I think you made a really good point on the size of cars. I've had two family members in the last 5 years die in car accidents that 15-20 years ago they would have survived, simply because the other driver was driving a massive truck while they were driving regular cars. It feels like people in bigger vehicles care less about the rules and etiquette of the road than smaller vehicles as well. Like they can get away with driving like an ass hole because they are protected in their massive vehicle.

2! In different accidents wtf!! Rip to your fam 🙏 Idiot drivers are the reason I'm against riding or driving motorcycles. My bro got in accident a few years ago some asshat ran a red and t-boned him on the passenger side which totaled his car. Thankfully he was lucky the driver seat was the only kinda intact part of his car and he got out of it with just scratches. If any other person had been in his car with him that day they would have died.

@@agr0nianTV My father's accident was no one really at fault. It was bad weather and it was an accident. But the fact that he was in a car and the other person was in a big truck made the damage completely one sided. The truck driver drove home, and my dads car was totaled. He died on the way to the hospital mid flight. My brother was in the car with my dad and had minor injuries. It was really just an unfortunate accident. My cousin died because the other driver was a new inexperienced driver driving a huge vehicle. What used to be accidents people could survive have turned into who's car is bigger gets to live. My cousin was pregnant with two children. Now those kids don't have a mother, I see them walking to school every day and it breaks my heart.

Buy a big rugged (totally not luxury) SUV to not die in a crash. 1. Do you intend to crash? 2. What about the other guy in the smaller car, is murder just okay now? 3. What about two giant SUVs crashing, is that somehow a safe interaction?

SUVs account for almost 50% of new vehicle purchases, you want to flip a coin and hope you also crash with a smaller car? 1. Then dont wear your seatbelt either, this is a braindead take. 2. There is an over 50% chance that he wouldnt be, and if he was, i would rather be the one that lived, saying it's murder is a wild take 3. Nobody said that is a safe interaction but to bring point number 2 in, would you rather be the guy that gets "murdered" in the smaller car? None of these points really have any merit, and this is coming from someone who owns cars because i prefer them and just inherently take the chance because its my preference

The heavy trucks is such a wild US phenomenon not only for safety, but also for roads wearing out and needing tax payers to pay for work done constantly. There's this thing called the "fourth power law" that states that the stress on the road caused by a motor vehicle increases in proportion to the fourth power of its axle load.

look, i might be a broke college grad with $50k in student loan debt, but man is it nice to actually own your own car fully. bought a subaru legacy for about $5k last year. no loan bs, and I actually got a good deal out of it.. i can tell you right now I am NEVER buying a car new after how much of a breeze my experience has been with my first car. hell, who knows? I might not even get rid of my car until it sh*ts the bed since it's only got 140k miles and it's over 14 years old. should have loads of life left in it, probably take me through the next 6 years at least, hopefully more like 11 but well see. the hassle and financial stress of pulling out loans is not worth looking like an absolute tool lol. yes, i'm aware of the innate danger of driving a sedan in America, but it's not something i constantly think about. if i could have it my way, i wouldn't drive at all and would just walk or bike to work. but it's America after all. i would definitely consider getting a different used car once i've got more money if i start having problems with my current car, maybe a smaller SUV but nothing too big just to be safer.

It sort of compounds our income inequality. You have people getting into loans to pay $60k on a $30k and then they can't afford a lot of other shit because it's tied up in their car. I don't like big cars but I got rear ended by an SUV when I was driving an old Honda Civic, which was a small sedan, and it was scary as hell. The trunk of my car got pushed into the backseat. If there had been anyone back there, they would have been squished. And the SUV wasn't even going fast. I was stopped at a red light and the SUV driver, an elderly man, lost consciousness and hit me at like 30 miles an hour. So I can't justify getting a small car for safety reasons.

