Come to my high school. I'd say that more than 90% of the kids attending it have seen (and enjoy) anime. I've yet to meet a person here that won't at least recognize the name of an anime. My teachers even have seen anime (my lit teacher's screen saver is Full Metal Alchemist). We have anime club that shows (mostly the subbed versions), but some of the anime they play there are some of the worst and bloodiest, yet we still have the club. And there's freshman here who have seen some of the worst anime. 14 and 15 year olds. And they seem perfectly fine to me. My school is basically centered around anime. It comes up in conversations every day, whether that be with a teacher or your friends. Half the school are fan artists (and many if them are damn skillful). Anime is very popular at my school. Located in America. It's the most popular thing at my school.

I'm surprise anime is as popular as it is in the US without much marketing. has anyone ever seen a highway billboard for an anime show or movie. Seen any TV ads for non pokemon anime movie? most anime fans find news and new shows/movies online on sites dedicated to anime. it's hard to find news about anime on sites dedicated to movies

+rurutu M here in Maine highway billboards are illegal as a distraction to drivers. otherwise anime doesn't usually have the kind of budget or understanding of the american marketplace to see relevant advertisement. i was surprised to see Pokemon games getting advertised on tv.

Anime needs to be on television for it to become more popular in the US, it's that simple, I would love to see a company like crunchyroll create a channel that is dedicated to just anime.

"The rest of the world" you mean the Western hemisphere. Most of Asia treat anime as regular imported shows. There are no special blocks for them. There are special channels but free to air networks air anime as regular shows that fits with age range along side western animations and locally produced animation. Just as in Japan, most anime are treated as just another show in places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, other southern Asia country, and even starting recently in Mainland China. This isn't just with anime. Regular live action shows that are imported are aired along side locally produced shows. Movies aren't even dubbed for theater if they are aimed at an older audience. Take for example the Dr. Slump anime by the same author as Dragon Ball and how it was treated in Hong Kong. They aired it on TV in the late 80s early 90s. They didn't give it any special treatment. It was just another imported show. Nothing special is about it. Because it was funny, it was popular. But the show was funny enough to leave an impact in the local culture. Even today, years after the original airing, it is still popular. Everyone young and old knows what it is. You can get their merch everywhere. You can find the pink poop in the show in most independently owned toy store. The show is popular enough that there are still newly produced bootleg merch being sold. Another anime with mainstream popularity is Fullmetal Alchemist. They aired the original show right after a locally produced drama. An anime that is mainstream in not just Hong Kong, but most of Asia is Doraemon. They treat it like any other kids show in after school time slot since the late 80s. Because it is a kids shows, kids watch it and kids like it. It is still on the air in most Asian country and they don't do any editing beside a dub. It popularized Japanese style red bean paste buns in many countries. Giving special treatment and time slot just for anime will surely increase viewership but it won't make it more mainstream. It will just give more reason for people who don't like anime, don't want to like anime, or who don't want other people to like anime to single out the time slot to avoid. Mix the airing time of anime with other mainstream show will gain more acceptance because you group it with things people already like. Have My Little Pony aired right before some magical girl anime. Some action anime along with Legend of Korra or Ninja Turtle. Heck, they treated the Transformer anime series just like other Transformer series, it can work. Air some slice of life comedy anime next to Seinfeld syndication. Gundam after Star Trek repeats. Terror in Resonance after 24. The way to gain mainstream acceptance is to treat it like other mainstream media with no special treatment. It is a win win if anime gets syndicated on network TV. It will increase local station viewership from anime fans and younger audience but also boost popularity of non-anime shows to these new audiences. BUT there is a bigger problem for anime to gain mainstream acceptance. The major problem with America in relation to entertainment is that people don't like to watch non-American stuff. Sure you have the few hits that are popular but not too mainstream, but in general most adults don't like non-American made entertainment. People working in networks have bias against non-American shows and that includes anime targeted to kids. Executives would want to erase any thing that may seem foreign even though it cost more. If companies only care about money, they would just dub over kids appropriate shows animated or live action and air them. There would be no American version of power ranger if money was the issue since it is way cheaper to dub over the Super Sentai shows. It is hard for anything foreign to gain popularity in the States because most adult avoid foreign stuff and adult will keep their kids away from foreign stuff. Companies don't care about fan base because they can only see through their old bias eyes. They use money as a justification but it isn't. This is the same reason why Hollywood have to remake foreign movies like the Dragon Tattoo series and Let the Right One In or shows like Ugly Betty. Same reason why Hollywood keep whitewashing characters in their adaptations whether the source material is American or not. Executives automatically see anything that isn't American and/or white as unprofitable. That's why British media is easier to gain popularity and mainstream acceptance because of the English language and mostly white stars. It is a self sustaining cycle. Executives don't like foreign stuff so they don't show foreign stuff. Audience can't see foreign stuff, so they are unable to like foreign stuff. Audience unable to like foreign stuff, executives don't like foreign stuff. It was very difficult to get the Book of Life made because it centered around Mexican culture even though it is made in America starring American actors. It is an animated movie aimed at kids. Kids don't care as long as it is fun, but the executive kept saying Mexican culture wouldn't sell but by some miracles, the movie was made. Unless this mindset is changed in American entertainment culture and how people view anything foreign, anime won't get accepted by the mainstream.

