Why Apple Removed The Family Emoji

In their latest iOS 17.4 update, Apple removed the family emoji that’ve been around for over a decade. Replacing them with these simplistic icons that many find unappealing. So why did Apple do this?
Well, it was the result of a process that began in 2015. When the unicode consortium, an organization responsible for creating industry standards for emoji, decided to make the characters more inclusive. Instead of only being yellow, they recommended emoji also include five skin tone options.

Honestly, Microsoft had it best. When you click on the emoji, have a "+" symbol pop up, and then customise your own family. The only reason the emoji didn't work was because it wasn't standardised, but that can easily be re-evaluated.

As a black man this feels an example of the severity of a problem not justifying the required complexity of a solution. I mean, there's a saying that goes "you cant please everyone". Even if Apple somehow manage to create an elegant solution to creating 52,000 family skin tone combination Emojis, that still wouldn't include everyone because there are more than 5 skin tones, and there are a variety of hair colors amd hair styles too. Some people have uneven skin tones, moles, scars, and dermatological conditions like albinism and vertiligo. And some families have 3 or 4 kids. We're never going to get to the point where everyone family in the world will be included in a family emoji. And even if it were possible, how important is it that teensie tiny caricatures which are in no way vital to communication through text look like exactly like you? Is it important enough to to drop thousands of dollars and man hours on the brightest minds to develop a system that can create millions of emojis then assigning a universal code to each one so that all devices can show them when they could be doing, i don't know, literally anything else actually useful? Im more concerned about unequal treatment in the workplace than representation in Emojis. Maybe lets focus our inclusivity demands somewhere more impactful...

Although I feel like diversity in workplaces a lot of times is dumb. For example, as an engineer, programmer, or even at universities. I'm gonna be totally honest here, I have never ever used the Family Emoji, and I'm sure many other people as well. The families take up too much space in the emoji selector so I'm actually kind of happy for this change.

People complaining about the need for skin tones... but actually Unicode has had a technical way to solve the problem of including people with different genders/skin tones/etc without blowing up symbol tables for ages. It's called combining symbols. They could have specified that sequences of single family member emojis should be combined into family pictograms on supporting clients. And on non-supporting clients it could still look legible. But instead they (or at least the platforms) opted for removing even the most basic inclusivity they had 🤦🏽‍♀️

It would have been awesome if the Unicode Consortium had laid down standards to do it as Microsoft had done it. I personally find the less simplistic version of the family emoji easier to understand than the new minimalist ones, and allowing for custom family emoji solves this problem handily. In fact, a whole upgrade to emoji standards to allow for customization would be nice! I could use emoji with my hair color and skin tone, and possibly different hairstyles! Who knows?

Man people expect skin colors in everything, its in almost everything, i support multiple skin tones options but on the families case it just was excessive and not practical, in this case the yellow (which no real person has, asian people are not yellow mind you) worked best for incluvity and practicality. Man Im sad to know they'll take them away (im an android user) I loved how cute the families were and liked all the different combinations were and how they were still inclusive. And even then if you want racialized families including biracial, you can put each personalized skin color family member separately but together in the same text. There's always ways to do stuff without over complicating it.
