Following the fall of Kabul and with it the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Taliban have been consolidating their power over the country and reaching out to potential friendly nations. One of these is China, the superpower sharing a narrow border with Afghanistan along the Wakhan Corridor and having shared some relations with the Taliban government of the 1990s. Much of the Chinese interest in forging ties with the new rulers of Afghanistan come down to their suppression of Uyghur separatist movements and ensuring the Taliban don't host groups such as ETIM who could then launch attacks into China. In return they would pump money and know-how into Afghanistan, particularly by exploiting the rich mineral resources found in abundance under its mountainous terrain and which for decades have been unreachable due to the presence of the guerrilla Taliban.

Simple. China has an economic card up its sleeve. And that card is the belt and road initiative. It is odd for China and the taliban to be allies due to the fact China is hard-line agaisnt islamism and taliban is not to keen on communism.

China has been very consistent, they are not keen on exporting ideologies like USSR and US is doing right now. Most muslim countries today are much more comfortable dealing with China than US is because US often interfere into their internal affairs and forcing values that are not acceptable to them. You can pull out statistic claiming a lot of countries support US, but that largely doesn't matter because those statistic only represent the ordinary people, not government officials.

China's foreign policy is (officially at least) not meddling in internal affairs, China's inner policy has been in the last decades extremely capitalist (even if officially they maintain the "communist" formality, mostly a relic). China is not "hard line" against islamism: it makes deal with them in many countries such as Sudan, Iran or even Turkey (a NATO member that is also under islamist spell). They just want to control (or at least access) all that matters to them no matter how. The main difference with the USA (other than single party vs twin party) is that their foreign policy is "Bismarckian", while the US foreign policy is "Victorian" instead (or even more aggresive maybe but in any case on the footsteps of the British Empire). By "Bismarckian" I mean the kind of soft gloved imperialism that Germany practiced under Bismark, focused on getting access to open resources rather than forging an empire or even mostly challenging others' empires. That way they managed to overcome Britain c. 1900, making WWI probably unavoidable.

Rare earth minerals, contrary to popular belief and the name, is in fact not rare at all. It's just never really concentrated enough, so much so that to mine it requires turning over a lot of materials and end up with a lot of polluting tailing. If given no other options, "western countries" are perfectly capable of exploiting their own rare earth mineral deposits. They prefer to shit in other people's yards instead.

Sadly, this simply underlines how stupid America's policy has been: it should have made clear that it went into Afghanistan to neutralise Al Quaida, and not to remake Afghanistan in its own image: if it had done that and then got out and simply offered financial and other aid to Afghanistan, it would have benefited both Afghanistan and itself hugely. Now it will have to tread even more carefully with China. Let us hope that America can see that both it and China have an interest in ensuring that Afghanistan does not again become a hotbed for terrorism, and negotiate with China on that basis, rather than simply seeing China as a threat. We can but hope that there are sensible back-door talks of some sort going on between America and China: Anerica has strong leverage since it has Afghanistan's financial reserves: a partnership between China and Anerica to allow Afghanistan to rebuild itself and prosper would be by far the best way of ensuring that terrorist groups are not welcome in Afghanistan. Does the American Government have the imagination and guts to do that?

@@LuisAldamiz for over a century France and Prussia/Germany had a similar idea, until the horror of World War II brought them to see that cooperation was better than war, and they formed the ECSC which essentially became the EU, and have been at peace for 70 years. If there were any doubts they were dispelled in the Suez Crisis a few years later. The EU and also its rival model, the EFTA, were made to organized US vassals in more efficient ways and prevent conflicts among them. Europe was pretty much finished in the 50s and could only operate as vassals (plural) of the leading superpowers: USA and USSR (now USA and China).

He uses the classical case of Britain and Portugal to explain how can a capitalist and imperialist country become subservient of another. But that also means that ultimately only two top dogs can co-exist and they do so in terms of total rivalry. This is of course in capitalist conditions, which are intrinsically competitive. It's possible that it may be different in socialist conditons but China is not anymore socialist and is not at all interested in socialism. Bolshevik model systems ultimately just used socialism (in Fordist global conditions) to promote national growth and proto-capitalist autonomous development, totally not the original idea of socialism/communism but that's what actually happened.

It must be mentioned that the Taliban was partly created by the Pakistani Intelligence Service, the ISI in 1994. While it did have some Mujahideen fighters it wasn't Mujahideen. The American backed Northern Alliance was mostly former Mujahideen as was several of the anti Taliban Insurgencies.