What’s even wilder is that despite our reputation for being easy to sue, because of insurance companies and judicial policy it’s pretty hard to sue the pants off someone like the guy who hit you. Either your insurance company has a deal with that guy’s insurance company that fucks you over while minimizing costs for both of them, your insurance company sues the pants off that guy and takes a big cut, sues the guy gets a moderate amount and takes a moderate cut, or you sue on your own and the judicial system likely pushes you into arbitration which significantly caps what you can get, or do the full process and it takes 3 plus years. It’s well known that the net costs, before litigation, of a crash to someone is moderately more than average insurance and tort payouts. At this point, insurance is mostly protecting bad drivers from being bankrupted than anything. If like, a fraction of auto insurance revenue went into the judicial system, insurance companies would probably become somewhat useless, but instead the gubmit it bad and Progressive is our daddy.

This isn't a uniquely American problem. A VW Golf starts at 29k euros in Germany (slightly over 30k USD) for the absolute base model. And that's the car brand called "The People's Car". And it's a regular medium sized car, not a truck or a SUV. Even Corollas start above 20k. The price points are completely outlandish.

The difference is that american car maker CEOs will all be on their knees in front of Trump while he unzips his tax cuts and spreads his tariffs, keeping them alive and well. Not to mention a breakdown enroute would have me on the road again faster than the '78 since shops and dealers aren't exactly keeping those parts in stock on the regular. While I respect your opinion, there's probably a reason hotshot and non-cdl truckers are using new rigs instead of 40 year old trucks.. idk who's buying a brand new rig though that depreciated 10% the moment it leaves the lot. However, even though that made money, it also costs a significant amount in R&D, marketing, logistics, materials, and labor. Now, GM is relying on the top % of Americans to buy more expensive cars, as you're getting the same revenue, but much lower costs. Investors loves this, but it's a risky play as their customer pool gets smaller and smaller.

I’m an enthusiast and from my understanding manufacturers scoot EPA regs by making their cars suvs instead of our ordinary sedans. Also i don’t think the safety factor is as big as a decision factor for consumers stepping up to suvs. I think the real reason is Americans want their cars to do more as they cost more, also many people (like you atrioc with your fit) over estimate what type of car that they need and usually step up to a new suv or crossover/ a new car. Also I believe personally that if some environmental regulations were relaxed manufactures would have more incentive to build more simple engine designs instead of advanced engines that cost more to the consumer. Turbo engine hybrid cars require so much new components than that of a “simple” NA engine through RnD costs. Im not trying to advocate stopping of tech advancement in the auto industry but there are so many decisions that manufacturers do today that are so counterproductive or wasteful. I could rant forever about this. Glizzy Glizzy Glizzy

About the big vehicle thing. I do agree, we should have freedom to do mostly whatever we want if it harms nobody, but.. at the same time I think these large vehicles need to be restricted. They are more dangerous in wrecks and they use so much gas. They should very expensive via taxation, require special licensing, or have proof you need it for work. Some people need larger vehicles, but most don't. It is just wasting our resources that we may not have a replacement for. ICE vehicles are cool, but they kinda need gas to work and these people driving large vehicles are just wasting it to look cool or something. Bring back smaller pickup trucks, most people don't need a F350.

Hey Little A, I work at a small hedging company. From all of my research Auto loan delinquency rates are at an extreme high. I think its 4% higher than credit/housing/personal any other types of loans. Do you still think it’s preliminary for a long short position? With the Fed planning to cut interest rates in 25 it could add a few more years. It’s definitely too early to profit of CDS. Also we aren’t affected by rule 189 its a regulation free market. Always weird betting against the US economy. Curious on your thoughts.