Anime isn't really that popular here because of cartoons. Cartoon Network (back in it's glory days) was really good enough for us. Toonami gave us a taste of what was amazing overseas and that was also good too. I'm sure Japan didn't grow up with Mickey and Bugs like we did so it's not that mainstream here and for that I am glad. Corporate would completely ruin the anime industry if they got their paws on it. I'd rather let Japan focus on making them.

I think it also has to do with how in order to get into a long running series like naruto you have to start at episode one, unlike cartoons like family guy or adventure time which feel very episodic it's not hard for someone to get the gist of the series from one random episode. However if there were to market anime like death note or fmab just like seasonal tv shows I'm sure people will love it.

about airing toonami during the day, that could be a problem. Since most anime is aimed at teens and adults, the FCC or whoever is supposed to look at shows before they air, would have to cut things out or do even more dialogue changes (like how 4kids handled yugioh, one piece, and how the beyblade franchise is still being handled today. Even during the funimation dub of the original Dragon Ball Z the dialogue was a little too child friendly, sure most of the violence and gore weren't censored, but the edits to the dialogue made it to childish so to speak.) if anything, it would be better to move it closer to like 7-8 at night when adult swim starts

It's because the US is too hooked on weird shows on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network that I feel are just much much worse than actual anime. The channels such as Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network (CN) just show horrible cartoons that are catered to 5 year olds. Well some of it really sucks (No offense) 1. Spongebob: Ya. It's a yellow sponge, a talking pink starfish, a squid that's not a squid, a lobster, and a giant plankton. Horrible. I don't know the others since I haven't watched those channels for a long time but they really put no thought into any of the shows or any work into it.

Anime in Japan i to them as The Walking Dead, Game of throwns, Arrow, Flash, and other live action movies (such as the Advengers) is to the West. It is unfair to compair anime to something like Spongebob when cartoons are not even a proper comparison to anime in most cases ( and of the only thing they have in common is that they are animated ). That's like comparing Game of Thrones to a shitty Japanese game show and then saying Japanese shows are shit because of it.

I think the obvious reason is the airing blacks they give it. Adult Swim anime is only on when tweakers are awake and kids anime is on in the morning when the kids are being driven to school. No one fucking watches it. They need to fix anime airing have the shonen and kids shows in the afternoon when they are not in school, they need the more action based pg13 shows in the evening and the seinen type mature shows around 11 when people that work are home. That kinda how it was when I was younger.

Homura Akemi We could take a moment to think that maybe people who act childish when the topic of "dubs" come up like you are right now is another reason that anime isnt popular out here in the US. No one wants to associate with people who act childish over trivial things.
@まき-c4s10 жыл бұрын
I think one of the reasons for it to not be popular, is because a big percent of the people in the US is not open to other cultures. I wouldn't call anime much of a cultural thing, but the language used in it is, and the footage, considering most anime takes place in Japan. It can either be that American people don't want to stick time into it, or don't like the idea of 'watching Chinese child shows' as most of them refer to. But I know from experience, but most people who are into gaming, you can get them to watch anime shows, and most of them will stick to it. I think the main reason for anime not being popular in the US is because they never get in touch with it. Nearly nobody tells them "Heay I saw this awesome anime! You should try it!". But I don't live in the US and I'm no professional of any kind, so just forget all I typed :)

i think it was 4kids that did all the censoring, otherwise dubbing companies are not allowed to change ANYTHING about the drawing or animation of the show or they will get their license for the show revoked

Well, idk, for me it seems that there's too many anime these days with too many typical or similar shows/manga (aka just comics for people whom don't know), there's the generic group of friends (all in their teens), generic characteristics, the happy go lucky protagonist one, the serious one whom has a secret crush on another character, the serious emo like character whom went through a "traumatic" experience, there's the lack of facial expression character (could as well be the traumatized emo character), and there's as well the constantly happy /positive character, and then there's the quote on quote "best" friend of the protagonist/comedy relief character, and there's the comedy relief character (though this one is common throughout entertainment). Along with this are the group of teens who are best friends, and they save the day by "the power of friendship!" (after so many filler in anime or pointless plots (pretty sure even manga has done this too)). There's as well the unexplainable victory over a villain, usually friendship power or idk some times there's no explanation, and yes ik I've already mentioned this one bitabout "friendship", but it's too common of which it even is the key to winning. Then there's the continues lack of originality, this one is about life, this one is about life and virtual reality, this one is about life and fantasy, this one is about..... who knows, this one is about a group of friends who face hard ships, this one is about a group of friends who face hard ships and fight demons, this one is a group of friends who face hard ships and fight monsters, this one is about a guy who saw his family murdured and now just mops over his dead family, this one is about a guy who saw his family murdered and mops over them while saving the world when he's not to busy spending time with friends (while still moping). So there's my list of what is possibly some of the reasons why people in America don't like other not interested in Japanese anime and manga.

