what sucks about inflation is that they always raise the prices more than it. If Inflation go up by 1%, they raise prices by 3% and keep the 2% profit.
@Me-ui1zy2 сағат бұрын
It can happen. But remember inflation doesnt affect all products equally. Like food inflation over the past 3 years has been substantially higher than topline inflation. So there is some skimping, but its not as simple as that
@MisterPyOne2 сағат бұрын
Yeah, like luxury goods have gone down in price that's why inflation is lower. Which for every normal person doesn't matter at all
@paroxysm6437Сағат бұрын
you're not factoring in how inflation increases costs all around the board. delivery prices are increased (gas more expensive). electricity and basic utilities become more expensive. renting is more expensive etc. that cost is then passed onto the consumer. usually companies maintain a certain profit margin and they adjust accordingly

Plain Bagel looked through the financial statements of US stores and didn't find any evidence of that if you want to look up a video.

It’s true they can’t compete with bigger stores like Walmart but there is a wendover production video explaining how dollar general thrive in places too small for big chain retail stores and often become the only place for groceries for many.

Can confirm. Manager at a family Dollar here. Many of our regulars get their groceries here since big chains too far away to walk
@talmagegardiner63322 сағат бұрын
It’s true, but I think it really speaks to a breaking point of the dollars inflation and how the video talked about it just not holding up to Walmart prices (where I personally feel like I find better value cheap items for the same price as dollar stores) And I think that while it may still hold true to the small towns that Wendover talks about, the 15% of Americans who live in that kind of rural area just aren’t enough to counteract the kind of drop they’ve seen in suburban areas, and more and more of both are more affordable to make trips to Walmart in town.

Honestly, i went into a dollar tree for the first time since they expanded their prices, and the shit is still cheap but its also not nearly as shitty for some things. It used to be that very specific shit was worth getting from the dollar store because the quality difference didnt matter, but so much of their food and tool stuff was absolutely trash. Now its more like 5Below and thats fine by me

Would also tribute to culture shifts from the online boom. I remember 10 years ago NZ Internet was incredibly garbage where Telecom had a monopoly on fibre and charged insane prices on installation until the government blew up the company into Chorus& Spark and forced them to install fibre at a reasonable price as well as subsiding less wealthy neighbourhoods. Good Internet is wildly available now so more kids play online games like Fortnite and Roblox, so they beg their parents to buy them in game currency. Less kids want to go to the dollar store, so parents are less likely to go to support the business.

As an employee of a canadian dollarstore called dollarama for 2 years. Ill say that its weirdly mixed between customers who are former target or walmart shoppers who now r feeling less financially safe and have turned to dollar stores and are pleased with the prices. And ppl who have always been dollarstore shoppers who are pissed that the average item is like 4.75. Also we usually have at least 100k stolen a year. My store looks like itll prob have lost around 200k to theft this year. Its just sad that normal stores are out of reach for parents who have so called good and stable jobs.

When I lived in Canada briefly in 2016-17 the local shoppers drug mart was also a mini supermarket. They installed self service machines that had no weight sensor on the scanned items side, the security of the machine was pretty scuffed. I could scan something, press on it and go into a menu where I can adjust the price without any security codes 😆 I couldve easily done major heist stuff, but I did live like a 2 minute walk away which wouldve been super stupid. I would just cut a little my struggle weeks. They did eventually add more oversight on certain things, so I gave up on being too sleezy. In my defense, I dont care about corporate profits

I was accused of shoplifting candy at a Dollar Store. I was in a dollar store and started eating candy that I had from a different store. I went to the bathroom and when I came out eating the candy the worker thought I stole the candy. She yelled to her employee I was shoplifting, then I started arguing because I didn't shoplift the candy, I just got it from another store, but she didn't believe me. There just happened to be a police officer walking around, they did have police do security in that area sometimes. So like 30 seconds into this argument about my candy, there's already a police officer prepared to arrest me if I can't convince them I bought this candy at another store. Then it hit me, we were in a dollar store. Told them "There's no way they sell this candy for only $1, let's go look at all the candy section and see if you even sell it." We go look at the candy. They indeed did not sell my candy at the dollar store, and the lady who accused me said nothing as she walked away. Told the staff and police I didn't even wanna buy anything from there anymore. So then I left the store, WITH ALL THE OTHER STUFF I SHOPLIFTED AHAHAHAHHAHA, I felt on top of the world after that lol

@tactrix1h3 минут бұрын
You just said "Costco only raises prices by 14%", you realize that 14% is by almost any standard a ridiculously high margin right? And I'll give you an example, a pack of cheese costs around $2.09 here, now typically when I see any price raise on it, it'll be by about $0.10. So it might go to $2.19 on a bad day. In Costco with their 14% it would end up costing $2.38. That's not just a raise, that's a fucking gouge and a half!