So... have you ever gone to some ABC's car manufacturer's website, configured say a basic SUV for $35k, then the dealer wants $38k for that car? It's not just the car manufacturers. And consumers don't help. Years ago I was negotiating for a car in a dealer's showroom. Ten feet away there was another car. A young person walks in, a sales person approaches. The customer looks at the sticker price, "Is this the price of this car?" Sales person says, "yes." Customer: "I'll take it." Age old issue: Customers hate to negotiate. Personally, I love it.
@Xeonaa
@Xeonaa Ай бұрын
For the vast majority of goods and services we buy in the US, "negotiation" is not a thing. I don't go to the grocery store and negotiate with the manager for cheaper oranges. I don't negotiate my meal's price when I eat at a restaurant. I don't negotiate with the barber who cut my hair. However, when buying a car, the expectation is that sticker price is a rip off and you have to "win" a fair price through a of battle of attrition with the dealership. I am not sure why the system has been built this way, but it sucks.

@@Xeonaa Mostly "big ticket" stuff: Cars, boats, real estate. But not so Carmax. No negotiation there. Otherwise, again, you have to watch the sales closely.

85% of the cars on the road I see are cars released in the exact same year. It’s stupid how many people don’t know how to manage money. I desperately want to believe people have a Verizon or T-Mobile plan for their cars but I know such a thing doesn’t exist because cars actually costs close to sticker price to produce unlike phones.

Honda's and Toyota's are the ONLY new cars anybody should be buying. Yes they still depreciate, but they do so much slower than anything else. Put about 10% down and don't go longer than 60 months on your loan and you'll always have positive equity with those cars

I take issue with the "Rise of the SUV" aspect of that video. If the prices between an SUV which has more space which is important especially for something you'll be driving while you're life changes (kids pets activities etc) and the price of a sedan is comparable to that SUV and there isn't enough of a price difference that would make the most economic sense to pick the sedan over the SUV most people I know would pick the SUV. And I think that is what skewed buying data which is now reflected in manufacturing. It's survivor bias "well people are buying more SUV's so we'll make more of what sells" instead of oh people are buying these because it's comparable in price to a bigger vehicle we should try to lower the cost of smaller cars to make them more appealing to buyers who don't think they want a big vehicle.

I also love how the video glazes over one of the biggest issues of all, corporate greed. Line must go up regardless if it should or could under normal circumstances. The CEO must get their insane bonus that must increase every year without fail. The investors need to get bigger and better payout every year in the form of stock buy backs and all time high stock pricing. These companies can't sell a car for $20k anymore because that means they aren't wringing every dollar they can out of the consumer to line the pockets of the share holders and higher ups.

I bought a 2004 Econoline for $3,000 last year. All I did was check for leaks/rust and plugged in a cheap OBD scanner. Nothing but an evap leak. Fixed it with a $7 gas cap. It's old enough to not be part of the "planned obsolescence" fleet but new enough to be safe and have comfort features. I never want to hear anyone say vehicles are too expensive when you can buy one like this used. Lower your standards. I also never want to hear anyone say used vehicles are a scam/not reliable when all you need is a basic understanding of mechanics and a bit of elbow grease in finding/fixing one.

Im always shocked by how many Americans have very new cars, its not an iPhone, they last decades. And I am even more shocked by how much even middle class or lower Americans are willing to pay for a car. At 8% interest (As shown in the video) 8% interest is insane, you have like 2.5% inflation. I bought it for its low miles, size, and awd because of snow in michigan primarily, tho i have had compliments from the ladies on the interior lol. you get what you pay for sometimes i guess. only 140k miles for 14 years of driving and no major issues so far. it really just blows my mind. like... i had no idea the car market was THIS egregious in pricing. why do people still even bother? dealerships blow as$, they're damn expensive, interest rates are insane.. i could go on. spend some time looking at used cars, meet new people, waste a bit of time, then find a car at a decent price that will do everything you need it to and more at a fraction of the cost and soul-crushing exhaustion that is auto loans

I hope you don't want to take road trips, be comfy in your car, oh yeah make sure you call your friend with a truck to help you move. If you can afford it why not? I keep cars for years, and work on them myself. I'd say the bigger problem is the people who swap cars every couple of years. Leasing has its pros and cons, but buying a car/trading in every 3 years or so? Bro.