Once upon a time there wasn't anything on so I went to the magical land of Internet and discovered fanfic. Through fanfic I found out about a wonderful media called "Naruto" and that my friends is where anime for me exploded. So I lived happily ever after with no regrets:)

Bandai of Japan gave up because they wanted to charge out the ass for blu-rays and dvds but not ship it to America. They won't even air it on Toonami here. People say because "It's not popular/marketable." Bullshit.

one piece didnt fail because of the dub, most ppl didnt even bother listening to an episode because the art style looks childish. i think DBZ had a much bigger impact on north america than any of the big 3.
@samalexisallie10 жыл бұрын
The style doesn't look childish at all.

samalexisallie dude, the main character looks like an inflated matchstick men with a straw hat and the villans look like doodles from an elementary class.

whoa wait a second, just the title of this video confused me. when it comes to anime in general, I'm an old timer. I got into anime in the mid 90's, when the medium itself had only a small cult following in the west. things are so different now. the last thing I would have expected was that anime would actually become as popular as it is now. I mean going by every indication I've seen, anime has become a huge force in the US. every bookstore I go to has a manga section now, and I find anime related merchandise everywhere I go. moreover a lot of people agree that the popularity of anime in the US, has started to effect the medium in Japan. at least that's why people say there are so many fan-service titles these days. plus there are a number of titles that owe their success to American viewers. shows like Cowboy Bebop, and Trigun, weren't considered classics until they came to the US. I mean I could be wrong, but based on what I've seen the industry has amassed a huge following here in North America. at the moment comic book movies are very much the big fad in Hollywood right now. producers in the industry are always looking similar properties, that could offer the same potential. and I've been hearing more talk about possible anime adaptations as live action Hollywood films. I have a theory that anime could be the next big thing that Hollywood moves to, especially with its built in and ever growing fan base.

+drhploveboat nerd culture in general is more popular in the U.S. now. the anime industry doesn't actually care about the international market outside of a few studios such as studio bones.
@drhploveboat9 жыл бұрын
catalysts94 to be honest I lost interest with the anime industry in its current form a few years back. it was around that time that I discovered live action samurai cinema and television, especially from the peek of the Japanese film industry in the 60's and 70's. maybe it was because I was getting older, maybe because the anime industry was declining in quality, but these days I'm far more interested in the live action samurai genre than anime.

drhploveboat i'm still finding interest in a few seinen series, but otherwise i really don't care for the current trend in anime myself.

Would be nice if anime was popular. Honestly I was ignorant towards anime about 3 years ago. I thought one weird people watched it. Now I feel terrible for my comments and love and support it.
@thesoul77711 жыл бұрын
Yeah but with the popularity comes a lot of idiotic followers. I just don't want brainless and arrogant football players to be talking about anime. I don't know about anyone else, but i'm kinda liking the way anime is now. For the most part, it really only consists of people that actually appreciate the artwork, stories, and characters. True fans. But if everyone knew about it, for me at least, the magic of being able to have your "own special hobby" would be devalued. Idk that's just what I think. Also, I don't consider myself as an "anime elitist" I just feel indifferent after watching anime for so long.

Its not related to America but In England they actually did have an anime channel called anime central which did anime from 9 am to 6pm after about a year the channel went bust and well that was it pretty much I think anime is more popular in the US but from that example I don't think it could work in England at least because its not popular enough to support a channel.

In Portugal they used to broadcast some anime subbed (Portuguese Dubbing for both anime and western animation came later) like Captain Tsubasa, an anime about baseball and Saint Seiya. Saint Seiya wasn´t fully broadcasted because parents complained about te violence, but the show was later broadcasted later in another channell, dubbed and almost completed (Laked the episode where Aioria confronts Seiya when he was facing Shaina, Shaina confessed her love and Seiya dressed the Sagitarius cloth for the first time), mostly because of the big impact caused by DBZ aroud here (The Janemba and Hildegarn movie were broadcasted as one (One movie each part) on cinema (DBZ was really big in Portugal at the 90´s), but what reflects DBZ popularity is the proto-parody dub. Can you imagine Cell always saying BADAH! everytime he speaks? And Vegeta singing the Portuguese equivalent of "Mini Myni Moe!" while beating the crap of somebody? lol Still, after DBZ, the MAnga entertainment VHS and maybe, the late Locomotion channell was what introduced some Portuguese to anime (Eventhought Some anime dubs around here are parodies. The Portuguese anime fans like to make videos called dub parodies showing the comical aspects. If some Portuguese says "Silence cause I´m gonna sing the FAdo!" is a reference to the Portuguese Dub Goku xD

The first popular anime in the U.S was actually Robotech. It's kinda the catalyst for everything anime related that has happened outside of Japan.
