 2D elements blend together surprisingly well. That said, they are *horses,* and they don’t necessarily have to look the same as the humans (and frankly, they don’t in the manga either). I think a good balance would be to use 3D animation in scenes with, say, 3 or more horses in motion, but hand-animating (or even rotoscoping) the horses when it’s only 1 or 2. It’s ultimately up to the storyboarders to find ways of working around these scenes though, as they will be responsible for what is actually planned to be shown on screen. But they’re also probably already looking into their horse-animation options as we speak. I’m not particularly worried, we know that Jojo translates particularly well to 3D as well as 2D anyway, and that David has the chops to make it work.

I think they'll mix CGI and classic 2d animation depending on their needs, i.e 2d in scenes where there's few horses like during Gyro's and Johnny's interactions while primarily using CGI where there's a lot of them, all while mixing shot angles cause it would become noticeable if they kept animating horses from above the half point like you said.

You know what they could do to not have to animate the horse's legs? They could put like a foggy cloud-like effect around their legs or for that wide shot, show it really quick to where they can get away with dust clouds from the ground blocking view of their legs. Also, I'm completely fine if they try to cut corners with animating horses due to how expensive it is. I don't want zero horse animation, but I'd rather get a part 7 anime and not see fully animated horses than getting nothing

It has like 0.9 million manga sales per volume compare that to hxh (which has been on hiatus since forever )and has like 2.2 million sales per volume and hxh itself fades in popularity compared to series like one-piece ,Naruto ,DBZ ,demon slayer jjk and aot which have sales between 3-6 million per volume. Even seinen series like berserk and vagabond have 1.25 and 2.2 million sales per volume respectively. In manga with more than 100 million copies sold ,out of 18 manga only jojo has a per volume sales less than a million. It has rarely been in top 10 manga sales yearly even when it was on shounen jump.

You also forgot that steel ball run is one of the most popular seasons and one of the best written seasons in all anime. New JoJo fans don’t have to watch the first season of JoJo and steel ball run might even be set in a whole new series if it’s gonna be a Netflix only anime. If steel ball run is handled similarly to that of golden wind, it’ll surely explode. Hopefully we’ll still get JoJo Fridays.

for what it's worth, stone ocean's CGI has looked great so far and blends very well with DPs art style. That said, the amount of CGI used is minimal and doesn't compare to what 70 horses on screen would look like. Either way, I'm looking forward to their adaptation. This video convinced me to rea SBR after watching Stone Ocean because of how good some of those panels look. As a big Berserk fan, I'm impressed.

SBR may just take a long time to animate. While it is hard to animate horses along with everything else about about Jojos. The most immediate answer I can think of is just to give the studio and the animators enough time to effectively animate. you can reference it from AOT Erwin vs Beast titan scene, which they use cgi on huge amount of horses, but using 2d in close up shots. they might use assets for the horse running cycle so they don't have to draw it every time, as well as switching angle for easier animating purposes.

Steel Ball Run is also set in a different universe than parts 1-6 and it is a seinen instead of a shonen. I am 100% sure SBR won't be animated. Western fans overestimate how popular JoJo is because they just found out about it relatively recently and because of the memes and again, western fandom hype, they forget that the main audience is in Japan. JoJo isn't that popular in Japan. Each new part sells worse than the last one. Vento Aureo sold like 50k DVDs (in anime the sales of DVDs are super important) and its one of the most beloved parts. Stone Ocean is the most hated and we will have to see how it does. If you look at how Jojolion is doing (anime is also important as it's seen as a way to promote the manga) is doing okay. It's definitely the best selling manga of Ultra Jump, but it's not a best seller on itself. It barely makes it to the top 50 most sold per volume in some years. And Jojolion is more popular than SBR ever was, again, in Japan. JoJo is very much a passion project, it isn't made to bring it the big bucks, but DP can't just continue to make it even if they don't get paid. The licence is Shueshia's and WB Japan (and Lucky Land but that's basically Araki). They are the ones that will ultimate decide if it's even worth it to animated the longest parts that are not also more complicated to animate (not just the horses, on itself Arakis more realistic style used in most of SBR and start of JJL will be more difficult to animate) , but most importantly, they are more mature. I would rather not see SBR animated if they are going to cut corners to being it to life. It's a great manga as it is. People really don't value manga/comics enough and act like animation is inherently better, but imo that's not always the case.

What if they make 3d animated horses and then just rhotoscope them? They can get away with a lot of base animations and since we're talking about anime, they won't have to put much budget into rendering since they don't need that many frames. Not only that, but then they won't have to worry about angles and proportions until the shading step comes in. It may not mitigate the whole price increase, but it will definitely be cheaper than manually animating each horse scene.

Cgi horses could look fine if they executed it like the 3d animation from the part 3 openings. I imagine it might be a case where only certain scenes use 2d animated horses, while the majority of scenes have cgi horses. The art style is something I've been wondering about too, since Steel Ball Run and Jojolion both look so different than any previous part stylistically, it could be a challenge. I have faith in dp to do it right though, especially now that the anime is as popular as ever rn.

Dude, believe me, horses might be hard but ironically, they aren't that present in the story even tho is a horse race. David Pro will do something to save money and time. The thing about animation is that you don't have to animate everything necessarily frame by frame, you just have to give the illusion of movement, they have a lot of ways to animate SBR without spending so much time on the horses, like shots from affar, static images with effects, CGI horses, etc.
